I inherited an aquamarine ring from my mother. The stone, which is unusually tall, is lovely but the setting was old fashioned. I wanted a more modern and ‘beefier’ setting. I used Google to search for jewellers near me who offer bespoke ring settings. That’s how I found Pruden & Smith, who are 20 miles away. I contacted them after scrolling through their website. I was invited to have an introductory discussion and I took with me my ring and an image of a 1968 aquamarine dress ring by Kutchinsky as an example of the sort of thing I wanted. Rebecca Smith conceived a design consisting of twelve slender ‘cairns’ made from convex white gold discs. The result is stunning. I cannot praise Pruden & Smith highly enough. I visited Pruden and Smith to have some of my mother's jewellery reworked into items I could wear today. Everybody is so warm and welcoming and Rebecca immediately understood the sentiment of the pieces and their incredibly personal value to me. She could not have been more careful in listening to my ideas and tentatively offering her own. I now have the next generation of heirlooms to wear and enjoy rather than languishing in their boxes. I have known Pruden and Smith for many years, both in terms of client-craftspeople and on a personal level as colleagues and friends. I have had a number of pieces made over the years -including my own ordination chalice and a recently a wonderful chalice designed by Eric Gill has been beautifully and sympathetically restored by them with the addtion of a contemporary paten ( ritual plate for the eucharistic bread) . I have great admiration for the quality of their work but also their dedication to excellence and the friendly and knowledgable conversations about the design and execution of any works. My partner and I have just had an engagement ring and wedding rings made at Pruden and Smith. I have bought jewellery from P&S for many years and have had great pleasure and enjoyment from everything I have bought. This was my first visit to Pruden and Smith and WOW, the service from Rebecca Smith and the team was outstanding. After initially visiting to see if an emerald I bought in India was in fact an Emerald, Rebecca sent it off to their gemologist for confirmation. Alas it came back as an Agate.I really was impressed with their ring designs so went ahead for mine to be made. The only thing was we had to find the right Emerald. Rebecca scoured a trade fair she was attending and is probably so sick and tired at the number of Emeralds she looked at, but she found the perfect one for the design.Today I collected my ring and am over the moon it is just what I wanted, it is fabulous. Our most recent experience with this unique jewellers in Ditchling was to use their redesigning service.I had a ring that I had never been entirely happy with, and so we saw Rebecca Smith, and together we completely updated the ring. We had some ideas of our own, and Rebecca helped with the logistics of the design. We visited a couple of weeks later for a fitting, and collected the finished ring 2 weeks after that. I am thrilled with the ring. Even more so because I know that it’s a unique piece, designed for me by Rebecca. It’s wonderful to have such superlative craftsmanship right here in Sussex. It’s always such a treat to visit the shop and see their beautiful pieces. The staff are always very welcoming and keen to let customers see downstairs where the jewellery is made.
