About

Hi. My name is Janice. I have been a pet behavioural consultant for over 20 years.

My main concern is the lack of understanding most people have over what makes their dog tick. My aim in life
is to educate people. I can rectify any and all problems-from teaching a puppy housetraining, to aggressive behaviour between dogs or aggression towards people.

Our 12 week old puppy was changing into quite an aggressive madam, snapping at us and then starting to bite when over excited, tired or frustrated. It was hurting us and stopping us playing or walking her.
Janice came to see us within days of initial contact, sat, observed and discussed corrections in our handling of our pup, most made complete sense when told them, they were basic, non fussy, logical instructions. We made the minor changes instantly and almost within a day, our adorable, cute puppy returned, had mellowed become calmer, but mostly had almost stop biting, it's been less than a week and even the snapping has now practically stopped, if our pup now opens her mouth, within one "no", she closes it quickly and is much nicer. Thank you Janice.

Janice R Otter is a miracle worker. We have a 3 year old Jack Russell Terrier who has been from home to home and hasn’t been properly taught much on how to behave.

She came today and told ME what to do, she didn’t do it herself because as we all know, owners needs training more than the dogs!

We were on the verge on wondering whether we would be able to keep the dog and Janice has put everything in order and shown us the amazing dog that he is.

To be honest I’m very emotional because after an hour and a half she has helped with his aggression, feeding and prey drive. All without using treats and cruel punishment.

Janice knows what she is doing and I am so grateful she was recommended to me.

On top of the visit she has been replying to my messages regarding my dog, answering any questions, all for a price that I believe to be too cheap!

Thank you so much Janice. You’ve helped make a home happier and an owner love their dog even more! X

My wife and I got in touch with Janice after struggling to cope with our 2 year old Labradoodle's behaviour. We have had him since a puppy and he has always be one to take things and become very possessive over them, however it became much harder to deal with following the birth of our first born. We had tried books, videos and even other 1to1 trainers however nothing seemed to be working. I spoke with Janice and she quickly established the cause of the problem and gave me a list of things to work on for the next week, saying that the problem would be solved within 2 weeks. After just a few days there was a big improvement in his behaviour and we are happy to say he is now as good as gold! Despite never having met Janice face to face due to lockdown and this all being done over the phone, you can tell how kind and caring she is. Even saying we can call her anytime day or night! Would highly recommend Janice to anyone having difficulties with their dog, her help was a real life saver. More...

Amazing service! Our puppy Ruby was ruling our lives: calling the shots with what she ate, refusing to sleep alone, howling all night and becoming increasingly aggressive towards my own children to the point where I was afraid for them and afraid to take her out in public. Janice explained what had gone so wrong and how we could put it all right. By following her instructions exactly, we saw a transformation in Ruby's behaviours within minutes and within 3 days, she was a different dog. We have had to remind ourselves to stick to the rules - consistency is most definitely the key! Ruby is now so much happier and a joy for the whole family to be around. I really can't recommend Janice's service highly enough! More...

I would give Janice 100 stars if I could! After getting a lockdown puppy and pretty much making every mistake going by spoiling her rotten, we were at the end of our tethers. Our puppy was ruling our lives and she was calling all the shots! Thinking we knew what to do, when the problems started we googled and were given loads of well-meaning advice. There's plenty out there but none of it was working! After speaking to Janice, she got right to the root of our problems, gave us clear and achievable directions and was right at the end of the phone if we needed her. Janice said it could take up to 2 weeks: in fact, some of our problems were solved within just 5 minutes and everything else within 3 days. We followed the advice to the letter and are now rewarded with a happier, well-behaved, gorgeous cockapoo who is just what we always dreamed of! If you're having problems (of any kind!) make the call now - it's the best thing I ever did! More...

We could not have made it through the last few months without this amazing lady! Janice gave us clear, concise instructions on how to deal with life with an over excited and anxious puppy. She was supportive and calm all the way through and was always readily available to offer further guidance and support when we needed it. She was our rock. We now have a well behaved older puppy who is 100% house trained, happily goes to bed alone in the kitchen, walks well on a lead, has excellent recall and is a joy to own. 5 stars are not enough Janice. Thank, you, thank you, thank you xxxxx More...

This is an answer to your rather vitriolic reaction to my visit to your home and my recommendations. At the time, I sat in your home and explained why you and your daughter were having problems with your dogs. I showed you in detail exactly how to rectify your problem, as I do with all me clients. I left you a write-up in note form to remind you of the salient points. There is a lot to remember I understand that, so that is why those points are written down to aide you. The rest as you know I explained. If you needed further assistance at any point I was only a phone call away. After two weeks you did phone and by your own admission had done very little. As with most aggrieved people it is a lack of commitment which determines the outcome, the situation had remained the same as when I first visited you, as you did not follow my advice so I cannot be held responsible for your own short-comings. For the record you obviously failed to notice my 7 five star reviews from people who did not demean the piece of paper I left but followed my recommendations entirely. The outcome does not happen by magic you have to put the work in first. Kind regards Janice

I think i explained in my response to you the reason why i had waited years, but you obviously didn't read it - i have only just seen your response to my initial review, which is why i have only just responded to you.
My review was totally honest - you barricaded yourself in behind the table, didn't have any contact with my dog whatsoever, insisted that i used my dogs crate as a punishment - you also insisted that i must force my 49kilo dog into the crate, despite me telling you i have a back injury!
You gave no suggestion as to how i was supposed to do this, and merely sat and watched me struggle with my dog.
You were in no way "hands on" - you offered no realistic advice, when you left you gave me a printed sheet of do's and don'ts, and told me, and i quote "do this for 2 weeks, and if you have any problems phone me, but i don't expect to hear from you" - hardly encouraging me to contact you again!

You supplied a service, i was unhappy with that service, and I have the right to review you accordingly - the amount of time that has passed is irrelevant.
It's unfortunate that you don't like what I've said, but i haven't said anything that isn't truthful.

You are correct - i did employ the services of another trainer, who did help me.

Dog Training

This is in response to your reply to my review, which I have only just seen.
I am well aware that I needed to take control of the situation, but as a dog trainer, and I use the term loosely, I did expect you to be "hands on" - instead you barricaded yourself in behind the table, and proceeded to tell me I needed to put my 7 stone rottweiller pup in his cage, every time he did something wrong, but you offered absolutely no help in how I should do that when he didn't want to go in! You were aware I had a bad back, and wasn't physically able to bend down to push/ force him in the cage. I also wasn't happy about using it as a form of punishment when he needed to go in it when we were going out.
I am aware of what a consultation is - but you did not once acknowledge the dog, and in fact appeared scared of him.
You did say if we needed to phone you after 2 weeks we could, but your exact words were "but I don't expect to hear from you" - hardly encouraging!
I'm more annoyed with myself for actually paying you for what amounted to a list of "do's & don'ts" that I could have printed out off the internet myself.

Dear Mrs Wootton. In October 2016 I visited you with regard to your dog's aggressive behaviour towards human beings. After the consultation I advised you to contact me within 2 weeks if you were still experiencing problems. You did not do this but instead posted a derogatory missive which of course I felt obliged to acknowledge and reply, as I take my responsibilities as a Dog Behaviourist very seriously. I was therefore stunned last week I received another notice from you, this being THREE YEARS after the last one. I cannot comprehend why you have waited three years as I would imagine in the intervening period you have made other arrangements with regard to your dog's behaviour and that all is well in this regard. Kind Regards Janice

My dog was constantly barking at us and at the television. I contacted ‘Problem Dog’, and was sceptical when it was said, the problem ccoujd be put right within two weeks, and the training was done in your own home, as I was expecting to take my dog to expensive behaviour classes. I was impressed by the simplicity of instruction and the explanation given for the reason why my dog was barking all the time. After following her instructions to the letter, my dog stopped barking unnecessarily before the two weeks were up. Definitely value for money, because I would of spent more on classes which I didn’t need and I didn’t have to leave my house. I would recommend this company to anyone I knew with a problem dog! Hi Barb I was dismayed to read your comments regarding my visit to you and note you mention my advice did not work after 3 months. I would like to take the opportunity to respond. When I visited and on leaving I stated, as I always do, that if you were not satisfied and saw no improvement within two weeks you were to contact me again and I would re-visit you to discuss the situation and there would be no further costs incurred. On my visit I did explain to you in great detail how to implement my training techniques and showed you how. In addition, the instructions I left with you was a reminder of the most important and relevant facts for you to follow. These training methods have worked very well for the last 20 years. On my profile, and on the details which I am bound to summit to customers, in addition to the estimate, I constantly state that " I leave it for two weeks for you to get on with it and after that time if you are still having problems then I will come to you again and the second visit is completely free of charge". I do not understand why you did not take advantage of such a good offer. I never leave a customer's house without reiterating that you can ring me at any time and if you are not satisfied in two weeks time, ring me and the follow up visit is free. What I do cannot comprehend is that you are complaining now when it was October of last year when I visited Kind regards Janice

We had an issue with separation anxiety and our dog being incredibly bitey when playing. We were sceptical that he could change in a short space of time but it's like we have a completely new dog! Janice was lovely and very good at delivering some home truths that we hadn't accepted. Our issues were due to our own behaviour mostly. It's now been 1 1/2 weeks since she came. Our dog had gone from sleeping in our room to sleeping downstairs on his own. He stays in rooms without following, is a lot quieter and calmer than he was before, and is better when it comes to playing, more with toys, less with hands. It's been a miracle fix for us and we are finally getting our lives back together. We are still following her steps to ensure we can leave him in the house alone for longer periods of time but we have every bit of faith that Leu will get there quickly and soon be off to learn bigger and better things. The help was invaluable and I cannot recommend Janice enough. More...

Janice is so helpful! Really knows her stuff. She said our dog would be sorted in a weeks time and we were very sceptical of this but within 24 hours we’d already seen a massive difference in his behavior. Couldn’t thank Janice enough for the fantastic insight she gave into our dog’s feelings and thought processes and in helping us to help our dog to be the happy, loving but calm dog he had the potential to be. 10/10 would recommend to anyone More...

I would like to thank Janice for her very good advice in helping my friend with her problem puppy, in just two weeks she has seen in great improvement in her behaviour, so all looks to be on the right path.

5 December 2016

We contacted Janice to advise us how to train our new 9 month old puppy to walk on his lead, we were his third home and no one had given him any training, although he was good in the home. I was not impressed that she stayed 1.5 hours with us not moving from the sofa and avoiding our puppy at all costs. I had hoped she would at least demonstrate how to train him on the lead but all she told us was once he obeyed us in the house and knew his boundaries walking on the lead would come naturally!!! NO!! He does obey us in the house and garden but still has a lot to learn on the lead....she left us piece of paper with instructions, it wasn't rocket science and certainly not for the amount she charged us.... DONT BOTHER!

Dear Mrs Hellmen. I was sorry to read that you were less than satisfied with my services. I do state in my proposal how long the consultation will take, how much I charge and I always mention that if you are not happy with the result in two weeks, then you should contact me again and I will arrange another appointment, and that there will be no charge for the second visit. Therefore in reply to your scathing review, I have found that in over 20 years experience, an hour and a half is usually enough time for most people. As for the nine month old pup being good in the home, when I asked you to do a simple task in the house with the dog, you failed miserably, which established the fact that the pup was not good in the house. In reply to you stating that I had not moved from the sofa to give you instructions, I would point out that if you were learning to drive, it is you who drives the car not the instructor. Regarding the piece of paper I left you, it was a reminder of the instructions so you would not forget what I had told you. Finally, you are quite correct, it is not rocket science, but obviously it is to some people !! Kind regards Janice

I had trouble with human aggression with my dog so i hired this company for help. I was rather disappointed with help i received - i was visited in my home for the consultation, which lasted about an hour and a half, to discuss the problems i was having, when it came to her actually meeting my dog i was surprised that she had absolutely no contact with my dog - she didn't speak, touch, or acknowledge him in any way. Her advice wasn't "hands on" at all, she merely told me what to do but didn't offer any solution on how to make a 7 stone Rottweiler go in a crate when he didn't want to for example. When she left, after leaving me with a sheet of "do's and dont's" she said if the problem wasn't better after 2 weeks i could contact her, but got the impression that she really didn't expect any contact regardless of whether the problem was solved or not. Dear Angela. I was disappointed to read your review of my visit to you and sorry that you do not appear to have understood my instructions. It would appear that you do not understand that a consultation means just that, a consultation. I could have asked your dog to jump through hoops but there would be no point as it is your dog and you need to take control of the situation and put into practice what I advised. There is no quick fix. You have to put in the work for the dog to respect you. Angela has I walked away I had every confidence in you, that you would fulfil everything I asked you to do, obviously I was wrong, but on saying that you should have got back in touch with me. In my proposal I gave you the option, after two weeks, to contact me again if you are having problems, at no extra cost to you. If you had bought something from a shop and was not satisfied with it you would soon take it back. Kind regards Janice

Q&As

I know what makes them tick. With this knowledge I make a difference to peoples lives. When customers are at their wits end and do not know which way to turn next. They ring me, sometimes in tears, because they can not cope with their dog from hell, which once was their loving bundle of fun.
Getting in at the ground floor is the best way. When you have a puppy, that's when you need to know what you are doing and its getting it right at this point that makes the difference, not only to the owners but to the dog. To eliminate any problems, you start the minute the puppy poddles into your home, even an eight week old pup will try to rule the world. Its keeping owner and dog together that does it for me.

People have misguided perceptions about how to train a dog. The world and its wife have an opinion on how to do this. There is only one way. I once over- heard a conversation in the hair dresses. This person was describing what kind of dog she was looking for. It sounded like a shopping list. It had to be a breed that was good with children, did not bark, did not mess in the house or chew and was very good on the lead. It was as if she could walk into a shop and come out with exactly what she wanted.
Dogs are like kids, apart from the obvious bits, they are what you make them. If you educate them correctly you don't have problems.
It was this kind of mentality that made me think that dogs out there need help!

I've had over 20 years of curing problems. You can not train dogs by using aversion methods for example; nasty smelly sprays, water squirted in to the dogs face, treats, clickers, electric collars and pepples put into a plastic bottle shaken to distract the dog. These things only mask the problems. Quick fixers do not cure your problems I know I've tried them all. It was these facts that inspired me to write my book.
I am good at what I do and my expertise is affordable for all.
