The historical bank building was breathtaking! There are beautiful stained glass windows! The service of each of the staff was outstanding, especially Abbie Smith who is very skilled and friendly! Do you want to know what good service is, dine here plain and simple! We were on a 15-day cross country RV trip for July 4th weekend, we wanted pizza so we did a quick google and it suggested Popoli. Called and spoke to one of the staff who said they had a patio we could dine on with our dogs and said come on in. We hit downtown with 43' of rig and drove around the block a couple of times trying to figure out where we could park. This is where service 101 started (and it just got better from here). The gentleman that we spoke to (wish I could remember his name) came outside, helped us get oriented to their parking area, welcomed us, got us and our dogs' set up for dinner and gave us the ability to relax for a while which we really needed at that point. So, we order and discover that despite searching for a pizza place they only offer pizza during lunch, the executive chef personally comes out to apologize to us, brings a salad at no cost and says he'll personally oversee the meal along with some additional apologies. The meal was 5 star! The greens were as fresh as can be, the chicken alfredo that I opted for was spectacular, the brought us water for our fur-kids, checked on us constantly which is sometimes a concern when you eat outside and overall delivered an incredible experience! We were personally catered to by 3 of the staff, one being the exec, the meal was wonderful, the help in getting us and our RV into the area went above and beyond, it was just a great experience. Before we got back on the road, my better half went inside to use the restroom, she described an amazing locale, renovated from a vintage bank, very high end feel but warm and a place that you want to come back to and experience. If this is the way they treated a couple of out of towners in an RV that needed a break from the road, I can only imagine how well they treat their local and recurring diners! Superb! More...

This is a really beautiful restaurant and so cool to eat in a Louis Sullivan jewel box.  No idea what other reviewers were talking about when saying the vault looked shabby - that is totally the place to be seated!  They've added outdoor seating that looked like a good option when the weather is cooperating.  Definitely a great place to stop for drinks as they have a really creative drinks menu and the bar area is really nice.  Wish I didn't live so far away so that I could visit more often!Update:  Recently returned and the restaurant was even better than I remembered.  Things I can't stop thinking about:  Steak Nachos, Shrimp Piccata and the Creme Brûlée (with sea salt!).  I think they've changed up their menu and service was excellent!  New management? Popoli is one of our favorite places to go out for dining in Cedar Rapids. This time we were in the small front room area, which was a little louder with shorter ceilings than the rest of the place, but as always the food, drinks, and service were all great. Popoli is probably a bit of a splurge, but is worth it.  Great ambiance, excellent service, delicious food.  I had the pork chop with the bacon-cherry chutney, which was cooked perfectly, had a touch of heat, and was generally full of flavor.  I'm not a drinker, so I can't comment on the wine list, but the cocktails looked good.  I was visiting from out of town for work and if I ever end up back in Cedar Rapids, Popoli will be my first choice for dinner. Nice atmosphere, great service. Too pricey though for the food, and drinks. I spent $150 for two people. Reminded me of an expensive Biaggi's. Only think the meal was worth $75 to $100 dollars based on how well it tasted which was mediocre. My steak tasted a bit burned. We had a great meal here at Popoli's. The service was outstanding, the decor is beautiful the food was excellent.  We were afraid parking was going to be a pain but its not located in downtown proper. Its actually located on the other side of the river with loads of parking options. The spinach artichoke dip was a bit spicy, but really good. The shaved Brussels sprout salad was really really delicious spicy but I was expecting that given the chili paste. I loved the sweet savory heat of it all. We asked about an item not on the menu (pasta with a vodka sauce) and was told they could make it. That was good but my favorite thing was the Berkshire Pork Chop. We were in from Boise, ID, looking for a quiet date night. We had an excellent evening. Started with shaved Brussel Sprouts and shared the Salmon entree. We enjoyed a very nice bottle of Pinot Grigio. We finished with Rhubarb/Berry Cobbler and Salted Caramel Creme Brulee. Passing through town, we hit the jackpot finding this place, so worth the extra $ when food is prepared so well. We had a filet and scallops, Brussel sprouts, wedge salad and Carmel Creme Brûlée. I especially loved the subtlety added ginger in the balsamic glaze on the Brussels! The steak was tender and flavorful cooked to perfection without the overdone amount of salt that most restaurants tend to serve. Beautiful restaurant in an old bank with a neat old vault you can see plus stained glass original to the building. Nice variety on the cocktail menu, I had a mule and it was very good. My first visit was a special occasion and we were so pleased with our visit. The food was absolutely delicious. We had steak, scallops, king crab legs and salted caramel creme brûlée. We had two people checking on us at appropriate intervals and never lacked attention. We love craft cocktails and tried 4 of them! They did not disappoint. To start I was extremely impressed with the ease of making the reservation on line. The next morning I received a call from Jude (the GM) and he was extremely pleasant and accommodating. As my group grew prior to the event, Jude was MORE than accommodating us to ensure are group had a great time and were all very comfortable. My prime rib was huge, wife's tortolloni was average portion size. Took leftovers home. Bar drinks were mixed as expected. This place is a gem in Cedar Rapids. There are not many finer dining resturants in the city. There is something on th menu for everyone. The food is great. When you walk in the door you are treated warmly and made to feel welcome. We had someone in our party who had a walker and they offered to help her and stow her walker and they received it when we were ready to leave. Our server was Great! Made reservation for 4 and then they had a table open for 2 and then proceeded to tell me that the reservation was only made for 2. The table was sticky. The server was nice but didn’t know the menu. The food was flavorful. The presentation of the filet Oscar style could use some help. I asked for side of broccolini and there was a TON of it right in the middle of the plate- not appealing. We had headed for the downtown Czech village area, but our chosen restaurant was closed on this beautiful Monday.  We Yelped, to find something close, and Popoli popped up.  I admit, we might not have chosen it before, but I'm very glad we did.We arrived ahead of any dinner crowd, parked right out front, and were seated by the window.  Our service was impeccable, the menu was varied and elegant.  Of course, we started with their spinach artichoke dip, but this dip was better than any we've had elsewhere, including the perfectly toasted sections of flatbread.   Their house Chianti was a little more than I am used to paying, but it was perfect with the shrimp with creamy lemon sauce.  He had a Stella with his beef stroganoff.  The chef himself delivered our dishes, and we had a chance talk desserts (their summer berry cheesecake was stellar), and sauces.What a lovely dinner!  We will be back. Please pay no attention to any reviews below 5. This place is a GEM in Cedar Rapids! It would be a wonderful restaurant in any city, Cedar Rapids is lucky to have such a great Italian place. I had the wedge salad, bib lettuce with bacon, blue cheese. Light dressing and just wonderful! Next came mussels in a red sauce. Now, most of the time I'm not a fan of red sauce on any seafood but this was exquisitely well done. High scores on this!Beer & wine selection was great! I'll be back, Love this place! More...

Located in an historic repurposed bank from the late 1800’s, the art and architecture are outstanding. We were treated by a pleasant young women and seated at a booth for 4 with the biggest table I ever saw. It took awhile to get menus, then to get cocktails and to order. Long enough for us to fidget but not to get really annoyed. Our waiter was friendly but I question whether he paid attention to our requests as we shared several items and one of us got 2 appetizers for dinner. Our dinners appeared in random order with an inordinate amount of time for everyone to be served. It took so long to get our first course then our main dishes appeared almost at the same time. We sent them back to hold till we finished. The food however was outstanding-they May be confuse with the timing but they do know how to cook,. Server was attentive and patient as we talked, waiting to take our order as we enjoyed the appetizers. The food was only so-so. The steaks didn't have a lot of flavor, the risotto was not good, the pasta was cooked too much and shrimp tasted a little fishy. The atmosphere was great and the offer to put us in the vault was great! This was a business lunch so I was very disappointed in the food but the atmosphere was very interesting and nice. I've been dying to try Popoli's forever and now that we got the chance, I was so swept up I forgot to really take it in. As many have mentioned, this upscale restaurant resides in an old bank and the vault, murals, and modern decor make for gorgeous Instagram material. Situated downtown across from the amphitheater, this is a great date night or special occasion spot. Be sure to make reservations as it gets very busy! The food was outstanding. They brought herb bread and butter to start. We ordered a large bruschetta for the table - my dad was particularly into the balsamic dressing. Matt and my grandmother both ordered lasagna bolognese. One with a side of asparagus. Dad had the chicken scallopini. I ordered the pork chop. Like I said, everything was delicious. Nana is the only drinker of the group, but she said her old fashioned was "nice and stiff". Definitely on the fancier side, but one of the better fancier options I've tried in the area. Its entirely possible I'll be making our anniversary reservations here in the next few months. They really sold me from start to finish, I know I haven't done it justice. This was our first time at Popoli. We enjoyed the architecture immensely. The former bank is a stunning setting for the restaurant. Our food was good. Unfortunately, there was a birthday party in a private room on the side of the bar where we were dining. The group had a sudden influx of guests, which upset our beverage and food service quite a bit. We waited about 10 minutes for initial service, and had to ask for that. Drinks took another 8-10 minutes. Food service was much better as things settled down from the private group. Also, the guests of this private party were SO LOUD we could not hear each other at our table unless we raised our voices almost to the point of shouting. We had 7:00 reservations for our party of 5. We got a call from Jude earlier in the week asking us to change it to 7:30 and they would put us in the vault with no minimum spend requirement which was fine with us. We were told when we arrived that the party in the vault room was just finishing up. We enjoyed the bar and the bartender and 40 min later they were still there in the vault room. Hey you can't blame people for enjoying their night out! There was one open table in the bar area so we asked if we could just eat there and we were told it was fine to do so. The bartender felt horrible about the delay. Due to this, a round of drinks at the bar were taken care of by the restaurant. Which was very, very nice! The interior is absolutely gorgeous and we learned so much about the history of the building from the hostess and information posted on the halls. The menu provided a variety of dishes everyone enjoyed. We were able to choose various wines by the glass and mixed drinks that paired nicely with our meals. Although we were stuffed, we had to sample dessert. The tiramisu is enormous and was easily shared. This was the first time we had bern disappointed with Popoli's. We ordered the calamari, which was very bland and overcooked. I ordered the capresi salad, which came before the appetizer. It was 3 tomato slices with a huge brick of mozzarella, some basil pesto, and balsamic drizzle. It was way too much cheese for 3 slices of tomato, and the basil pesto was not a good replacement for fresh basil. Fir entrees my wife got the filet and I got the seafood risotto. Her steak was good but the potatos were cold. My risotto was dry and not creamy at all. The berry cobbler dessert was good. Service was good but the food was mediocre at best. We waited a few minutes and then got seated. The server showed up after a proper amount of time to look over the drink menu, which is very through. We ordered drinks, which showed up promptly. Our waters stayed full and our waitress only checked on us when she needed to, unlike a chain reataurant where they typically ask you about the meal when your mouth is full of food and then walk away before you could answer. We were met by a friendly hostess who was very informative about the history of the building and the Jude (the manager) was very friendly and accommodating. This was our second visit to Popolis and it was fantastic both times. We ordered an appetizer to share, two salads, enterees, and two desserts. My husband ordered the pork chop special and would highly recommend. I ordered the shrimp artichoke pasta with capers and gave it a 4. I took a good portion of my meal home and it was even better the next day - as many pasta dishes are. The calamari was an excellent choice as our appetizer and the caramelized brussel sprouts were outstanding as a side to our entrees. Waiter was very nice. Bar service seemed a bit slow. A couple of mistakes on checks and brought out wrong dessert. We spoke about 2 different choices and I think he got mixed up and brought out wrong one. We didn't even mention it because it was not a big deal and everything was good. It was very cold where we sat and the women's bathroom was like a meat locker. Also the windex that they were using to clean other tables near us was overpowering. Actually made me cough. We were giving a gift card for our wedding to Popolis. Normally we would not go to a restaurant like Popolis. The service was very good. If you want an intimate date maybe too good as someone checked on us frequently. The food was good, but our options were limited. We checked out the menu in advance so we could determine what was in each dish. My wife does not eat food that is too spicy and neither of us eat asparagus. Most of their dishes had asparagus. To my delight, they did have a couple evening specials that also got added to my list of items I might try. My wife had the meatballs and I ordered the swordfish. Her meatballs were a little too spicy for her but she managed to eat most of them (they were large and I believe she had 5 in total). My swordfish had a sauce on it. One half was moderate and the other half had a thicker coating. All in all we had more than enough food and it tasted good. We topped the evening off by getting a piece of the rhubarb pie (one of my wife's favorites). She said it was good and she really enjoyed it. I choice to skip the desert this evening.All in all for what it is we thought the experience was good. Our biggest complaint about the nicer restaurants in the corridor is that almost all the selections on the menu are a fancy dish. There are no items that are more of a traditional family restaurant. Popolis could easily add a 5 cheese lasagna to their menu with an Italian sausage. Maybe make a sirloin without all the seasoning on it. There are many people that have food allergies or cannot tolerate the items used to flavor the dishes. Again this is not a knock specifically about Popolis, but more about restaurants of this caliber. I feel my wife and I would frequent these types of venues more often if they had a few basic dishes to accompany the fancy ones.We would encourage our friends to try this place provided they liked the fancier dishes. For the price, the food ought to be exceptional and, unfortunately, it didn't meet the mark. The atmosphere was perfect as I was looking for a quieter venue to take my family for a special dinner prior to our girls heading back to school. This was my first visit. Although disappointed, I would give it another shot. Another issue, apparently the restaurant offers 2 for 1 tap beers after 4:00 PM (according to website). Waitress never told us about this. I had been wanting to try Popoli for while now and have never gotten around to it so I was excited when two of my girlfriends suggested grabbing dinner there before heading to a local theater.  We were greeted as soon as we walked in the door and got seated right away.  While we had reservations for 5:30 we probably didn't need them as the place didn't start filling up until closer to 7:00.We had amazing service throughout our meal.  Our waiter checked on us just enough to make sure we never had to seek him out to order, get more drinks, etc., but not so much that he was overbearing and annoying as can sometimes happen.  He had a lot of great suggestions, joked around with us and didn't rush us at all even though we camped at our table for almost 2 hours.Now for the food.  Growing up on the west coast I'm very picky when it comes to seafood and I've found it really hard to find quality seafood in Cedar Rapids.  With that being said the steamed muscles that we started off with were amaaazing.  It was a large serving, more than enough for the three of us to share.  Two of us got the prime rib, which was the special that night, and our other friend ordered a New York strip.  Everything was cooked exactly as we ordered it.  The waiter let us know that it may take a little longer since one of the steaks was ordered medium-well which we were fine with.I have family coming into town next week for the holidays and have already told them that we will be visiting Popoli at some point during their stay. My husband reserved "the vault" room for my birthday. This used to be an old bank; the atmosphere is really cool. Small enough to feel intimate but big enough to not feel crowded. There was a group of ten of us. We received incredible service all night. The food was good, but pricey. The cocktails were the best part! Delicious!  It's great for special occasions or date night. Too long between visits - food fantastic. Interesting menu - difficult to make a choice there were so many very appealing choices. The calimari left us wanting more; the chard and salmon were an innovative pairing; every dish was outstanding - not one person wished they had ordered something different. All talked about next visit to try something else on menu because it sounded so good. The desserts shared - creme brulees - salted caramel and lemon blueberry - were good but salted caramel won hands down. There was not a crumb left of the chocolate item. The RED OCTOBER cocktail was an outstanding start. Nice to have Cedar Ridge bourbon featured - a fave of ours! The service was impeccable - friendly but not intrusive - made us feel right at home. Nice to have table visits by manager and other staff to see how we liked our selected items. We will make certain to have far less time between future visits! Would love to see a return of luncheon hours and hope the new condos provide source of more traffic to make it so! More...

Once again enjoyed the visit. Our group of 6 sat in "the vault". The noise from the bar area echoed a lot into the vault area but most likely because the floor in the bar is stone. I did notice the restaurant made attempts to design the vault area to reduce the sound. Not sure what can be done in the bar area to reduce the noise in the bar area. Throw rugs? Met my husband here for lunch on my birthday, and it was the perfect date. I normally hate going downtown, but there was plenty of parking. The building is an old bank with a lot of the original decor, really beautiful inside and well maintained.  We sat in a booth by the window, and the best part was there was a super cute tiny bat hanging in the widow just outside. This is a business lunch spot, so I am glad I was in business casual. The menu was overpriced and small, but it is such a fun spot that it is worth the little plurge once in a while. We made reservations at Popoli primarily to see the architectural restoration not really knowing much about the restaurant itself. Not only did we find the architecture and interior design to be exquisite but our dining experience was five star as well. The menu was contemporary, interesting and varied and the prices reasonable. Our food was not only presented in an aesthetic fashion but it was delicious . Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Our dinners were served at the right pace and we were not rushed nor did we feel like we were waiting too long. There is not one thing we would change. Amazing steak, coupled with Guinness on tap, awesome staff, and a lot really cool ambiance. The restaurant is an old bank building and listed in the historical places registrar. During the flood the bank was half underwater. Our group had dinner in the "vault" and got a tour of the safe deposit box vault which has been converted into the wine cellar. Would definitely come back and would recommend this as a first choice for any out of town traveler. More...

We had a great dinner at Propolis! We always get a booth, which is so cozy and fun to watch the crowds over at McGrath Amphitheater. The wine choices were nice and I was sooooo happy to say that the beet salad was back on the menu. This alone probably could have brought me back in to Propolis! I usually get fish, but today ordered the filet, medium rare. It was delicious. My husband ordered a filet as well, but ordered medium. It was a bit too cooked for his taste, so if you like it pink order medium rare at this restaurant. The new management was so kind to us and checked on us a lot. We will return! More...

I'm on a restrictive diet these days (no eggs, dairy or gluten), but was thrilled with our most recent experience at Popoli. Everything is made fresh, so the wait staff/kitchen was very accommodating! I ordered the Chicken Peperonata served with risotto without butter or cheese. It was delicious and extremely satisfying. My husband ordered the Rigatoni ala Vodka, his favorite, and loved it. He ordered a side of the sour cream mashed potatoes and said they were great.P.S. Under new GM management -,this is just the best food, apps and drinks -,it can't be put into words!!! We had taken a "break" from Popoli's after one "so-so" dining experience. We were pleasantly surprised. It was dead inside the restaurant as BBQ Roundup was going on, but luckily that gave us all the better service! The food was great this visit. I had the beet salad and salmon. It was very nice. Hosted a dinner party in the private dining toom called the vault for 7 women friends on a Monday night.  First time for 5 of the 7.  We had exceptional service by Jesse and our food was consistently good.  One friend was thrilled to enjoy gluten free pasta and the chef accommodated all her other food allergies.  I enjoyed the tart and sweet POM martini, calamari, and shrimp piccata.  Other hits at the table included the carbonara and the salty caramel creme brulee.  The Sullivan designed building is beautiful and the restoration of the space is superb.  Normally to reserve the vault, there is a minimum charge.  Thankfully, the manager was willing to waive the minimum as it was a 5:30 pm Monday night reservation and the restaurant was pretty empty.  This kind of customer  service will secure my return. I went with my family last week to Popoli. The building was beautiful and our Dinner was fantastic! We were told they were revamping their menu due to being under new management.   We got to sample the bone in ribeye from the new menu, wow, it was amazing. Service was attentive and friendly.
