Physician and trainer owned, the Pittsburgh Fitness Project is an active wellness company dedicated to helping our clients meet their health and fitness needs by designing customized wellness programs.
Nice clean space, friendly staff; I went for the first time with Jake today for personal training. He explained all the exercises we were going to do, and demonstrated them for me. He also explained what muscles we were working and what form I should be having! More...
I've been doing 1:1 personal training with Sandor at PFP for almost two years. He is probably the best personal trainer I have ever had, and I've tried a lot. He is a stickler for good form, understands physiology really well, and thoroughly explains how to go through a movement and what it should be working. He's also good about knowing your personality and what you need from him as a trainer. He has a passion for fitness that's infectious, and truly cares about his clients. I can't recommend him highly enough!! More...
Awesome facility. Was in from out of town on business, found the gym on google, called and they said no problem to drop-in. Specifically came because they had olympic lifting mats and weights, could drop weights etc. 4-5 platforms, lots of Rogue bars, Rogue plates, chalk. Everything you need. More...
Beautiful gym with welcoming coaches and even nicer members! A great place to workout
I have been working out at the Pittsburgh Fitness Project since August 2018. It is a great gym with abundant space, especially for those who prefer to exercise with free weights and using their body weight.Additionally, the gym offers various classes with trainers, who are also available for private training, from workouts concentrating on different parts of the body to yoga sessions. The trainers are professional and extremely knowledgeable in their field. My trainer, Sándor, has helped me lose 24 pounds so far, while concurrently build muscle and physically become more toned. The Pittsburgh Fitness Project is also in a convenient location with available parking, which is a big plus in Pittsburgh. This gym offers a variety of classes including open gym hours and personal training. I have done the "PFP Burn" class several times. It is a tabata style workout (20 seconds of exercise, 10 seconds rest) alternating between cardio and strength training. The class takes about 50 minutes. I've always had Marisa as my instructor and she is nice and very helpful! This gym is pretty big and has a lot of different equipment. They are on the classpass and mind and body app. I would definitely recommend checking it out! More...
This place is a GREAT PLACE to work out. They have great employees!
This gym has excellent equipment and plenty of space. It is never too crowded and the staff is courteous and professional.I do not use the classes provided, and it has been perfect for my needs. Whether you are interested in training or not, this is a good spot for anyone looking to workout in a clean, well built gym for a very reasonable rate. More...
Friendly people. Doesn't feel intimidating to come in and work out.
Love this place! Friendly, knowledgeable trainers who take you through tough workouts while monitoring you carefully so you don’t hurt yourself.
I'm a BUSY social worker (I work on average 65 to 70 hours per week between one full-time job and a part-time job in a crisis center) so I supplemented the Pittsburgh Fitness Project with my home gym and the results are looking very promising. I can walk here and get to the morning classes and its been a great way to condition and improve my stamina. The staff are very welcoming and make each person feel appreciated. More...
The gym was really great good weight equipment lots of space good place to workout
I love this place! My personal trainer, Jake, is amazing! He has helped me so much with my running form and I am now pain free when I run!! The rest of the staff is also very knowledgeable and very welcoming. I love that they use science backed methods to help you achieve your goals. They also have a great class schedule to suit everyones needs. I highly recommend PFP to anyone looking for an amazing place to workout! More...
My massage was GREAT, feeling way less tense.Thank You Josh

Great staff, and now a great new facility. Check them out!
The best all around fitness center. Get the gains. Make some friends.
One stop shop for all of your fitness needs! Relaxed environment with a holistic, result oriented approach!
All levels and personal attention to help you reach your goals. A gym that all other gyms should model after!
One of the best gyms in Pittsburgh! Has awesome classes, equipment, and instructors! Truly a fun workout that pushes you.
After my first barbell session with Tom I immediately added 10lbs to my snatch and 5lbs to my clean PRs. Great instruction with great coaching cues. I'll definitely train with him again. More...
One of the best gyms in Pittsburgh, hands down. A combination of experienced coaches, quality equipment, and a positive environment make this gym above the rest. I'd highly reccommend this gym to anyone that wants to reach their fitness goals More...
Fantastic gym. Not too big and not too small either. The trainers are what make it. Very friendly and welcoming of everyone. If you are looking for an LGBT friendly gym then you need to check out Pittsburgh Fitness Project. More...
I love PFP. Jake is my trainer, and he pushes and motivates me. He also is very knowledgeable with regard to fitness and running. Tom and Brian have their act together. It is great to see management involved and a team that cares for its clients. More...
Tom has an incredibly positive attitude and possesses an impressive amount of knowledge in weightlifting and diet. Of the many coaches and trainers I worked with in the Pittsburgh area, he is one of the individuals I enjoyed the most. I look forward to the next time I can drop into his facility. More...
Just finished up the PFP Strong class. This class has what you need to become real world strong. No matter what your ability or strength level is at, Tom can show you how to overcome yourself and make the progress that you want.

Coach Tom Duer possesses skill, strength and the ability to communicate his knowledge with both novice and experienced athlete's. He is personable, fun and well spoken. We love having him and his staff provide clinics for both our coaches and our athletes at CrossFit B2B. We are very fortunate to have Tom in our community and we highly recommend Tom and The Pittsburgh Fitness Project. More...

I have tried many different gyms and workouts over the years, and until I started working out at Pittsburgh Fitness Project, I never thought I would enjoy working out. I've been at PFP for over a year now, and that is the longest stretch of time I've ever committed to physical fitness. PFP is a welcoming, nonjudgemental, encouraging environment for people at all levels of fitness, and I highly recommend giving them a try. More...
I have been going to this gym for almost about 3 months maybe more. but I hand down love it. Great friendly staff. My Trainer Tom Duer has made the process very easy and I have been getting some great results. They have hours that are very accommodating. If your ready for a new you then give #pfp a try. More...
I've been working out with Tom at PFP for 45 minute training sessions, two to three times a week for a few weeks now and couldn't be happier with the investment. As a nurse who's only 30, I was already feeling the chronic pain of bad body mechanics and general weakness. I'm feeling stronger everyday and am looking forward to being a healthier woman! I have to take care of myself in order to care for others! So, seriously, thanks so much Tom/PFP. Please everyone stop in! Get started! More...
I love this gym. The trainers are extremely knowledgeable and the classes are fun and challenging. Because classes are small, there instructors take a lot of time, particularly in weightlifting classes, explaining proper form and keeping an eye on everyone. This is huge: I've spent a lot of time winging it on weightlifting machines and having no idea if I was doing the right things. More...
I've been going to classes for about a year now, and that's probably the longest I've ever committed to a fitness routine. Jill is the absolute best! The staff challenges you and encourages you to do 5 more reps, 5 more pounds, 5 more seconds.... But it's never too much. Even in the class settings, they get to know you well enough that it feels like a personalized training. Whether you're a regular weightlifter or barely workout, this is an amazing place to be! I first came to Pittsburgh Fitness Project (PFP) three months ago, a little unsure and apprehensive due to a previous so-so experience with personal trainers at another gym. I'm sure many of you have had the same kinds of experiences: being treated like just a number at a huge gym? Having a trainer who neither solicits nor listens to your feedback? Not receiving the additional support that you need to meet your goals, such as info on nutrition or recovery?
Let me state it loud and clear - PFP is NOT that kind of gym! The trainers are professional, well-educated, and genuinely interested in your fitness goals and your progress in meeting them.
My trainer, Tonja, creates individualized workouts for me and is continually challenging me and pushing me *just* past my comfort zone. I work with her for 45 minutes twice a week, and I am constantly reminded of my progress in the mirror and in what I can accomplish in the gym. That puddle I could barely jump over when I came here? Now I'm doing 18" box jumps. The weighted sled that I struggled to pull across the gym? I just pulled one weighing 300+ pounds!
In short, I love it here. I'm thankful that I took a chance on them and encourage you to give it a try, too. If you truly want to invest the time and effort into being a stronger, healthier version of yourself - PFP is the place to be! More...
Full disclosure: I have a gym membership at Gold's and I never thought I'd be into going to a gym that offers a variety of classes like PFP does. I was wrong! I think a lot guys think the way I did before I attended classes at PFP. I still have my regular gym membership, but I thoroughly enjoy attending classes at PFP to switch up my routine.
Tom and the rest of the staff are engaging, friendly, welcoming and really care about pushing you to maximize results. I've really enjoyed the strength and circuit trainings that we've done. Kettlebell swings, sled pushing, pull-ups, bear crawls, deadlifts, abs, and more in a circuit training style will really get you shredded in a hurry!
I recommend going with a friend to your first class to give it a trial run. You most likely will be back after your first class! If you're worried bout pricing, there are some very affordable groupons available. More...
Where to start? This place is perfect- clean, spacious, and welcoming. The trainers are amazing- knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. The small, structured classes are, as I quickly learned, exactly what I needed to be motivated and push myself harder and more consistently than I ever could have imagined. I have been wasting money for half my lifetime “donating” to gym memberships and dreading every second spent “exercising” with no results. PFP provides a free personal assessment, a free first class, and several affordable options to get started. I’ve never felt more comfortable, motivated, and confident, and I encourage anyone at any fitness level to give it a try. You won’t regret it. More...
Amazing place! The staff is so welcoming and knowledgeable. They have a great varity of classes and personal trainers. Jake is an amazing trainer that focuses on strengthening exercises for runners. He also helped me fix my running form so no more shin splints!! I highly recommend this gym. More...
Very clean facility! Very friendly people! Great instruction! Good environment!
The wealth of knowledge and understanding under that roof is amazing . They will plan and set up the best method for your progress after a careful evaluation .
Welcoming environment with fantastic coaching where you can learn or improve your lifting. 10/10 would recommend.
I have gone to PFP since they opened. Previously I was a member at LAF in Bakery Square, and PFP was a welcome change from the big corporate gym atmosphere. The personal interaction between the staff and clients makes for a much more welcoming environment. Tom and Brian have brought in a fantastic staff and created a great atmosphere to workout, whether it is through personal training or group fitness. There is lots of parking available and the location is great. Stop in today to check out PFP! More...
Great place to get the job done. Bootcamps, barbells work outs, kettle bells.... all the bells, lots of extra whistles (chiropractor, massage, acupuncture, dietician) but none of the BS. ❤️
Great environment! Supportive and encouraging staff/team.
Great gym. Great atmosphere!
I'm a known gym hopper. I'm the type who get's excited about a specific training style or class - and then get's completely burnt out on it. I love training with Jake at PFP because he encourages all of my fitness interests. No session is like the last. Some days I squat heavy, others are more HIIT based, and other times we lean into my gymnast background and work on handstands and intricate balances. I just celebrated my two year anniversary and I plan on celebrating many more. And the coolest part is, I'm comfortable with every single trainer, not just Jake. I love working out in a place that is actually judgement free and encourages me to live my best life. PFP truly is my #fitfam! More...
Great coaches and great vibe.
I've been with Tom for several years now as he's gone from strength to strength. His philosophy of training and wellness and vision for PFP are spot-on, as is the culture he's managed to grow there. They train people of all sizes and fitness levels, right up to Rather Serious weightlifters, and nobody is ever made to feel unwelcome or intimidated. Many big companies have bold claims about what they provide in terms of inclusive atmosphere, but fall far short. PFP actually provides.Every trainer really knows their stuff and how to get you to achieve what you didn't think you could. My wife and I are very happy members. More...
Great environment! Supportive and encouraging staff/team. The gym is almost 45 minutes away from home but the commute is worth it!
I had the most wonderful massage by Claudia! I cannot recommend her enough to everyone interested in body work. Not only is she so friendly, kind, and personable, but she also is just super knowledgable and skillful in her work. Go pay her a visit immediately if not sooner :) More...
I avoided this place for a long time because of the price tag. It's definitely more expensive than your typical chain gyms, but I'm so happy I finally made the switch. Great staff, nice facility, and fun classes. (I never took a fitness class in my life before joining this place; after going to a few at PFP, I liked them so much I bought an unlimited pass.) If you're hesitating to check it out like I did, I can't emphasize this enough: give it a try. PFP is worth every penny. More...
I was in Pittsburgh for a few days and looking for a place to lift while I was in town. PFP is such a great facility, great equipment and awesome atmosphere. If you’re ever in town I highly recommend dropping in! More...
I have taken classes and also personal training sessions here for a little over a year. I started out pretty weak and broken down both mentally and physically. I never felt one minute of judgement at any time. Just lots of support and respect for my commitment to improve my health.
There are people from all walks of life at every point in their fitness journey. Older (like me), younger, skinny, overweight, and everyone I’ve encountered (staff and gym members alike) have been nothing but helpful and kind.
Staff is super knowledgeable, warm and friendly. If you are just starting out and haven’t been active for awhile, I recommend investing in some personal training sessions to see where you really are and Just get some good , solid direction to avoid injury. It’s not cheap, but worth every penny. As you improve, you can transition over to the classes and not feel out of place. More...
I have been working out at PFP for over a year and I could not be happier here. It is not fancy...this is not the place to see and be seen. This is a place where people of all ages and fitness levels come to work and improve their health. There is no judgement, just respect for your efforts. If you need a clean, well maintained, facility to seriously work out, this is a great place to be. I highly recommend it if you are just starting out in your fitness journey, as they have a extremely knowledgeable and helpful staff. More...
Great place to work out - they have everything you need without all the BS. Welcoming environment, friendly and supportive staff. They can help you with boot camp style workouts, Olympic lifting, body weight work, personal training and more. It is not the kinda place where people come to be seen and then spend 25 minutes on a treadmill with an US Weekly. It is a sweaty place and it is awesome for that :) Massage, Chiropractor, Dietitian, Acupuncture accessibility also - which is all added bonus. More...
PFP is great for many reasons! Tom and Brian have brought in a fantastic staff and created a great atmosphere to workout, whether it is through personal training or group fitness. After working out at the big gyms, PFP was a welcome change. The personal interaction between the staff and clients makes for a much more welcoming environment. Plus, the location is great with lots of parking! Do yourself a favor and check out PFP! More...
This is a wonderful, welcoming, and inclusive gym. There is no hype, no conceit, just real trainers and real people getting real results. I feel very at home here!
The classes are great, challenging without being overwhelming. The instructors are always changing things up so it never gets boring. The environment is so much better than any of the big box gyms. It's definitely worth checking it out, no matter what your level of fitness. More...
This is the place to go if you want to meet your fitness goals! Since joining I have lost fat and gained muscle in a supportive and fun atmosphere. Tony has refined my diet plan and he keeps the workouts challenging yet interesting. He is very motivational and before you know it the session is over and I’m dripping with sweat.
Definitely recommend Pittsburgh Fitness Project! More...
People there are REALLY nice! They'll help you with modifications if you can't do something and they're always watching out for your form. I've been taking personal training for almost a year and I've made huge gains in my flexibility and strength. I'd recommend this place to anybody that's looking for a gym where people like to put in the work and are not obnoxious. More...
Ive attended Pittsburgh Fitness Project classes over the last 2 years. They will modify the workout to any fitness level need. My personal favorites are PFP Strong and Power Hour. In Nov 2017 I started personal training sessions with Tonya 2x week. My goal was to focus on building strength. She is great at explaining the areas to focus on, working multiple muscles through a single movement, and we have yet to repeat the same exercises. She keeps it fun by incorporating ropes, kettle bells, sled push, boxes, TRX, ski urg, barbell, calisthenics, and stretching into sessions. I've learned so much from her and it was the best decision to begin investing in my health. All the instructors are helpful and motivating. Any doubts I've had about my capabilities have been tested, guided through coaching, and proved my self doubt wrong. Everyone belongs here when you walk through the doors. They truly care and the atmosphere is welcoming. More...
I took a Wine and Squat event class here. This convinced me to purchase a groupon for 10 classes for around $40 which is a great deal. I like groupon for trying new places. Also, I'm already a member at other studios and just wanted a place to fill in the occasional gap where I needed a workout.
The gym is bright and clean. There are lockers for your stuff. Multiple single bathrooms that are large suitable for changing (not stalls, a room with a toilet and sink). Water fountains and bottled water available. Bring your own towel if you're a sweater.
I mostly took the power hour classes which were all great. I particularly enjoyed Jillian's classes. I did take Zumba strong once. I probably would have taken it again, but I was the only class attendee when I went and it felt awkward having everyone else in the gym able to watch. Not sure if this was a fluke or if this class isn't well attended.
If you're looking for a place to workout where the workouts are constantly changing and challenging, I would recommend this place. The only reason I stopped going is because it was similar to a place that I already attend, and I just feel a stronger bond to my original gym. Also, I decided to add spinning and barre to my week rather than more of the same stuff.
Everyone in class, including the instructors, was friendly and found humor when things got hard-- which I find important.
They do barbell training in this gym as well. Which is my only negative. I personally don't enjoy hearing the barbells banging the floor. So if you're an anxious person or have ptsd, you should take that into consideration. More...
Can't say enough great things about this place! The group sessions are great, the people are great, and the results are great. So glad I found it!
Went to their grand opening today and had lots of fun. Their workouts are doable and challenging. They have HIIT mixed with body weight exercises, battle ropes, medicine ball and dumbbell. They have strength classes and Pilates too More...

I attended my first class at PFP about a year ago and have been going regularly since February. I honestly love it there! I live on Mt. Washington so Lawrenceville isn't the most convenient for me, but because of the community at PFP I couldn't imagine going anywhere else. I mostly attend the classes - they have a range of different ones depending on what you are in to - and they are all challenging but can be scaled up or down to match your fitness level. I love Power Hour with Jill and the Sunday morning Strong class with Tom. I also am a part of a strength class created specifically for women by trainers Jill and Tonja, and I am learning so much!Everyone at PFP is so welcoming and supportive - you can tell that they really want to help you achieve your fitness goals. I can't recommend it enough! More...
PFP's facilities and equipment are top-notch. Smooth, clean, and well-maintained barbells and bumper plates for oly lifts. A nice, padded AstroTurf area for stretching/sled-pushing. Nice, custom platforms and oversized racks.I just do the open gym, but Tom (co-owner/founder) is there, and he's friendly and supportive. He offers great suggestions and cues even though he doesn't need to. Occasionally, some other coaches/trainers come in with small groups, and everyone is convivial and funny. Folks put in work and have fun doing it.Great place; I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, supportive environment to work out, either individually or with a trainer/coach. More...
