Q&As

The ability to see students progress from beginner to instrumentalist is a real pleasure, especially when I know that I had a great influence on their musical education. I have recently seen a pupil go from an absolute beginner with me on classical guitar and flute at the age of 8, to a first-year university student at Liverpool University studying music; and that makes all of the work I do worthwhile! It is an incredibly satisfying job to see pupils progress and it is very varied with different standards and musical disciplines being taught.

My previous career was as a military musician, as principal clarinettist within a military band. My career saw me perform in many different countries and to many different people, including the Queen. Forced retirement from the forces at the age of 40 left me with the decision of what I wished to do for the rest of my life, and it wasn't a hard decision to make! All I have ever known is music, so I decided to put my knowledge and experience to good use and set up my own business as a private music teacher.

There are many music teachers out there who are excellent at what they do, and I would like to think that I can classify myself in the same category. Teaching, however, is not the only important part of the job, as it is necessary to be flexible to the student's needs and abilities. Having worked with adults in a teaching role whilst being in the forces, as well as with children around schools for the past 12 years as part of the North Yorkshire Music Service, I believe I have the knowledge and experience to teach at all levels and abilities, and to all ages (currently, my youngest pupil is 7, and my oldest is 73). My friendy and approachable nature make lessons enjoyable, but I am also firm when needed should I think that the pupil is not putting the effort in that is required to improve.
