Oakwood Lofts was founded in early 2018 by Jay Griffiths.
I Started the company after spending 15 years building loft conversions alongside my Father Mick for various major loft conversion companies in and around Sussex.
One thing that became clear to me was that a very large amount of conversion companies were run by salesmen or individuals with no trade background, many of whom had never actually built a loft themselves.

A hugely professional team. Courteous, thoughtful and a delight to have around the house. Jay and his team reflect a commitment not just to customers but also in the deep quality of their professions. Not all lofts are equal, and many companies take shortcuts, but you can see the depth of expertise and care in their work, which extended to getting spindles custom made to match (at no extra cost!!), extra depth in floors for soundproofing and changing the roof light layout so it couldn’t leak, which was a risk in the design. They are also very creative, not only finding great solutions to the inevitable things that happen, also suggesting ideas for other problems I had around the house that had nothing to do with them.But Jay also runs a tight ship and his attention to detail was impressive. He was in control of the schedule at all times, giving me plenty of notice when he needed something, and dealing patiently (and weirdly promptly!) with my 6am Saturday morning panic texts about progress - he always had a plan. His values of service and quality extends to all of his team; the inevitable odd mistake in 2nd stage fix was rectified immediately before I’d barely noticed, and any additional work was priced fairly and invoiced clearly so I understood. In fact, not everything I asked for cost more - Jay was incredibly thoughtful about what changes they could make to keep costs down. I’ve had a lot of building work done over 20 years of owning houses, and Oakwood have been the best value, the highest quality and the most fun to have around. How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
The first and most crucial element in knowing whether your loft can be converted is the hight you have available from the top of your ceiling joists to the underside of your ridge beam. This needs to be a minimum of 2 metres for a loft conversion to be possible.
What do you love most about your job?
For me it’s the final product, that completed loft that the client is over the moon with. No two lofts are the same, every client has their own quirks, styles and designs. I love working closely with every client ensuring the end result is exactly what the client wanted.
What inspired you to start your own business?
After building lofts for so many years for other companies, I decided that starting my own company was the next step In my loft buIlding career. To many companies i know employee sales man to sell a loft conversion. What I think is great about my company is that the person you meet to discuss your loft conversion ideas with is the same person thats going to be building it for you. I think it’s important to create a rapour right from the start. Also, as I’m going to be building your lofts, it means I’m always on site to answer any questions you have throughout the whole process. No need to be chasing company owners via email or phone.
Why should our clients choose you?
I’m a small family run company, this allows me to focus on one loft conversion at a time. This means that my entire focus is on your loft conversion and your payments pay for your job. This allows tradesmen and merchants to be paid promptly avoiding any delays in the build.
