We've just come back from a visit to Chester Christmas market on the Northern Belle and it was wonderful Picked up at Durham station at 8am we were settled in our comfy armchairs and offered a Bellini- rude to say no! . We were in the Harlech carriage with daffodils in the marquetry and on ceiling and it was warm and cosy. We did hear from others on different coaches that it was so cold that they had coats on and blankets so not sure what happened there... During the next 5 hours we were treated to a nice slowly served brunch of yoghurt with granola, honey and apricot then smoked haddock and cheese souffle ending with selection of breads/cakes all served with tea or coffee. Others in the carriage started on bottles of champagne very early and got through a number of bottles before midday! Daz had a pint at noon just to show willing! Taken by coach into city with 4 hours to look round , we went to cathedral and markets. Only downside was about 200 of us having to wait on railway platform for over 30 mins trying to keep out of way of other travellers in freezing weather Journey home was leisurely with champagne and canapes, salmon roulade, turkey, cheese board, cheesecake then coffee and petit fours plus bottle of wine. Arrived back in Durham at 10.15 sleepy and needing to lie down! Not a cheap day out but a Christmas treat to be remembered. Staff and service were superb. More...

What a fantastic experience from start to finish. We enjoyed every moment of our trip to Chester Christmas market, from the excitement of watching the train pull into the station to getting off 14 hours later. The carriages are really beautifully furnished, the service is excellent, the food is exquisite, the seats are so comfortable and the pace of travel is completely relaxing. Chester was wonderful and I’m only sad that it doesn’t feature again in 2020 as I would book it immediately. I liked the fact that we could combine a journey on this lovely train with a 4 hour stop in Chester, rather than just a round trip train experience. If you consider the price of a first class train ticket, add on the cost of 5 star restaurant food, Laurent Perrier champagne and a decent bottle of wine (all included in this experience) the cost is not expensive at all. The most wonderful experience you will want to repeat every year. Nothing is too much trouble, your wish is their command. Food is amazing and destinations are visited in a most delightful way. Another absolutely wonderful day celebrating Christmas on The Northern Belle Luxury Train. Lady Frogmorton and I have been lucky enough to experience this extraordinary train several times before, but this time we took Sophie Martin and George Jones with us, which made rhe day even more special. Exemplary service, delicious food, great entertainment and sumptuous surroundings. We were welcomed on board with several glasses of Champagne and delicious Canapés, then we enjoyed Beetroot Cured Gravadlax with Salmon Mousse and Potato Salad. We were then served a delicious Parsnip Soup. I always marvel at the skill of the staff who serve the soup from a Turrine on a moving train without spilling a drop! The main course was a Ballotine of Turkey and Goose with an absolutely wonderful Orange Spiced Stuffing, with Dauphinoisse Potatoes. Tenderstem Broccoli, Carrots and a deep, silky, rich gravy. The Cheeseboard was a treat, as always, then we rounded things off with Christmas Pudding and Cheesecake, Coffee and Mince Pies. As I have said before, there's a big difference between 'cheap' and 'value for money'. This most certainly is not cheap, but it is remarkable value for money. Sunday 15th July 2018 saw us standing on platform 13 at Bristol Temple Meads awaiting the arrival of The Northern Belle for our trip to Weymouth. Once the train had pulled in we were warmly greeted by the on-board train managers, James and Chris and then shown to our seats in the fabulous “Warwick” carriage. Our stewards for the day were introduced, Erica and Dominic with Mihai taking the lead. Once again the table was beautifully laid with sparkling glassware, polished cutlery, crisp white linen and finished off with a lovely table decoration. The stewards also looked awesome in their burgundy day livery. Once on our way, our stewards, Mihai, Erica and Dominic worked tirelessly to serve peach bellinis, followed by the brunch consisting of fresh fruit salad; scrambled egg wrapped in salmon on a crumpet garnished with crab, tomato and hollandaise sauce; various pastries and copious cups of coffee (or tea if you preferred). On arrival at our destination station of Weymouth we headed to the seafront to enjoy a drink and ice cream whilst soaking up the sunshine and then headed over to the harbour to visit the Dorset Food Festival. After a very pleasant afternoon enjoying the sights, sounds and sunshine of Weymouth seafront and harbour we made our way back to the station for our journey home. After the red carpet treatment on the station platform, we settled back in our seats whilst Mihai, Erica and Dominic (now in their black dinner livery) welcomed us back on-board with Champagne and canapés. As we had journeyed to Padstow yesterday we opted for a slightly different dinner menu which consisted of a ham hock terrine accompanied by a selection of bread; breast of chicken for the wife whilst I had the steak served with crushed potatoes and a selection of vegetables; a vast cheeseboard; mandarin tart; all accompanied by a very nice bottle of wine and to finish the meal, coffee and petit fours. Delicious...! Again, most definitely “our compliments to the Chef” - Ritchie, you did us proud. Thank you James, Chris, Jan and all the stewards who stopped to say “hello” throughout the day. We certainly had another grand day out in the company of The Northern Belle Team, all of whom worked incredibly hard and are a credit to the Company, thank you once again one and all, it was brilliant from start to finish. My Partner and I travelled on The Northern Belle on the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party yesterday, Sunday 29th July. It was a very special birthday treat from my Dad and two Sisters. It was a very special experience, the train, food and service were excellent. However, we didn’t travel to a specific destination and kept stopping and waiting in the middle of nowhere for far too long. As a result, the afternoon tea and the experience were very drawn out - I’d estimate approximately 2 hours longer than necessary. We weren’t the only passengers to be restless and wonder why we were back-tracking at one stage when we were still an hour from Didcot. We departed Didcot at 12:25 and returned at 7pm, a very long time for afternoon tea, albeit a luxury one. I was also disappointed that there wasn’t a luxury tea menu. I understand for health and safety reasons you don’t want people using teapots and strainers with loose leaf tea but a luxury range of teabags would have been preferable to being served a standard Twinnings Earl Grey tea bag in a milk jug. Once on our way, our two stewards, Ellie and Jacqueline, worked tirelessly to serve peach bellinis, followed by the brunch consisting of fresh fruit salad; scrambled egg wrapped in salmon on a crumpet garnished with crab, tomato and hollandaise sauce; various pastries and copious cups of coffee (or tea if you preferred). All this as well as spectacular scenery en-route. On arrival at our destination station of Par, we boarded a coach which was to transfer us to Padstow. This journey took us around an hour which we enjoyed in the company of our guide, Laura, and driver, John. Laura was very informative providing us with snippets of history and stories of Cornwall - they do say you learn something new every day and we certainly did! After a couple of hours enjoying the sights, sounds and sunshine of Padstow we returned to the coach for our journey back to Par station during which our guide, Laura, provided us with more Cornish history. Back at Par, The Northern Belle pulled in, the stewards (now in their black dinner livery) alighted to roll out the red carpet for our journey back home. After we settled back in our seats, Ellie and Jaqueline welcomed us back on-board with Champagne and canapés and again worked tirelessly to serve dinner which consisted of a trio of fish accompanied by a selection of bread; breast of chicken, crushed potatoes and a selection of vegetables; a vast cheeseboard; summer pudding; all accompanied by a very nice bottle of wine and to finish the meal, coffee and petit fours. Most definitely “our compliments to the Chef” - Ritchie, it was fabulous. Thank you James, Jan and all the stewards who stopped to say “hello” throughout the day - we do appreciate it and know how busy you are.
