We have a very delightful time. Delicious food and excellent, friendly service. Been here a few times and definitely will be back again.

Kudos to the staff on a particularly hectic night. Our party of 4 decided to stop by Max’s prior to attending a Fringe Festival performance at the Eastman. Upon arriving, it was clear other guests had similar plans. It was also apparent that the restaurant was short on staff. With great aplomb, our order was taken and served, with time to spare! It’s easy to be great when there is no pressure! To be great under pressure is superb! We shall return! More...
Fantastic dinner with great service and a cozy atmosphere.
Max of Eastman was so good and lucky to be right in the middle of @rochester_fringe Festival which was a blast. Started with an heirloom burrata salad that was excellent followed by a bucatini crab special that was equally as good. Great service and they even threw in some free appetizers because of a connection at the table "always a bonus to have good friends/family". A great spot downtown that is definitely put this one on your list. More...
I entered into a bar area that reminded me of an Edward Hopper painting... a little stark but somehow welcoming just the same. The furnishings appear to be dated but in good condition. The dining area is small and unpretentious... Like a restaurant in a gangster movie... minus the gangsters. More...
Service was outstanding. We were served efficiently at the bar, not rushed, and seated when we were ready. Our table was a little cramped but no complaints. They are working with limited space. Andrew the chef is great at making 5 star flavors come to life!
Allison the bartender is top notch and fantastic rack of lamb!
We had just dropped our son off at Eastman School of Music went we wandered over to Max'. We had no idea what to expect when we walked in. We were immediately greeted by Miss Margaret who welcomed us in with a warm smile. We started with the littleneck clams, which were amazing. We were already hooked when the spaghetti with crab meat, mint and jalapenos came. It was AMAZING! Overall, our lunch was outstanding. The food was delicious and Miss Margaret was equally as awesome. Sara was amazing..... A must try when in Rochester for sure.
I chose Max for a business dinner and was definitely not disappointed... Max Chophouse resides in a little, non-descript plaza on Monroe Ave. I've driven by 100 times and never noticed it. I absolutely love these little places hidden in plain sight... certainly not much to look at from the street. More...
Decent place to go take a loved one for a lovely meal , well light dining area with a great staff who goes above and beyond to ensure great service
You cannot go wrong with the food here. Perfect date spot, grab dinner and take in a show.
Always an excellent meal.
Great steak and wine experience...service was excellent
Max's did an AMAZING job with my wedding reception. They are so accommodating and will do everything to make your day perfect. Margaret, Mary and the staff made sure everything went off without a hitch. Not to mention, the food is incredible and the space looks beautiful no matter what time of year. Would highly recommend!! We had a very good meal. I would still recommend tourenedos over Max's. I prefer Max's over black and blue. We had 22oz bone in strip. It was essentially a 16oz normal strip because when the steak came out it was already separated. I don't think I would opt for the 22 oz again. The steak was cooked correctly and tasted great. Full flavored meat. Better than black and blue but not as good as tourenedos. Crab cakes were great. I'm not usually a fan of them normally but these blew me away. Very rich and not even a hint of fishiness. The bourdelaise sauce was great. The best I've had anywhere. The baked macaroni side was fantastic. Definitely recommend ordering it. It was rich and heavy but really great. The mushroom side and brussel sprout side were good but not great. Again, better than black and blue but not as good as tourenedos. Our table of four wasnt seated until 40 minutes after our reservation. We didn't sit down for out 7:30 reservation until 8:10. The wait staff didn't show any urgency after we were seated despite us having a long wait. I almost took a star off for that. Things happen...but at least show a little urgency if you know someone has been waiting a while. The bar area is small and makes waiting for a table difficult. More...
I have never been disappointed by their steaks or sides. There's more variety in appetizers/specials/desserts, and more variation in quality.Service is consistently good, although it's not uncommon to wait ~15min to be seated, even with a reservation. More...

I don't eat here often at all, but eating a 42 oz porterhouse more than a couple times a year probably isn't the best thing for me or my pockets. That said, I absolutely would with no regrets. Always delicious. More...
OMG it was the best food ever I had the surf and turf everything was done to perfection the wait staff was the best they answered all my questions they were so polite and patient with me. Easily top two or three steakhouses in Rochester.
Cosy with great service. Or party of 8 was very happy with the food selection and quality.
Love coming here... always great food and great service
First the good. The steak was excellent. The sides were tasty and plentiful. Good atmosphere, we had one of the better tables to sit at. Now the not so good. The drink I had was horrible, margarita. 15 bucks. Our server was incredibly slow and not interested. I love Max’s but a few bad moments hurt the overall experience. An expensive night but a great steak. More...
Great food and service. Not cheap though.
Delicious food and wonderful service
Thea is the best bartender in town! Her service was amazing and her personality was top notch. It was my first time in, certainly not my last. Food was out of this world.
Had a great time at thier monthly charity dinner class and event
Always great food
Called for information about a gift card. Very helpful.
Amazing food and great bar service! The steaks were cooked to perfection. Never would have known of this gem by just driving by.
My boyfriend and I went for dinner there this past Saturday to celebrate my birthday and our experience couldn't have been better! Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive and the food was great! My boyfriend and I both ordered the filet mignon and both of our steaks were cooked to perfection. We also had the frites, brussel sprouts and mac and cheese to share and they were all very good. We will definitely be back! More...

I had an 8 ounce filet... perfect medium rare with a house glaze that was an ideal complement. I sampled the mac & cheese and mushrooms and onions and both were delicious. I didn't order desert but I sampled three of them. Peanut butter pie, a fantastic chocolate cake and a special bananas foster creme brulee that qualifies as one of the best things I've ever put in my mouth. So good! For wine aficionados there is an extensive wine list. We tried three bottles and all were fantastic.Max Chophouse is a hidden gem in Brighton. Exceptional. Max Chophouse is one of our favorite restaurants for a special occasion. The food is phenomenal and the service is great. The wine list is a little expensive but comparable to the overall cost of the meal. Our steaks (hanger and filet mignon) were all cooked perfectly. The sides (mac n cheese and brussel sprouts were well seasoned and great for sharing- we got 2 for a party of 4). We also shared the cheese course. Lover everything!!! Do not be fooled by its location. This is truly a hidden gem for the people who know where to look. More...
Best steak I've had in rochester. Blows char out of the water. Dim , simple upscale restaurant atmosphere. Not loud at all and was able to enjoy my time spent here. I decided to Ear at the bar as I was by myself, and the bartender was extremely helpful. Took the time and initiative to have a conversation with me and found out I was an out of town traveler and a bit of a foodie. On her own she decided to write me a list of the best restaurants in town that she would recommend. I believe I had the ribeye , with blue cheese butter and horseradish on the side. Both sauces phenomenal, steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Got an order of frites on the side, the aioli was delicious as were the fries . Was pleasantly surprised with the flavors and experience. More...
Very deceiving from the outside for being high end but the food inside is excellent. Just be careful with the a la cart sides because they add up quick.

Really good local Steakhouse. Sarah was on point with service. Rib eye was prime and right. Good wine list.
We visited here a few weeks ago. We loved everything about this place! Starting with the staff: everyone was extremely friendly. The food was fantastic as well. If ordering steak it's a bit on the pricier side, so you have to prepare for that ($30-$50), but everything else seems pretty reasonable.Another highlight of the night were a couple guys at the bar who bought us some drinks after having a short conversation. Extremely friendly people, great resturant and staff. More...

Amazing food, a tight date night atmosphere.
Out here on business and working late, I called at 9 and asked if they could accommodate me showing up around 9:30 or 9:45 for dinner.....”absolutely.” The filet was huge and cooked perfectly. Everything was worth the price...I would definitely return if back in the Rochester. More...
The best food in town; a must try is the Crème Brûlée with an oaky Chardonnay.
Can be a little pricey but the food quality is unbeatable. Perfect date night spot.
Excellent meal shared with friends. Seems like we tried a little bit of everything. We had wine, cocktails and beer among us. Then salad, oysters and other apps. For entrees, of course, a delicious ribeye (prepared to perfection), fish and a burger. Dessert include a chocolate, decadent thing and rice pudding which we all loved. Pretty good coffee, too! Need to go back much more frequently. To me, one of two top steakhouses in Rochester (the other is Tornuedo's in the Inn on Broadway). More...

This is my favorite steak house in Rochester, my wife and I always find an excuse to come here. I do have one complaint and it bothers me to my core... the menu's font is comic sans. UPDATE... they removed the comic sans font from the menu, I can’t say a single negative thing about this restaurant. More...
UPDATE: They changed the menu font and everything tastes better. However, I’ve left my cantankerous original review below as an in memoriam to their previous font choice. ————————————————————————Seriously, great place. I agree with Chris Maloney though-that comic sans menu is atrocious and a complete blight to the overall experience. I want to say I'm overstating this but COMIC SANS NEEDS TO GO! WHO'S WITH ME?! That is all. Great steak. More...
Best steak in Rochester... among other awesome food choices.
We got the filet and ribeye and both agreed it was amazing! Good service. Would totally go back every week if the pocket allowed for such.
The quality of the food justifies the high prices. Best $15 hamburger in town.
Love the food, healthy options. Good quality and nice atmosphere. I've eaten here several times and it seems to be consistent. Meat actually cooked to the temperature you ask for and everything seems to be fresh. Waiters and waitresses are friendly and attentive and knowledgeable. My wife and were looking for a constant restaurant to have dinner and Max Chophouse came to mind. We have had dinner here before and we were very pleased with the service and the quality of the steaks and sides. Today we arrived at 5:45pm we had reservations for 6pm, and the staff was busy setting up for service. Our hostess showed us to our table, our server Sarah greeted us and quickly offered us drinks, she also made recommendations for wines. Sarah was very attentive and very pleasant, my wife ordered the Rack of Lamb which she said very tender, juicy and delicious, I had the crispy skin Sea Bass, everything was very good and Sarah was very knowledgeable and very helpful. It was a very good start to weekend. More...
I've been to Max Chophouse twice now, and both times have been very good. I had the filet mignon, and it was cooked perfectly. I also tried the broccolini, mashed potatoes, honey thyme carrots, and xxx Mac and cheese. All were delicious. Our waitress was very nice and attentive to our somewhat large group. I would recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a good steak. More...
Expected food to be great. It was, delighted our server was wonderful. She had a sense of humor and a sensitivity to our reason for being there. Loved our experience.
Amazing gem of a high end steakhouse hidden away in an old strip mall in Brighton. Great whiskey and wine selection to go with the top notch food offerings.

I was only there for a Pre- Show event. But hors d’oeuvres were very good. The personal was very courteous.
My boyfriend and I were here on a Friday night, and it was pretty crowded so reservations are suggested since the restaurant is pretty small. There's a decent size bar area where you can dine at too it seems. The restaurant is dimly lit and cozy. We were seated at the tables with the booths along a mirror wall. I think the booths need renovation because the leather was peeling, a bit uncomfortable against your legs if you're wearing a dress. The service is prompt and friendly. My waitress did great telling us the specials with a lot of detail. For apps we had the clams casino and the beef tartar. Both were delightful! The clams casino was so full of flavorful and the texture was great. It had a toasty fragrance and almost kind of sweet which offset the savory taste very well. I really like the beef tartar's soft texture. There wasn't a ton of in your face flavor, but it had a deep meaty flavor that I appreciated. Eat it with and without the tangy sauce that accompanies it. You'll appreciate the difference in flavor. For entree we both got the prime ribeye steaks, with sides of pommes frites and brussell sprouts with bacon. My boyfriend's ribeye was cooked well, rare like he asked for. Mine was a little odd, some parts were medium well and some were the medium rare that I requested. That's fine because the meat was soft, almost melt in my mouth. My steak came with the bone marrow sauce, which was a very savory sauce. Ask for it on the side in case you want a clean steak. My boyfriend's steak had a guiness glaze on it. It was a sweet glaze, so some may or may not like it. I liked it, it complemented the savory streak well. Our sides were pretty good too. The pommes frites (fancy way to say french fries) were crisp and the sauce it came with was fatty and complements the fries well. The brussells were cooked well, they were soft and not bitter at all. I can barely taste the bacon unfortunately. We also had some drinks. An old fashioned and a dark and stormy. I'm not a fan of old fashions but I enjoyed my dark and stormy very much. It tastes more alcoholic and less watered down than other places I've had it at.We were too full for dessert but the menu sounds wonderful. I'd definitely be back. More...
I went to this restaurant for the first time on Friday night for a birthday dinner with my parents and boyfriend. The whole experience was absolutely perfect. Our server was very attentive and knowledgeable. We started with a nice bottle of semi dry Riesling from Fox Run Wineries. It's was good but sweeter than I imagined. Our server brought out a hot bread basket. I picked a rosemary sea salt bread and it came with a curry butter, which was delicious. We ordered the crab cake appetizer which was really good as well because it was mostly made of crab. I hate when you order a crab cake and it's mostly breading, but this was not the case here! Since I was at a chophouse, I had to get a steak. I ordered the 6 ounce filet mignon. It was so delicious and cooked perfectly. It comes with a sauce (I got the bone marrow) but then you also can add flavored butter to put on top. And we ordered four sides for the table to split. We got the macaroni and cheese-OMG!! We also ordered the roasted brussels sprouts with bacon and shallot butter, creamed spinach with Parmesan, and carrots. I don't really care for carrots normally but these were out of this world. It's a tad pricey but if you want good service and phenomenal food, you need to pay more. We will definitely return! More...
Absolutely the best in fine dining in Rochester. Always our first choice when treating ourselves. Tony has taught and trained his staff well to the point that he is not there in the evenings. Had dinner with my husband Saturday night. Wonderful meal (cheese plate, filet mignon with Guiness glaze, NY strip steak, brussel sprouts, warm potato salad, and dessert of pumpkin creme brulee and an olive oil apple cake with caramel drizzle, whipped cream and sugared walnuts! Fantastic meal!!!!
New menu same great steaks. Three of us shared 42 ounce bone-in porterhouse. ($100)) special. 30 oz of steak servings. Waitress looked at our party and said it would feed us. She was right. Cooked perfectly to requested medium rare with excellent charring on outside. Great residual drippings on plate (comes sliced). No sauces needed although we used some of Max upscale version of A-1 steak sauce. We loved our collective steak! We loved the side of Max Mac n Cheese. We liked then Brussels sprouts (Revelry has better). We ordered drinks. The Manhattan on the Rocks was a plebeian well drink diluted with too much ice. (Revelry has inspired Manhattans). Service was perfect. We had a great meal. Can't ask for much more than that. More...

I was there yesterday for a wedding. Everything was perfect. It's a beautiful place. Everyone who worked there was professional, efficient, and extremely courteous. They moved around seamlessly and drew no attention to themselves. They never once detracted from the event. The women's bathroom was very small, but spotless where we were. I mention this for anyone that has an event there and needs to change out of a dress or something, or your bridesmaids getting ready at once. You won't be doing that. There is a regular stall and a handicap stall and a small space, really only for one, in front of a mirror. I don't rightfully know about any other facilities they have. You'd have to ask. It certaintly served its purpose for the event I was at though, which was approximately 40-50 people at the reception. Again, it was spotless - and as every female knows, if our bathroom is a disaster area, don't eat there. The decor was gorgeous. Giant floral arrangements on pedestals. Tiny white lights on the trees in the courtyard. The surroundings outside were well maintained. The grass was cut perfectly. The outside benches were free of any kind of debris. You didn't have to worry about breaking a heel on their grounds or ruining your outfit sitting in any of their outside seating areas. Plenty of possibilities for a lot of scenic photographs. The room we were in was large and pristine. There was room enough for a beer/wine table, an Hors d'oeuvre table, spot for a DJ, a gift table, a picture table, a seating arrangement name tag table, a dozen or so white tables, a few tables for the buffet - and with all of that, there was plenty of room left for a dance floor and no one felt crowded. Even maneuvering between tables, there was enough room to get by without the threat of running into another chair. The tables were just the right size to seat 6 comfortably each. The centerpieces didn't take up a lot of room. And again, the lovely professional staff did NOT hang over your shoulder, at all - when you were done eating or drinking something, they would just silently appear and remove what needed to go. The food must be mentioned. It was FANTASTIC. Should you have an event there, I urge you to look into the roasted vegetables. They were the best I've ever tasted. I don't think enough good things can be said about this place, right down to the courteous valet attendants. Well done, Max of Eastman Place. More...

Outside appearance is a bit deceiving. Amazing food. In the pricy side but well worth it.
Best steakhouse in the Rochester area. Period. The "Cowboy". There is nothing in the area to compare it to. Perfect place to take a date. Expect to pay $150- $200 for two.
Properly done. In every direction.
The best steaks in Rochester hands down. Our favorite place for date night.
Steak was cooked perfectly, desert was good as well. A little expensive but good food.
Steaks arrived on time and perfectly cooked. Service was friendly and prompt. Good for businesses, anniversaries, first dates or any other circumstance where a great first impression needs to be made.
Great atmosphere and food.
Great steaks and service
Best food that I have had! It is well worth the price. Service is great. It is a small restaurant try to get a reservation.
I have eaten here in the past, but I forgot how great this place is. A nice selection of steaks, some specials, many regular menu items. Two of us had the 20 OZ prime ribeye. It was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth. Phenomenal piece of meat and the best steak I have had in Rochester in a long long time. My wife had the 12 oz fillet, which was equally amazing. She wanted a bit of pink so ordered medium. It still came out too red but she didn't send it back as the outside was perfect for her and it was large enough that she took it home and when she reheated it, that red middle was cooked to her liking. I did taste it and it was about as good a fillet as I've had around here. Several other specials stood out. Our friend got the bone in strip, which looked fantastic. They also had a 42 oz porterhouse for sharing ($100) and they'll cut it up for you, making it a great shareable steak, similar to what you'd see in Florence. There was also a cowboy cut ribeye with a bone that I think was 30 OZ but that might not have been the size. It was big. Sides were excellent. Pommes frites were delicious as well as the asparagus. We had the oysters as an app. They were a bit small, but very tasty and had a delicious lemony drizzle over them. The chop and "other salad" (I can't remember which it was) were both excellent too. The steaks were all seasoned perfectly and cooked on a hot hot grill, crisping up the outside while keeping the inside perfect. This all starts with great cuts of meat. They do wet and dry aging here. No dry available that night, not that it mattered to us. The wet was incredible. I'll be bringing a client here in a couple of weeks. I can think of no better place to get a steak at the moment. I do have my faves, but this one just took the top spot. It's pricey, but if you want an outstanding meal with excellent, yet not overbearing service, this is amongst the best we have in the Roc. More...

Wow! What a gem! We were in town for just a night and based on other reviews decided to give this place a try. It's a nice small intimate setting with white table cloths and the level of service that implies. We sat at the bar and had a great night. Had a wonderful dinner here. Very pricey, but the food was good. Just wish the portions were a little bigger for the price. They didn't have a drink menu when we went, so I just ordered a couple glasses of Reisling not realizing they were $10/glass... definitely could of gotten a bottle of that exact wine for less than the price of one glass! I know you're paying for the experience, but it still would have been nice to have a price list available. Also, I wasn't a fan of how tightly they pack you in there. It was a few days before Valentine's Day, so I don't know if it was because of that or what, but I felt like we were sitting on top of the tables next to us. More...

Max is my go-to steakhouse in Rochester. I've had excellent food and superior service every time I've gone. Prices are high but I've never had a single dish that wasn't worth the tab at the end of the night. The only thing I've experienced that was unpleasant was first time I went. I was seated at the very first table in the front room on a very cold winters night, before the little entry vestibule was built, and was hit with freezing air every time the door opened. With that vestibule in place, I assume that no longer occurs. As a result I always reserve a table in the rear dining room when I go now. I find that space very quiet, relaxing and more conducive to a fine meal. Because the bar can get very busy, the long narrow dining space in the front room appears tight and crowded. However, it looks like a good space for casual apps & drinks. More...
My husband's ribeye and my lobster tail were absolutely phenomenal!! The sides were incredible too. Got the the frites and smoked Mac and cheese. The reason for the 4 stars was that my filet mignon was one of the worst I've ever had! Flavorless, tough, and just nasty. Brought the leftovers home to my dog! We make filet mignon at home that is incredible, so it was hard to find anything good about this filet. However, everything else we had was top notch, including dessert, so I would be back for that reason. I just wouldn't order the surf and turf with filet again. More...
Nicest, coziest, little Manhattan-style restaurant in Rochester. Just dined here for the third time. Each time was exceptional. Each experience better than the last. Smart, personable, professional staff. Terrific menu. Incredibly delicious food. Great wait staff. Oh, and the manager is charming. Go. More...
Excellent food and wonderful service! Can't wait to come back!
Unparalleled service & creative menu with a comprehensive wine list. After annihilating my strip steak, I ordered one of each dessert. #dontjudgeme

The best steak in Rochester.
Definitely worth the price. I would put this up against any NYC steakhouse. The salted caramel creme brule was amazing.
Best steak place in Rochester.
Definitely pricey, but it's the best steak in the city. And OMG the mac and cheese is superb too. The restaurant itself is in a strip mall, and it definitely doesn't look like much from the outside. The decor is very traditional, and I get the feeling it's where Rochester's well-to-do are regulars. Service is great too. More...
I'm a fan of a high ceiling dining room. Just like Cipriani and all the high ceiling places I've been to. When the place is big, I can breathe better and it feels clean. Anyway, our group came here for our last dinner in Rochester (a farewell dinner and toast). It was organized beautifully. We were seated in a big dining hall. Using the elevator, you find the restroom located on the 2nd floor. The food was pretty good. The service was ok (some very good, some good). I noticed the moment the group made a lot of requests, the stress over trying to please everyone would be a stressful work for the evening. This of course, goes both ways. Remember to keep smiling. Some had filet mignon and some ordered duck. I went with the chicken. The chicken was prepared nicely, juicy and tender, except the side dish that came below the chicken. Matching food is like matching a soulmate. Chicken with bread crumb is like having wine with juice. Even for someone with the food allergy, I think these 2 don't quite match. Just an opinion, so don't think it was a bad idea. I finished my chicken and left the rest on the plate. Still very thankful for the food I ate. I enjoyed my time here, that's important. More...
I went there the night before dental surgery expecting this to be my last steak for 9 months It was not disappointing. The service was excellent, the bartender suggested her favorite martinis and the steaks were melt in your mouth good.
We celebrated my hubby's birthday in March. We ordered some oysters and champagne to start, a gigantic ribeye bone-in steak for two, and a side of roasted broccoli. We took the leftover steak pieces home and fed them to our Havanese pups. A delish time was had by all members of the family. Note that this is a little, unassuming place. But it's a cute joint with serious steak chops. More...
OMG is this place good. The steaks are perfectly prepared and present, the sides are beautiful, the service is flawless, the wine list is extensive , the cocktails are beautiful, the setting is wonderful and it is a great night to spend with friends .
If you want an incredible dinner go here immediately! One of the best places in Rochester!
Had an amazing meal we shared the Pork belly Tacos and Oysters for appetizers. Our entree was the Cowboy bone in Ribeye and for our two sides the pomme frites with white truffle sauce and roasted broccoli... hazelnut creme brûlée for dessert. More...
This is the place we compare others against. The food is the best we have had in Rochester. Yes it is small, and not cheap, but it is also quiet. While the other Max's (Eastman) is ok, this one is far better. Service is excellent, parking is free right in front of the entrance and plentiful. This is the place for date night; because she deserves the best. More...
I arranged a group of 9 for a business dinner here and start to finish excellent is all I can say. Most but not all of us had steaks. My strip steak was delicious and cooked perfectly. Lobster that someone else had was also perfect. Sides, salads desserts and service were all great. Max is small, feels like NYC and is definitely the place to go for steaks in the Rochester area. So I've been here twice, both visits years apart, and have felt the same way about it each time: good, not great. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I could. Standard good steak, formal service, boring dining room. Innovative? No. Perfect for traditionalists? Yes. Looking for a place to impress a date or your business clients? Max's Chophouse would work for both. I guess I just don't feel particularly inspired by the place. The hangar steak is excellent and filet mignon was good too. I would appreciate a little bit more char on the steak to lock in some flavor. Or maybe I'm just partial now to more wood-fired steaks? Not sure. The bar is good: drinks are well-balanced and the wine selection is varied and reasonably priced. The meal will run you about $75-100 pp with tax and tip, depending on alcohol consumption. Sides are extra and they do add up of course. Thought the hangar was better than the filet. More flavor. I don't know, this place is standard Brighton. I'll probably like it more when I'm 20 years older. More...
While the location of this restaurant is not very appealing, just off Main Street and in a boring modern building, once you step inside you are transported to a place of beauty for all the senses. The interior design is impeccable. The excellent service starts the moment you walk in from the hostesss to the servers. The wine selection was very nice and reasonable and the food was better than most. My scallops were to die for and my husband raved about his salmon. It wasn't too quiet or too loud and it wasn't stuffy. Our server was so personable we didn't mind leaving a very generous tip. We look forward to returning very soon. Nice, romantic dinner. More...

By far the best steaks in town. I usually do my rounds between B&B, Rooney's and Max. Max is the best.

Wonderful experience this evening for our daughters 21st birthday! We could not be more grateful for such professional staff and excellent food! Thank You!

I have been here more times than I could count. I try something new (beef or chicken). Food is excellent and if you can get some wine do it.
We came here tonight for our 45" anniversary and we're blown àway. I had the steak and Niles had a Caesar salad and the loveliest pork chop we have ever seen. We ordered a Du Mol Syrah 2010 which has been described as "drop dead gorgeous" and it was. For dessert we had the warm and deep apple crisp with vanilla gelato. I am ready to celebrate again next week. 5 stars from us ***** More...
This is simply the best restaurant in Rochester. Both the food, and clientele are extremely elegant.
Most definitely the best Steakhouse in Rochester. Always a pleasant experience in an elegant yet cozy atmosphere.
Very good food and the service is exceptional. You must prepare yourself to take a doggy bag home.
Beyond incredible! Best restaurant in Rochester!
In all honesty I would have never known about this place. It's in a strip mall... We made reservations, it's a small place. It was a first time for all of us. It's warm and cozy Dark woods, lowered lighting. You can bring your own wine the corkage fee is $20 but worth it. The wine list is compact but pretty good. They bring over rolls with a homemade compound butter quite tasty. The rolls are a butter roll or one with Rosemary on it both tasty, too bad they were not warm. The fish/seafood is excellent the oysters are fresh and succulent. The special appetizer Smoked Shrimp Salad my friends had was just Wow! I had along with my friends BF we had the Steak Freits, Hanger Steak cooked to your liking, my GF had the filet with Truffle Butter.. That filet was so, so tender. My husband had the Sea Bass. Flakey and yum. Sides were the Roasted Carrots with Capers and Current's. Wow and we got the famous Mashed Potatoes get them.. The only issue was we ordered the Steak Tartar and it never came why?! No explanation, they did ask us if we still wanted it, but they were bringing us our Mains so we said no but took it off the bill. But still no reason why we did not get it? The husband wanted to try it, that's why he ordered it. Also the bus boy dropped my silverware on the table and it hit my water & wine glass and we were drinking red wine. Both kind of got on me, nothing major but we were at a four top table plenty of room but still plates and things were banged into? Maybe he needed a little more confidence or control or training. Hey things happen.. Also if possible get desert any of them.. When it came to desert no offer of coffee.. I had to ask, granted she comped me on that, but after the debacle with the silverware hitting my water& wine glasses and the lack of the one app my husband wanted and we brought our own wine, could you have comped us the corkage fee maybe?! Not being cheap but.... On to desert..The Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie the right amount of smooth and sweet. Get it even to go. Just cause it's in a strip mall does not mean it's bad, it's a hidden gem and they have parking. Give them a shot you will be glad you did. (One major issue.. Pacing of courses it was a bit rushed) not sure the HB will go back... I am willing for another shot. More...
I went here for the first time last month to celebrate me getting into grad school and let me tell you it was the best food decision I've made since moving to roc city. This place is amazing! It's expensive but it's worth every penny and honestly is not a lot more than you'd pay at a $$ steakhouse in rochester for sub par food. The service was great. Our waiter was a little awkward at first but really nice and attentive. He made suggestions throughout the meal that were extremely on par for what we wanted. We started with the shrimp cocktail for an app which was amazing as to be expected. For our meal, my girlfriend and I shared a large ceasar, the pomme frites, and an 11oz filet with the truffle butter sauce. Everything was SOOOO good. We would've tried the lobster Mac too but she is allergic. For dessert I had coffee and we shared the peanut butter pie. It was good but nothing to die for as we were still talking about the filet. If you haven't been here, you should definitely save it for a celebration dinner with those who love great food and great service. I will definitely be back!! More...
Great venue for the Jazz Festival. Experienced two programs on Sunsay for Jane Bunnett and her Cuban friends. The first program st 6:00PM was softer, jazzier. With a crowd eager to listen to participate. The soft Sun lights filtering and giving the scenario a soft glow. The program opened with a salute to Yemaya! After that, even if they didn't play anything else it would have been great. The second program, at 10:00PM was more Afro-Cuban in the beat and pace. As Gloria sings" the rythm is going to get you".Full bar and limited menu for the show available. Service excellent. More...

Fod is excellent. Everything is pricey, but you get more than what you pay for. When You enter a place that doesn't have any salt or pepper on the table and you find the food is spiced just right and you in fact don't need it, then you definitely don't feel like they overcharged you.
Steaks were perfect and the service was great. Everything is a la carte so it can get a bit pricey. You get what you pay for though and would go back in a second. Highly recommend...
I rarely eat Filet Mignon but when I do I wish it was always from here. Top notch 6oz Angus filet. I chose to get the Truffle Butter sauce on the side. My decision may or may not have been based on the fact that I am currently very into the Nicki Minaj song....either way, the steak was cooked perfectly, melted like butter in my mouth. All of the sides are portioned to share. Three of us split 2 sides - the pomme frits and the mushrooms. Both of these sides were also delicious. Downside, this place is very pricey (there was a Maserati parked outside). We had the peanut butter pie for dessert, to die for. The location is unsuspecting and it is small inside but it's all about the food. More...
I went here with with a group last week. No holds barred from start to finish. Two different types of oyster, jumbo shrimp cocktail, pig ear app, carpaccio, and cheese plate to start. Everything was excellent and the seafood was super fresh!!On to the entrees...one fish, two ribeyes, and one surf and turf. Minor mix up with the ribeye, but only required switching plate. Garlic frites, mashed potatoes, and brussell sprouts as sides. Again, all excellent, and perfectly cooked.Last, dessert. Olive oil cake, peanut butter pie, and chocolate mousse. We ordered all to go. But found out later, their desserts are excellent too.Sure it's in a strip mall, and you might miss it if you didn't know it was there. It's also pretty small inside, but I really enjoyed the ambience, and our server (Matt/Mark?) was great. We discussed possibly making a meal of ALL the appetizers next!! :) More...
We were taken here recently by some friends and we were blown away! We arrived early to get a drink at the bar. The bar had many fine Scotches and bourbons to choose from (I am a bourbon guy) and my companions were impressed with the wine list. The bartender was knowledgeable and friendly. Tje service in the restaurant was also knowledgeable and friendly as well as accommodating. All the meals arrived as ordered and cooked to perfection. Portions were large enough that I didn't even order dessert (a rare event for me!). This is definitely a place to go to celebrate a special occasion, impress a first date or just to go and get an amazing dinner. More...
I am writing this review based on the fact that after I dined here it was nothing but sweet dreams with visions of the Max Deluxe burger swirling in my head! We chose to dine at the chop house for the first time on a Sunday night. We ate at the bar and the service was no different than if we chose a table. The bartender was very attentive and the Manager Virgina, helped us chose an amazing wine. The mixed drinks we had after dinner were very well crafted as well. Between the Manager and the bartender there was never a want the entire evening. Both the water and wine glasses stayed full and the plates never lingered after we were finished eating. The Max deluxe burger was the entree chosen by two of the four guests in my party and it was cooked to perfection the frites, a perfect accompaniment! The oysters were as fresh as can be and the shrimp cocktail required a fork and knife they were so amazingly huge! The Steak tartar and the steak sandwich both also deserve mentioning since they both were as amazing as you would expect from a chophouse! 5 stars for service and 5 stars for food! Max's chop house and the staff left us with sweet dreams that will keep us coming back! More...
More of a surprise to find such quality steaks in a strip mall in Rochester.... Once we walked in my expectations were lowered, but by the end of the evening I realized we were in a great establishment and one worth visiting again. The evening was full of surprises... starting with the appetizers of oysters and seafood! Continuing with crispy fresh salads and exceptional steaks cooked perfectly to order. All cuts and sizes available! What a treat....The wine list was also a surprise, with great wines at reasonable prices filling the pages. Impressive. One item I mentioned to the waiter was the cold plate that the steak came on. It was distracting and did not let the temperature of the steak stay at a level I am accustomed to elsewhere. It was fine overall but the temperature could have been lifted a little. Worthwhile. Best steaks in Rochester. Everything is good right down to the sour dough rolls. Only downsides are that it's very pricey and everything including sides is a la carte. Plan on $100 per person but worth it for those special events. More...
I went here for the first time last night and it was a great time. As others have pointed out, the location is a little odd but do not let that factor into your judgment. I ordered my "go to" steak - filet mignon - medium rare and it was excellent. The waitress brought out one of each sauce - which was very considerate and a nice way to mix up the meal. My friend ordered the hanger steak and he was still craving it the next morning. The sides, which are a quintessential part to every steakhouse experience, delivered as well. We split three of them- mash potatoes, mushrooms and Brussel sprouts. The sprouts compared very favorably to other places I've been to in terms of consistency and spices. And you can never go wrong with adding some quality shittake (I think) mushrooms and creamy potatoes right? All quality steakhouses are pricey so one should go in with this expectation. In my view it's worth it. Pretty large wine selection, should be able to find something that will work for you. They also have a nice bar area which is fully stocked. More...

Amazing service and details to dishes! There are a lot of places that "try" to be high-end, but this place from service to food is definitely a dinner-type-of place. Excellent steak. Great service. Good sides.
I went here because of the good yelp reviews.... I should of known the price is like $75-100 each for dinner... ha But wow... their Dry Aged stake was awesome... also for some reason their french fries taste like they are healthy... I have no idea what they do.. The sides are big enough to share, so don't get two orders of the same, I got fries and my wife got mash patoes... both were great, but big portions.... We had a nice date night.... more of a special occassion type place, unless you are a high roller... Also, the outside kind of looks like a Dry Cleaning place... but the inside is nice... also not far to the bars on Alexander if you are going out drinking afterward...This is my fav restaurant in the Roc More...

Top notch. We went here for an anniversary. The choices were amazing. The food was cooked to perfection, and it's a very traditional steakhouse. The service was impeccable and the ambiance is perfect. All around a wonderful experience.Plan on spending some money if you visit this establishment, but it's worth the experience. More...
Made reservations for my brothers 21st birthday... man was it worth it. From the outside the place looks like a regular diner but the atmosphere inside provokes comfort and intimacy.Appetizers:Braised Octopus - Octopus was not tough and seasoned well. The toasted chick peas were a compliment. The overall mixture of ingredients made this an exciting dish to share.Maryland Style Crab Cake - Was cooked perfect and had great flavor. However, I did expect more from the Jalapeno aioli and do wonder if they had used fresh crab or canned. The dish was a bit small to share with more than two people.Hand Cut Steak Tartare - This was a treat. Again, the overall mixture of ingredients was perfect and made it a perfect finger food on top of crostinis.Dinner:Prime Ribeye (18 oz.) - While it was one of the most expensive steak's on the menu it was much cheaper than any of the steak's they were serving that night as specials. Three of us had order the Ribeye rare, the other black and blue (which is what I should have ordered), and we received exactly just that. Again, it was expensive but the cut and quality of meat was worth it. I would have been disappointed with the quality and most likely would not have bothered ordering a steak if we had gone to a restaurant of lesser scale to save some money. The steak's are served a la carte so we had also ordered sides (i.e., Mashed Potatoes, Caramelized Mushrooms & Onions, Mixed Greens, and French Fries w/ Parmesan and oil) all of which were family sized, enough for the four of us to evenly share.Service:Typically when the food is this good, I can become quite passive in regards to bad service. Only as long as it is timely and food is served at the correct temperatures. Though our waiter was excellent. Very knowledgeable about the different wines and pairings. Was able to adapt to our mood which can be at times obnoxious due to the intimacy of the place. Just overall inviting. For the occasion, Max Chop House was perfect. Looking forward to going back someday. Definitely want to try Max of Eastman soon. More...
Max Chophouse is definitely a triple when you put it in baseball terms. The unassuming strip plaza can lead you to believe that this is just your average diner, but once you enter you realize you are about dine in a tastefully decorated restaurant. Space is tight, but groups do fit. I have dined here with groups of 6, 8, and 15.Sides are plentiful and should be ordered to share. They rotate often and most are delicious. I have had a mac and cheese side that was a hit, another was amiss. Always ask about the specials, they are tantamount, but everyday a different one is thrown in. I believe that when I go to a steakhouse I order a filet mignon and that's it. I've never tried any other cut of beef at Max, because the Filet cuts like butter. Whether its the 6oz or the 11oz you wont be sorry. Don't get a sauce or if you do so, put it on the side, the steak doesn't need it.Prices are average for a steakhouse. If you believe steak should be $15, try Crapplebees, these prices are on par for what you would pay for excellent steak anywhere in Rochester. If you were in a large city a 6oz filet would be $50, not $30. Highly recommended, you wont be sorry! More...
Reading the rave reviews about Max's, I hoped it would live up to the hype when I suggested it as a last-minute location for my birthday dinner. I admit, the strip mall location off Monroe Ave. left me wondering... But once my date and I got inside, all of my fears evaporated. Simply put, this is the best steak I have ever had.The restaurant is smaller than I expected, separated into two dining areas. We were seated in the area with the bar, which had a bit of noise from the bar patrons. I think I would have preferred being seated in the rear.My date and I got right to business ordering drinks (note there is no draft beer here, only bottles, cocktails, and an extensive wine list). We quickly decided on the Prime Ribeye cooked medium, and also ordered sides of sauteed mushrooms and onions and a side of the mac and cheese we had heard so much about.Rolls soon arrived, and soon, our steaks. I did not order any of the side sauces, I prefer the cut of meat to stand on its own. The moment of truth revealed this to be the best goddamned steak I have had since I moved out of the NYC area a few years ago. Cooked to perfection and every bite tender and flavorful with no gristle to be found. Amazing. A bit of mushrooms and onion sent me to heaven with each bite. My date exclaimed that this was probably the best steak she ever had.I also enjoyed the mac and cheese, which had great subtle cheese flavors with the right amount of crunch. My date said it was good, but she would have preferred kit to be "cheesier." I was barely able to finish all of my steak, so the mac and cheese came home with me.I usually like to finish off a superb meal like that with a nice glass of California port or some other dessert wine, but I found the missing from the menu. Instead I capped off my meal with another beer. The prices are high, but I found the service and food to be worth every penny. Treat yourself to a little piece of meaty perfection for your next special occasion! More...
Had a great cowboy steak that was cooked to a perfect medium rare. The crust that was seared on the outside was perfectly seasoned and the steak sauce was really good. What could be better than this? A delicious dinner followed by a great concert. All 4 of us raved about outstanding dinner. My choice was the rarely seen, 0sso Bucco, any more. One the top 5 restaurants in Rochester, NY!
Highly recommend! The best steak house in town and the only place serve dry aged steak. Although it is sad that this is considered the best restaurant in Rottenchester NY.
When my husband told me he made a reservation to Max's, all I immediately thought was $$$!! Well, I wasn't wrong about that but it was so much more!! We walked in and immediately greeted by the host who took our coats. The dining room is so small and intimate, which I liked. We started off with the crab cakes for an appetizer, they were amazing and you could tell they were 100% fresh and handmade. The waitress then rattled off some of their specials which were all steaks -- we went for the Cowboy Ribeye to share (the steak alone was $80 but was big enough for 4 people, easy)! The sides were separate so we ordered mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. We did wait about 30 minutes for our meal but the waitress told us it would take that long due to how we ordered our steak, which I didn't mind waiting because I had wonderful company! The host brought out fresh warm rolls while we waited though! Our meal was amazing, the mac and cheese had so many flavors and cheeses and potatoes were creamy however, the steak could have been a little more done with the medium rare we ordered but no complaints!! We took 50% of it home to enjoy the next day. Upon leaving, the host even helped put my coat on - who says chivalry is dead?! I'd go back - once we can afford it again! More...
This date night was long overdue and what a perfect excuse for a well-deserved steak after weeks of packing, moving, cleaning, and unpacking. Truthfully, I was excited to get dressed up and feel like a real person again. No more takeout! The restaurant was quieter than I expected, perhaps because it was Labor Day weekend. It surprised me even more after I tasted the food and was shocked more people weren't flocking here for the goods. We ordered a bottle of red wine (Vina Rufina Alta Gama 1999) and started with the mussels. We attempted to refuse the sourdough and honey wheat bread they offered, but after the waitress reminded us how good it is dipped in the white wine broth, we caved to the carbs. Mind you, it was a spectacular pairing -- crusty sourdough softened by the rich buttery broth. I prefer mussels steamed in this manner with a white wine broth and topped with scallions. For my entree, I ordered the filet special which came with pan fried fingerling potatoes and swiss chard. The steak was served with a mushroom red wine sauce. It was so rich and flavorful, pulling in a hint of earthiness. I soaked up every last bite with that juice from the Gods -- one of my favorite steaks up to the day of my writing this review. P.S. the bf ordered the Ribeye and was jealous of my dish so opt for the special if you can. Although, his fries were amazing. I maybe ate half of them -- crispy, topped with thick grates of parmesean. Oh yeah!We had to finish our meal with dessert, but after stuffing ourselves we opted to share the chocolate molten cake with raspberry sorbet and a cappuccino. I wanted a few bites of chocolate to finish my wine and I got my fill with just that, but the raspberry sorbet was unreal! That's my kind of dessert. It's probably best that there was only a scoop on the plate because I would have overindulged otherwise. The service was wonderful -- classy, attentive, kind, and knowledgeable about every item on the menu. Can't wait to go back. More...
Amazing! Best fine dining restaurant in Rochester.
Best place for steaks in Rochester. I've been many, many times over the past few years and have enjoyed every visit. I no longer live in Rochester so I've only been to Max's a few times this year. Besides the food, the next best part about Max's is, or was our favorite waiter, Greg. I say is or was because the last time I was in town I made a reservation on a Friday night and requested to be seated in the back with Greg. To my surprise he was not there and we had a very new and inexperienced waitress. She was fine but not 5 star restaurant excellent. So, if anyone knows if Greg has moved on to a different place please let me know. My wife does not eat steak and it was great to have a waiter offer to have me call early in the week and request a certain type of fish, etc to be made for her so we could both enjoy a fantastic meal.If you love steak you should order one of the specials. I have tried them all and my favorite is the bone-in, dry-aged ribeye. Just a fantastic steak. As others have noted everything is a la carte. Oddly enough one of the best is the mac and cheese which is always different and only one with a heavily smoked cheese was not to my liking.Great wine selection. If you are with a group that is up for taking a chance they sometimes have some mystery wines that are excellent but of a variety they are no longer ordering. Pick red or white and you get an extraordinary wine for about $50. Overall, this is a great place. The specials are expensive but well worth it, especially if your date also enjoys steak and you can share one. If not you can make a pretty amazing Philly steak sandwich with what's leftover if you go for a big one on your own. From people I've gone with they report that the lobster, chicken, duck, etc is very good as well. More...

Eateries like this are part of what I like best about Roc.Very classy, impressive dining experience all for the same prices that you would pay for mediocre chain restaurants in a city like New York or Chicago. The setup here is a little peculiar in that it's located inside of Eastman and there are two dining rooms divided between an atrium. Reservations and seating were handled with ease. This is a great place for pre-RPO or other show dinner, and most of the other diners had their sunday best outfits on for that reason, so I'd ditch the jeans if I were you.Bread service was unique in that, a slice of freshly baked warm bread is served to you rather than being given a bread basket. At first I was like "stingy bastards" but the bread was soooo good I know I would have filled up on it if given a bountiful basket of it to nosh on.My caesar salad was prob the most unimpressive part of the meal; looked like iceberg lettuce but tasted ok. The pork chop I had was leaps and bounds above any I have had before. Sitting on top of a bed of spaetzle and shredded red cabbage, topped with apples, I damn near inhaled it. The specials seem to be focused on seafood however so I would have gotten some if I liked seafood. The entrees range from 25-35 bucks so this isn't everyday dining for guys like me, but certainly not prohibitively expensive, although with wine and drinks the bill can add up. Still I think the whole experience is a value. Great place to take a date you want to impress, parents in town etc. More...
I was wavering between 4 and 5 stars, but it was only because we sat at the table closest to the kitchen. This is a clear 5 star meal. We started out with warm, crusty bread and truffled butter. I couldn't get enough of it, it was delicious. The house pinot noir was smooth and rich, and it was the perfect accompaniment to both the escargot and steak tartare appetizers that my host and I ordered. My steak, a thick, well marbled ribeye, was cooked a perfect medium. I barely needed a knife as I sliced through it and gorged myself on a cut large enough to feed a family of three. When it was time to consider dessert, all I could muster was a faint grunt.I will, without a doubt, return. More...
Went for dinner before RPO..very prompt service.Great wine choice and the waiter helped make a selection.all five of us ordered salads which were fresh, well presented and dressing delicious and just the colorectal amt.I selected lamb chop the best I have eaten in recent years.dinner included dessert and coffee/tea was over in time for the show.Recommend a meal at Max More...
As long as you are prepared to spend your hard earned money, Max's will help you do so in delightful ways. Tuesday nights is a 3 course fixed price special with 4 types of wine included. No matter when you go, the Mac n Cheese is always worth trying. Sides are ala carte & delish! More...
Went here for a date night and was one the best meals I've had in a long time. Max's lived up to the hype, at least for me. I started with the escargot. I was hoping for the tradition presentation, which this was not, but still delicious. I then had the 6 oz filed with broccolini and mac and cheese of the day, while my boyfriend got the strip. This was one of the best filets I have had, and was better than the one I had during my last trip to Ruth's Chris. The only downside was the very loud patron at the table next to us, but not the fault of the restaurant. While quite pricey for Rochester, I thoroughly enjoyed it and would go back for a special occasion or out of town guests. More...
Great food. Staff is great, specially Ben the bartender who totally rocks. But it really sucks that they no longer carry the Parker House rolls. How hard could they be to find?
P. Adam Militello
This was probably the best steak I have had in Rochester. The Mac and Cheese (think real cheese with bacon and truffle yumminess) was fantastic, and the bartender was both creative and entertaining. I'll be returning.
Lives up to the hype. Max is known as one of Rochester's finest restaurants, and it delivered. I went with my wife. We started with oysters, which were served with 3 different sauces. All were very good. We each got fillet mignon, and both were cooked perfectly - tender, and bright pink in the middle. The rub that they used was a little salty, but this could have been a difference in taste or a small mistake. We were honest about it with the waiter and he offered to have new steaks prepared -- that would have been unnecessary. The sides were a good size and two to share were appropriate The wine list is divided into old world and new world for both red and white, and there are plenty of choices. We ordered a napa valley bottle and had it corked at the end of our meal, which was not a problem. BTW Tuesday is Booze-day, per our waiter. There is a prix fixe menu that includes all you can drink glasses of wine. Not bad at all. More...
Max of Eastman Place is the gold standard for Rochester dining. I have dined here many times and the service and food are consistently excellent. This past Thursday was no exception. Our recent visit found every table in the dining room and lounge occupied, and the place was running like a well-tuned machine. My two dining companions and I had dinner in the lounge. I like the lounge; it's a bit less formal and you can even feel comfortable having appetizers and a glass of wine at the bar. On this evening, service was as usual friendly and polished. We passed on appetizers and salad, but a small green salad with shaved Parmesan & red onion was brought to us, compliments of the house, which was a nice touch. For my entree, I chose duck breast with a Marsala mushroom au jus accompanied by wild rice and haricots verts. Absolutely delicious. Max serves nice wines by the glass; I had Pinot Noir which paired with my meal quite well. The pinnacle of the meal was dessert: panna cotta with a passion fruit coulis topped with fresh raspberries, blueberries and mint. It was beautifully presented and the flavors were exquisite. I like the atmosphere - formal yet eclectic - with comfortable, mismatched chairs and modern art. Soft, upbeat music plays in the background. A great dining experience. More...
Having heard a glowing recommendation from one of my trusted friends, I choose to make Max Chophouse the location for a special occasion dinner for my GF and I one cold Rochester evening. The restaurant definitely has an unassuming exterior (located in a small strip mall off of Monroe Ave) but the interior is welcoming if not a little bit dated.....don't let that scare you away though since the food and service were both top notch. We had a reservation, arrived early and were still promptly seated. Unfortunately for us we were seated next to a boisterous bordering on belligerent table housing a gentleman who was amongst the worst restaurant patrons I've ever seen or heard. Continuously rude and annoying to the waiter, he almost ruined a great experience for us. I can't blame that on the restaurant of course and the service made up for that in spades. I would go as far as saying it was the best service I've ever had. Our main waiter was engaging without being intrusive and easily read the mood of our table and joked around with us and was very informative when I asked questions about the food. Not a ton to say about the food other than it met all of our wishes with some minor quibbles here and there (some due to our selections and not the actual product served to us). We had the steak tartare (our first time) which we enjoyed a great deal. There was a dry aged Kansas City bone in strip special and flavour was definitely worth the extra few bucks. I can't get enough of dry aged! We also split a burger, which like the steak, was perfectly cooked to our order. I wouldn't say the the accoutrements to the steak and burger (sauces etc) were noteworthy but that is a minor issue to me as I care much more about the base product.Definitely recommended for a nice dinner out in a classic steakhouse environment and for people looking for phenomenal service and a solid dining experience. Coming from the DC area, I was looking for a "sophisticated", yet comfortable restaurant to spend time and have good food with. Seems all restaurants in Rochester have gone the way of the Bistro. I have been away for over 20 years and miss the old classics of Alexander Street. I was very pleased to find this restaurant and its' charming size with out being crowded. Service was attentive and not overbearing. The food was all fresh and noted as fresh and local, but server could not tell me where the meat came from. I trust that they follow through with their locavore claims. I felt pricing was good value and not shocked, but I come from a more Metro area. We had a very pleasant time and I would return. Have nothing bad to say about this place. Thanks for making our evening special. More...
Best Restaurant in Rochester!. Hands down the best restaurant in Rochester! I've eaten at all the top steak houses in the major cites and this place is as good or better!
A few forewarnings-- the $$$ means, yes, don't get stickshock when you see the menu. Steaks come a la carte, and then you can get sides, well, on the side, a la carte. Also, the restaurant is very small, so make sure to get your reservations in ahead of time. This is the best steak i've had in Rochester-- hands down. It was cooked perfect, and the filet was indeed a filet. There were no fatty remnants or tendon grissle pieces. The decor is rather interesting (as is the location) but you come here to eat and spend time with the people with you... not to stare at the wall and make judgement on the choice of decor.Ordered the filet, the 6oz, with their truffle butter (huge fan of truffle taste) and since I was with a group (of 5), we ordered a bunch of sides (which came in healthy portions) including the mashed potatoes, pomme frites, mac and cheese, and brussel sprouts. All were great. The beet salad was tasty to start off. And everyone was happy with desert- most noteably the peanut butter pie.Their wine list was fairly lengthy.... nothing special to note.I would highly recommend this place for a good steak dinner. If you didnt know it was here, you would never find it. The best things in life usually are!
Max is fantastic! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and while the all-white deer and antelope heads on the wall may not be for everyone, I think they add a cool, modern-safari feel. The food is amazing. My boyfriend and I had a reservation, but they were running behind, so we were given a complementary shrimp cocktail with the most gargantuan shrimp I've ever eaten. The seasonal local apricot salad with a goat cheese-stuffed squash blossom was delicious, and the Malbec we ordered went great with the steak. We split creme brulee and chocolate pot-de-creme and I still can't figure out which was better.Overall, super delicious but super expensive. But worth it. More...
Best we've had in Roc so far.We started with gnocchi and beet salad. The gnocchi was soft and sort of melted in your mouth but had just enough substance. It was prepared with cheese, prosciutto, and truffle butter. The dish was pleasantly light and all of the flavors mixed well. The beet salad had refreshing interesting flavors, but they didn't really come together. It was prepared with pickled blueberries, goat cheese, and mint. The mint was amazingly fresh and would make the dish worth ordering again for me. For dinner I had the Pork chop, which was larger than expected, it had a spicy, chiavetta's type sauce. and came with a nice vegetable mix - great summer dish. My wife had the halibut special, which was the winner for the night - it was served over truffles and fennel. All the flavors combined in every bite. We'd definitely get this special again. We had molten chocolate lava cake with sour cherry gelato. The cake was not gooey enough in the center but the gelato was very good.Alex N gave a good description of the dining room and atrium. More...
What about local goods?. Had a very tasty meal. But very disappointed in the lack of local foods. I was told on the phone, there would be organic grass fed beef from Minnesota available. WOW, that's a lot of petro used to get the meat here. However, when we got there, waiter said, no organic or grass fed available. No organic or local meats? Same with beers, veg's etc. In the end, the meal was very good, but it cost not only a lot of cash (it was worth it for a special night out), but, the real cost was to the environment (lots of fuel for trucks and planes to bring the food to town) and our amazing local and upstate farmers and brewers get left out of the picture. We live in NYC and travel to Rochester to visit family. When in town, we always do our best to sample what the city and region has to offer beyond Wegmans, Bowling and Garbage Plates. Max of Eastman Place is Rochester's best example of New American we've found. We've been there a couple times and been pleasantly surprised at the inventiveness of the chef. It's a bit pricey and formal, but well worth it for a special evening or for someone craving something a little more original. More...
This restaurant is in a fairly nondescript lot on Monroe Ave. There is limited parking in the front but I here there is more in the rear. My husband and I had heard amazing things about their steak so we decided to check it out for his birthday. When we walked in, we were surprised to see how tiny the place was for how well-known it is throughout Rochester. The atmosphere is off casual elegance where it was okay to be dressed up or to be more work casual. None of the staff were pretentious at all. The menu had some very interesting appetizers and had more variety than just steak entrees on its menus. We had the tostadas which were fantastic. An artisanal clab of bacon grilled to perfection with a salad and toasted baguette w/ 2 amazing sauces which was beautifully presented. Several other appetizers looked very appealing but we wanted to save room for our entrees. I had the steak frites and my husband had a NY strip steak. Mine came out, again beautifully presented, with a fantastic sauce over the fries that I could not figure out what was in it. My steak slices was cooked exactly as I had asked. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his strip steak. We had glasses of wine which were reasonably priced and were different than what's is usually on convential Rochester menus. I think they switch their wines frequently because their wines by the glass were told to us by our waiter and were not on the menu. My husband and I were pleasantly surprised that we were not completely filled up after the appetizer and could still enjoy our meals. We had a wonderful vanilla creme brulee at the end of out meal as well. The food is definitely not soaked in butter or other fattening liquids because we walked out feeling stuffed but not overly so which was perfect and different than most other steak places in Rochester. We are definitely going back to sit at their bar area and have more of their appetizers and drinks! More...
Really enjoyed my recent dining experience here during a Tuesday night! It was the $39 prix fixe 3-course menu with unlimited wine...no brainer to choose this option for a Tuesday. The plaza is a bit hard to find, but once you walk inside it's a fabulous, intimate environment. We enjoyed the 2 white wines (4 glasses, thanks quick-to-pour server!), tuna spring rolls, a salad (a bit heavy on the radishes) and panko crusted catfish with sweet potato fries. All delicious! It was also a great way to sample some new fare I might not have if not for the prix fixe option. Will definitely return! More...
Max Chophouse is in a hard to notice location. There is limited parking in front, but more parking in the rear. Upon entering the front door, I was taken aback by the small size of the entire restaurant, but it was cozy, elegant, and perfect. Judging by the other patrons, it was almost like walking into an exclusive country club as its patrons were all well dressed and probably wealthy. It is easy to see why 'the beautiful people' come here. I was one of four and one of my companions brought his own wine. The corkage fee is $15, but they will waive the fee if you purchase a bottle. I was surpirsed at how knowledgeable our server was regarding wines, asking if we wanted to decant a bottle. While we didn't order any wine from the restaurant, I did peruse the menu and was quite satisfied with the offerings and pricing with a range of options, including Finger Lakes, and a few bottles for less than $30 for the more budget conscious. For the meal, I started with the soup of the day, a lamb stew served with two fat slices of homemade bread that was made with club soda. This made the bread fizzle a tiny amount when you put it in your mouth. The bread and soup were excellent. Of course, for my first time here, I had to have a good cut of meat. There are only 5 options, not including any specials. I had the filet mignon, 11oz for $41, it was cooked to perfection at medium rare. I probably should have had the 6oz for $27, as it was almost too much food with everything else. My companions had the NY strip steak, which they raved about. When you order a steak at Max's, there are five steak sauces that are included. Each sauce changed the dynamics of each bites, only in a good way. For sides, we ordered collectively, the frites, the mashed potatoes, a gourmet mac&cheese, caramelized brussel sprouts (amazing), and spicy ginger green beans (different, spicy, and good). This was too much food for four men as we couldn't finish everything. We couldn't even comprehend consuming any desert. To sum up, Max's has excellent food, attentive service, and a cozy, elegant atmosphere. I will certainly be back. More...
Great steaks. Really enjoyed our dinner at Max's. Table of four, and we had Porterhouse, KC Strip and my wife had a burger. Everything was fantastic, the Porterhouse melted in my mouth. A very extensive wine list with some great selections. Excellent for business or night out with friends and family. More...
Nice restaurant but not as good as I expected. The service was a bit slow even though it is a small place. I had the mahi mahi which was well made but nothing special. My wife had the chicken which was surprisingly good. Very well made. The atmosphere really depends on who's sitting at the next table. We ended up beside some chatty folks and it was extremely annoying. So if you're looking for an intimate evening, this isn't the place. The crowd there was a good bit older so if you're looking for younger people try Good Luck or Lento.Overall a good restaurant but there's much better places in Rochester. One of the best in Rochester. My girlfriend and I went for an early Valentine's/Anniversary dinner. I found the entrance a bit awkward, as it is located in the Eastman School. They basically own the entire right side of the building. It looked like you can host large parties in the atrium, lounge in the bar, or have dinner in the dining room (both separated by the atrium). The dining area is a bit small, so make sure you make reservations, no matter which day it is.I found the staff very personable, even when this is probably one of the most expensive places in Rochester. We shared the beef tartare and the baked oysters. The tartare, while good, was nothing special and the oysters came in an odd number (5) which was not exactly a good split, but tasted fantastic. We (again.. i think we always order the same thing) had the salmon and lamb. My lamb was the shank rather than the chop (as listed). However, this did not make the meal any less perfect. I cannot attest to the salmon as I was not able to taste (she must have thought it was too good share!).The most memorable part of the meal was the dessert, which I never would have thought was the strength of this restaurant. It was a crepe filled with a kumquat gelee, among other ingredients, which for Rochester is completely original. Also noted, Chef Tony likes to schmooze with the clientele when dinner service starts to wind down. He is a great guy and I'm sure he could be successful outside of Rochester (even though he seems dedicated to this city). The place could use a sommelier, but I really wasn't here for the wine. I give it a 5 for being among the best in Rochester. After all it is all relative. More...
Great ambiance with the low lighting. Perfect for date night or business meal. Food is outstanding
We just had our wedding reception at Max this past weekend and we couldn't be any happier with how it turned out. My fiance wanted a reception site with great food and was looking for something different than the typical reception fare. Max offers a wine pairing option with a tasting menu instead of a traditional menu. We were able to offer our guests a different wine with each course that included foods such as scallops, filet, and thai chicken salad. Many guests told us that this was the best food they had ever had at a reception. We were so pleased to be able to offer our guests a wonderful culinary experience. The service was also excellent. Dana the event coordinator, made sure that everything was running smoothly and to our liking. She went the extra mile to make sure we were happy. The location is also beautiful at night with the white lights from the Eastman Theater shining through the large windows of Max. It's a beautiful urban location. It was perfect for our Christmas themed wedding. I would highly recommend Max for a unique wedding experience that your guests will love. More...
Food is fantastic. Service is knowledgable, attentive, professional. Atmosphere is very nice. Pricey, but nice for a special occasion.
What great atmosphere and decor. The food was amazing and the service was awesome. I enjoyed the wine list and the attention to detail that the staff had. The were like mind readers and had great suggestions. Definitely a great place to go for a celebration as it is a bit pricey but well worth it. The valet parking is a plus! More...
