How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
This depends on the type of construction used and the available headroom. Generally a garage constructed with a single brick skin can be converted by dry-lining or building a new inner leaf. Insulation will need to be added to the cavity and the ceiling , roof and floor to make it into a habitable space.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
The first part of the job is to build the first course of the inner leaf and then damproof the floor with a new 1200 DPM add insulation and screed. Any piped devices will be installed at this point too.The inner leaf would need to be constructed and tied to the existing masonry with wall ties. Once the wall are complete a new ceiling will need to be constructed and insulated at the ceiling level.
The first fix electric will take place next and once this complete the walls ans ceiling would be plastered. Once the plastering is complete then the second fix electrics would take place. Then at this point the job would be ready for installing skirting, architraves and decoration.
