Liam is a brilliant personal trainer who is incredibly inspiring. He really pushes you, makes you believe in yourself and brings fun into every workout. He is perfect for a beginner who has never stepped foot in a gym to someone more advanced looking to sharpen their workout techniques. He is a genuine soul, and booking Liam has been one of the best decisions I have made. More...

I've just finished a 6 week / 12 session bootcamp with Liam and the results are great. Lost some timber (1 stone) - tried to follow the meal plan Liam created for me (it would appear my will power also needs some training). Major changes have been fitness has increased loads and recovery times after sessions have come down significantly. Sessions are always varied, interesting and challenging...just signed on for the next 6 week bootcamp! More...

I started with the early morning bootcamp for a few reasons - I'd got out of the habit of the gym or a run in an evening after a day's work and I knew I was also developing low self esteem, so bad eating & drinking habits followed - so that needed to change. Even though I wasn't totally unfit, I knew the sessions would be a challenge (but also knew that Liam could advise how to adapt some of the exercises too). I started the first few sessions with a bad back (poor core) and my knees have always been a weak point, but by session 4 the bad back had gone (replaced by the start of a 6 pack - hopefully)!!! The location and way the bootcamp works is great - everyone works on their own personal fitness, but supports each other too - along with great encouragement from Liam. It's still 2 sessions from the end so I've not done the final weigh-in or measurements yet - but I know I've lost nearly a stone and more importantly, my body shape is changing (dropped 2 belt holes) and now have a much stronger core. It's also helped me to think about what I eat and drink more, so my diet is more healthy too. I would definitely recommend training with Liam - sweating at 6:30am is almost fun!!! More...

I trained with Liam some years ago, his teaching and coaching were informative, encouraging and fun. The work outs were challenging with lots of technical moves which Liam would dissect to ensure I got each move right. Apparently Liam has been heavy swinging for a fair few years now. More...

Q&As

For me the relationship I have with my clients is the key to success. I need to understand them completely, what they are hoping to achieve, what their current lifestyle is like, their likes, dislikes and what motivates them. Every plan or program I create is specific to the client and is constantly evolving. Each training session is planned around a clients performance at previous sessions and will always take into account any injuries or dangers whilst still pushing them to perform at their absolute best and to get the most out of each session.

Consistency is the not very well hidden secret to getting the body of your dreams! Whether it be with your diet or training (neither will get you the body of your dreams alone) you need to be consistent in every aspect of your life. Training needs to be scheduled in with the high importance you’d give to a meeting with a big client at work, whatever happens you need to train at the planned, scheduled time if at all possible. Stick to the program and listen to your trainer, some days you’ll be more enthusiastic than on others and that is absolutely normal, just get your head down and get it done!

Your diet and eating should be planned in advance, ideally negating the need to ever grab something on the go. Plan or pre prepare the meals you’re intending on having at home or have the ingredients in stock and ready to go. Lunches for work should be pre prepared the evening before or as many people do, prepared in large batches on a Sunday evening in quantities to cover the full week. Keep hydrated, make sure there’s a bottle of water to hand wherever you may be sat, in your car, at your desk, next to the sofa etc and get into the habit of taking a drink periodically whatever you’re doing.

And finally, sleep! Again you need consistent, undisturbed sleep. Create the habit of going to bed and getting up at the same time every day and make sure your bedroom is conducive to good sleep. Is the temperature right, not too warm or cold? Is the room dark and will it stop unexpected light getting in? Are you really ready for sleep, not still playing on your phone or scrolling through pages of mindless posts? Getting into the habit of getting a good nights sleep will show much greater benefits and do more towards getting the body of your dreams than you’d ever imagine.

There’s many things I love about my job, but the main and I imagine obvious one is the huge pride and satisfaction I get from seeing the achievements of my clients. Seeing their confidence soar and watching them achieve things they never thought possible, listening as they tell me how their increased health and fitness has impacted on every aspect of their and their families lives. That’s what really makes it all worthwhile.

I was inspired to start my own business after spending a lot of time training in mainstream gyms and speaking to people in gyms or at sporting events. By listening to their stories I learnt to understand their motivations as well as some of the things which they see as barriers or obstructions to achieving their goals. I then realised that there was an opportunity for someone with a lot of years fitness training experience behind them and who had already faced and overcome most of the hurdles that people were facing, to use that knowledge and experience to help others. It was a bit cliched admittedly but I believed that if I could overcome the obstacles that life throws our way and still train for, complete or compete in the many events I have so far then I could also pass that knowledge onto others.

My training and coaching style is very different to many other personal trainers and for that I make no apologies! All personal trainers have to complete the same basic academic training regardless of their fitness history, ability or experience however what makes me different to the majority is my life experience, achievements and success as a participant and competitor in multiple, wildly varying disciplines of fitness competition and training. Of course with over ten years of personal training behind me already I also have a wealth of experience of training people from all walks of life, of all ages and with differing levels of fitness and goals.

Personally I believe that although all personal trainers will have (or should have) completed a recognised PT qualification with a reputable training provider including at least the Level Two Gym Instructor and the Level Three Personal Trainer certifications, clients will always get the most from training with a coach that they feel comfortable with or that they can relate to. The vast majority of personal trainers however are quite young and many go into it straight from school or college, or after working a short time as a gym assistant in one of the big brand gyms. Although they may have the technical know how gained from completing their fitness certifications, they will of course be limited as to the breadth of their knowledge and experience by their age.

For info I first qualified with The Australian Institute of Fitness (now The European Institute of Fitness) in 2007. My course was split between classroom study in the UK and a practical study week/workshop in Javea, Spain.

My clients come to me because they feel comfortable, and as I am a little older (m43) than most other trainers they feel that I can empathise with the difficulties that may come up with embarking on a fitness or training regime, both in terms of the physical demands on the body as well as the inescapable time pressures that come with a modern day family and working life. Clients appreciate my personal fitness and sporting achievements and can therefore see that anything is achievable if you really put your mind to it.

Training with me is a long way from easy and I will push you close to your limit in every session, I believe in always giving 100% and getting the most out of every time we train. Yes it’s hard going but eventually you’ll get used to the aches and pains that’ll creep up on you! Most importantly though you’ll quickly see and feel progress, you’ll notice how every day life and moving around starts getting a little easier day by day, you’ll wake up every morning with increased energy and if your goal is to lose weight you’ll quickly see and feel the difference in the way your clothes fit! People will comment on how healthy, motivated and energized you look.

As your fitness level and ability improves we may introduce different forms and styles of training yet you can always be assured that every set or exercise we do, although sometimes exceedingly difficult or strenuous, will have been planned to a level that is right and most importantly safe for you.

Whatever your goals are relating to your health and fitness, whether it’s simply to get fitter and lose a bit of weight, to train for a specific sporting event maybe race for life, tough mudder or other charity event, then I have the expertise, knowledge and experience to get you there!

Maybe you’re wanting to get into shape and look your best for a special event, a holiday, wedding, or family or school reunion? Whatever your goal I can get you there! All it takes is consistency and dedication....

Services

Personal training with me here at Yorkshire Kettlebell Club is very different to training in public or corporate gyms! Firstly Yorkshire Kettlebell Club is a private gym, whenever you book a personal training session with me here you will have the entire gym to yourself. For many people booking a personal trainer for the first time, the thought of being in a large public gym surrounded by people watching can be very off-putting and most people are quite nervous when they are starting a training program, particularly if they have never trained before. Knowing that there will be no one else in the gym can make those first few sessions considerably easier.

I've been a coach now for more than 15 years and have worked in both public and corporate gyms as well as my own gym and studio. What I've found over the years is that the results my clients achieve are often better when they train in a private facility and are not feeling self conscious about making mistakes or being watched by other gym goers. Clients tend to be more comfortable trying new techniques or pushing themselves that little bit harder when they have the security of being the only ones in the gym.

Although the majority of my clients nowadays are aged between 30 and 55 and I have slightly more female than male, they all have their own specific reasons for wanting to train with me along with their own personal goals. Most of my clients have work or family commitments that have derailed their previous attempts at losing weight and getting fitter although a good few have never trained consistently at all. Equally I have some clients who have been training for years but aren't getting the results they expected or feel they deserve along with others who are training for specific events or to improve their performance at other sports. No two clients are the same and therefore there's no off the shelf program, everyone's training style and plan evolves as they develop.

Diet and Nutrition

All training plans need to be backed up with a good diet. Although it is possible to get results without paying too much attention to your diet, its hard work and your results will be severely restricted. Again as most of my clients have work or family commitments its just not feasible to have too strict a diet and instead we put together an individual plan that fits with their particular lifestyle, others prefer a more regimented meal by meal approach and for those I have a range of different diet plans available dependent on their calorie/nutrition requirement.

Booking Your First Session

Your first training session and consultation with me at Yorkshire Kettlebell Club is always completely free of charge with no commitment. This first session gives me a chance to go over your goals and expectations and to see how you move including any injuries or other obstacles. It also gives you a chance to meet me, to see the gym and to ask any questions you may have. The relationship between trainer and client is important and you both need to feel comfortable if you are to get optimum results. I take bookings from 8am Monday to Friday and often work into the evening so I will always try my best to find a session time convenient for all.

Although Yorkshire Kettlebell Club is primarily for personal training, we do still hold regular small group sessions in the gym.

Pre lockdown we used to hold large Yorkshire Bootcamps circuit training sessions in our sports hall, however after 3 lockdowns and with the ongoing uncertainty we have decided to stop all large group sessions and instead hold smaller Yorkshire Bootcamps sessions in our gym.

Yorkshire Bootcamps are now held on:
Monday and Friday at 9.30am and Tuesday and Thursday at 6.30pm.

Yorkshire Bootcamps is still set out the same as the larger sessions were with a mixture of strength and cardio exercise laid out in stations and run in an interval training format. Being held in the gym instead of the sports hall though means we have access to even more equipment and that we can ensure that everything is thoroughly cleaned each time its used.

Yorkshire Bootcamps is a very mixed ability session, you need no prior experience or fitness level to attend and all exercises have easier or more difficult options available. Of course being in the gym instead of the sports hall means that numbers have to be reduced and sessions do tend to get booked up very quickly, if you'd like to join our Yorkshire Bootcamps sessions then please contact me at info@liamobrien.co.uk to check whether there are spaces available. If there are spaces available then you are more than welcome to join us free of charge for a first session.

We also hold dedicated strength training or strongman sessions under the Angry Vegan Lifting Club banner.

Angry Vegan sessions are held on:
Monday and Wednesday at 6.30pm and Saturday at 10.30am.

Our Angry Vegan strength sessions can be tough! If you've not trained before then you may find some of the exercises too much, however we have equal numbers of men and women on these sessions. The sessions are again laid out in a circuit format although this time the exercises will be a mixture of traditional strongman exercises or events, and powerlifting or old school strength techniques.

As with our bootcamps if you'd like to give one of our Angry Vegan sessions a go then please email me at info@liamobrien.co.uk.
