What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
There are really three components to great photography. One is connecting with the subject in a way which enables the camera to capture character and / or mood. This relies most heavily on the personality of the photographer. The second component is posing. Good posing will complement the subject while little or no input from the photographer on your pose can lead to a dull or unflattering image. Remember, when you are in front of the camera you can't be sure if your pose makes for a good image or not. In that regard your photographer is your coach, and professional photographers are more likely to provide good coaching. Third, but not least, is lighting. Lighting, and to an equal degree shadows, is what adds dimension, drama, interest, etc. to our images.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
This depends very highly upon the subject and situation. The questions I would ask of a wedding client are markedly different from those I would ask of a high school Senior for their portrait. And in all cases those questions will be intended to determine the goal of the images. A basic question for a wedding is whether they want a more documentary, creative or traditional (posed) approach. With head shots, questions will revolve around the intended audience of the images. Actors and realtors both need head shots, but the posing and lighting will usually be different.
What do you love most about your job?
In general, working with folks. Getting to know them and delivering to them something of value to them personally. Being able to inspire increased self confidence or bring a tear to the eye is the ultimate dividend.
What inspired you to start your own business?
The desire to explore my own creativity and see first hand the benefit to others.
Why should our clients choose you?
It's all about the experience. I endeavor to provide an experience which rewards both of us on a personal basis, in addition to producing images which represent a good value.
