I've been canoeing and kayaking since the late 1980s, and due to the enjoyment I get through exploring new places during my adventures in paddlesport and socialising with other paddlers i'm still paddling today.
In 1995 I started coaching and have progressed through the coaching scheme to now become qualified as a level 4 lifeguard coach and level 3 sea & inland coach, FSRT & Touring Award Training provider and First Aid Trainer.
I have worked on the BCU Lifeguards national commitee for several years as the national trainnig officer for the BCU Lifeguards, and have worked and still work for many of the outdoor education centres local to me introducing, by training others this enables me to pass on my enthusiasm and skills sharing in the enjoyment of the sport I love.
I further developed my trainer qualifications and became qualified as an RYA Powerboat and Safety Boat Instructor, RLSS Lifesaving, water safety and Pool Lifeguard Trainer Assessor and HSE, aquatic and outdoor first aid trainer.
I have completed kayak and canoe training with John, and he has coached my daughters too. He is not only a really nice guy, but has a great way of explaining and demonstrating. Highly recommended.
I have known & worked with John for many years through beach/ pool lifeguarding, & more especially his skills as a powerboat t/a. He teaches with a laid back attitude, that would lead you to believe that your not even learning just having lots of fun, yet he continues to easily gets his students to the required standards in all areas that I have seen him working More...
I've know John as a paddler since first moving to the area around 10 years ago and throughout that time he has been supportive in encouraging my skills development in kayaking and canoeing.
He coached my sea kayaking skills to 4 star level from being a novice and has provided a firm knowledgable and encouraging atmosphere on all the many sessions we have shared.
John has also encouraged my open canoe skills infecting me with his clear love of the activity of canoeing and with his wide skill set has also played a significant part in raising me from a novice in white water kayaking to a 3 star level. His risk assessment of environments and situations has also given me an insight into identifying issues that may be of concern.
John's style of guiding and encouraging paddlers to think for themselves is itself a skill to emulate. :-)
Very experienced instructor help me with my technique greatly
I've used John as an external assessor, adding candidates we'd trained for Lifeguard and Assistant lifeguard qualifications.
John's approach was professional and easy to work with. He challenged the students to perform their skill set in a sensible assessment, within the syllabus yet stretching enough to see how they would perform.
I will be using the services of John again in the near future.
I went paddling with John a couple of years ago, in an area of coast with which I was unfamiliar. My kayaking previously had always been in general purpose or whitewater boats.
John lent me a sea-kayak, and helped me get to grips with it. He was extremely helpful and friendly, and a good guide to the coastline - even happened to know what the birds around us were. Even though I was in his boat, he encouraging me to try it out in and around the rocks, where I might easily have scuffed it. He managed the group well too.
Awesome instruction from John, very knowledgeable and patient. Would highly recommend to anyone.
