I'm a member of a Gold's Gym in a different city, but when I travel to San Antonio for work, I always stay at the hotel next door so I can come work out here. I like the overall layout of the gym, and the fact that it's 2 stories. Plenty of space to workout! I usually workout in the early mornings (before 7am), and the gym isn't too terribly crowded. Some of the equipment is a little outdated and the gym can be a little dirty at times, but I always get a good workout when I go. Would love to see them bring back the 5:15am GoldsBurn class. Will be back for sure! More...

This location offers the best studio, in my opinion.  I find all the natural light pouring through the huge windows to be very energizing.  The windows are behind you, so when the class begins, there is no sun glare or outside distractions. Just a warm glow inside.I discovered an awesome Step instructor here, Diane.  She provides clear, precise directions, which are easy for any fitness level to follow.  I really enjoy her weekend class. I'm always leery about joining gyms, but extremely happy about Gold's Gym. The staff is super friendly and very helpful. There's a lot of groups classes for those who need a little motivation. For those who like to tone out everything around you there's the theatre room. Get on the treadmill, bike or stair climber and watch a movie. I love it!The pool is open for use as long as there's no aquatic classes going on. Give them a try. You won't regret it. More...

I will say up-front that I am writing this from the perspective of a weightlifter that uses free weights and cables almost exclusively. I'm also highly experienced (one month away from getting my NASM!) so I don't use any of the personal training services. I don't do cardio at this gym (except for the occasional GRIT or BodyAttack class) and I don't ever touch most of the weight machines. I also don't have kids (so no kids club), and my schedule allows me to work out during non-peak hours (mid-morning, mid-afternoon, late evening). That said, I can't understand why this location gets so much hate. It's the nicest gold-level club in San Antonio that I've been to (and I've been to over half of them). Let's all keep in mind everything you're getting here for, like, $40/mo (which for an avid exerciser like me means I'm only paying about a dollar an hour, maybe even less). It's not SPOTLESS, but it's clean--maybe not as clean as LifeTime, but just as clean as the black-level Golds clubs. The women's locker room is always tidy and comfortable, and aside from a stray hair here and there in a shower stall (which is just to be expected in a public shower), I've never seen anything gross. It's not HUGE, but I've never had to wait for equipment unless I'm dumb enough to try to go during peak hours--and at that point, I'd be waiting at any gym. The trainers and staff are cool, but they're not waitstaff the way some are at more expensive gyms--if a spray bottle or paper towel machine is empty, or if a restroom needs attention, you just gotta let them know. I mean, you're paying $40/mo, not $100/mo--the gym doesn't make enough money to keep so many people on staff to make sure everything is perfect all the time.I love that it has the most squat/power racks of any Gold's I've been to--maybe I've been lucky, but I have never had to wait more than a couple minutes for one (at other locations sometimes I end up not being able to squat at all the entire hour and a half I'm there because a dozen people are trying to use, like, two and a half racks). I have personally never had issues with equipment being broken, out of order, or too old to use--if I see a maintenance sign on a machine one day, it's usually gone the next day or the day after that and the machine is either replaced or functional. I also love that it offers a wide variety and an all-day schedule of classes that are included in the membership price--some Gold's seem to schedule 80% GoldsFit or GoldsBurn classes (which cost extra) and almost no good Les Mills/Yoga/etc. classes. This gym offers those programs that you have to pay extra for if you want them, but there are so many other classes that you really get your money's worth with just the basic membership alone. The merch and supplement area is always well-stocked and there are tables to chill at if you're a person like me who lifts, then waits half an hour or so before a yoga/cardio class. There's a small athletic training area with astro turf, a sled, tires, boxes, and all that other fun functional-fitness jazz. And the gym is an open two-story blueprint so it has those nice high ceilings that make you feel less cramped and hot even when it's busy. Gotta love all the natural light that lets in, too.So why not 5 stars? Two reasons. I wish they had longer hours on the weekends (8pm is just way too early for the gym to close, ever). And, the clientele aren't always the greatest. There are, unfortunately, a lot of members who grunt, don't put their weights back, don't wipe down their equipment, and stare at/hit on me. I know this is beyond the control of the gym's staff, but ambiance and community are important for a gym, and this gym doesn't really have that for me (one of the reasons I try to go when it's emptier). This is my favorite location for the following reasons:-the front desk is friendly. Unfortunately, I can't say that about some of the trainers. But the front desk people are very attentive. -clean environment. I always see workers cleaning and people at this location have a good habit of cleaning after themselves. -Pool is great! (Which I use a lot) and jacuzzi too. -women have their own Sauna room. -they just added new machines. I've never seen a machine not be fixed for more than a few days. They are pretty quick. -classes are fun and welcoming. (I love love love the RPM class. I've had all the instructors and they are amazing) -I feel very comfortable in this gym. I've never had any problem with a guy at this location. Ever. They are very friendly for the most part. I usually go mornings too, there aren't that many people, I can use the studio and it's all to myself and my favorite part about going in the morning is the older people there. Been going here for a few years and in past few months spending up to two hours a day here five days a week on average. The customers are very serious about working out. There isn't a lot of socializing going on. Everyone is in there to make changes or improve on their current fitness level. No hard sell for anything. Absolutely love this gym! It's about a 5 minute drive from my house making it ideal for both me and my husband even though we visit the gym at completely different times. I like to go around 10 am and it's typically easy for me to get to the machines/areas that I need to. The staff is always super nice as well. I met with a trainer once and whenever she sees me she says hello and checks in to make sure I'm doing okay with what we had planned out. My only complaint is that the gym doesn't offer yoga more. I have to go to the one on Bandera to get in my weekly sessions since Culebra only offers it on Mondays at a time that doesn't work for me. However this is the absolute nicest Golds in San Antonio! Still love this gym!Just a question to management; is there anyway to update the class schedule online (or place sign on door) when a class has a sub?  I would totally reference that before heading that way.  All your instructors are good but some match a client's fitness level/skills better. For example: some instructors have easy/repetitive Zumba choreography, others have spins and tweaks that my back prefers to refrain from performing.  Sure, I can modify the advance/new steps, but that interrupts my workout goals for the class.  Over time, I have found classes and instructors that match my needs.  I adjust my schedule to their schedule.  If I knew there was a sub, I would adjust class attendance/class choice accordingly.   As far as body pump goes, cueing is very important.  Some instructors are just much better than others in this department. I know it's not all about me; this is only a customer service thought.... More...

It makes my cardio time go by so much faster, so long as the movie isn't boring and it is usually something enjoyable/action-packed.I do wish the prices were a little cheaper for the classes, which cost extra in addition to the regular membership. I would get in on those spin and "Gold's Fit (CrossFit-esque training) classes, for sure. For us military, they offer account suspensions and month-to-month membership. I love this gym.  I have been a member over two years and go to this gym roughly five times a week; mid morning time frame.  Employees are friendly.  Classes are awesome.  Facility is clean.  Parking is good.  It is a very comfortable place to work out; regardless your fitness level.  I have always felt welcomed. One negative would be patrons sitting on machines scrolling through their social media.  Actually this happens many times.  Over ten minutes they are just sitting there looking at their phones, mainly young women.  As a older lady I find this ridiculous; use it or move. (Hip abduction and adduction machines). Some posing for Instagram photos in the weight/machine area, makes me chuckle.  Girls it is very easy to look good in your early 20s, you are not impressive but you do you and get those angles. :)Also, the Fit class running in the parking lot did disturb me when I was new.  It just seems dangerous, and I wish they would put cones/flags out during the class time as a heads up to those thinking about turning right and parking around the back corner. Overall this Gold's location does what it was designed to do- cater to UT Health San Antonio students, staff, and affiliates. My only complaint pertains to maintenance of cardio equipment. This location was petitioned for by students of UT Health several years ago. The petition stipulated that future students would buy into the gym's construction by contributing a portion of tuition fees to pay off the gym and assumed that gym patrons would mostly be students and affiliates of the university. If you are an affiliate of UT Health, you will have zero need to complain or compete over parking at this Gold's location because you already have access to campus and facilities parking. This will sound unkind to say, but if you are not an affiliate of UT Health in some fashion, this really is not the Gold's location for you. It won't be the easiest location to travel to and may not have all of the features you desire such as a full day of group class offerings. If you are a steroid injecting competitive body builder that wishes to throw weights around the floor and reserve and entire area of machines for yourself at once, this place is not equipped to meet your needs. Everything from parking, to equipment selection, to hours of operation and class offerings, to locker rooms were designed to cater to the medical student or professional who wishes to maintain a no-frills exercise routine before/after work or during breaks throughout the 24 hour day. The locker rooms are spacious, clean, and exceptionally well stocked making it perfect to squeeze in a workout before getting cleaned up and dressed to work a full day in the hospital or clinic. The facility even has sleeping rooms you may reserve for taking naps. "No-frills workout" is a keyword in my review here, however the gym more than adequately meets the needs for exactly what it was designed to do: make it easy for medical center students and professionals to come get a workout and get back to work. I've been happy to have had gym membership through my affiliation with UT Health, and this gym is considerably better at meeting my needs (enabling me to workout around my schedule at a convenient location) than the student gym did when I was at a 4-year university. My only complaint is that over the course of my 5 year frequenting this location the cardio equipment upstairs seems to have undergone zero maintenance or repair. It has become increasingly bothersome to be preparing for a workout while wondering what the competition is going to be like to access an elliptical that has all of its functions still intact (adjustable resistance, crossramp, working buttons, working TV screen that picks up all channels and working sound, moving handlebars for arm workout). I can live with one machine being broken down while waiting for repair, but it should be a given that all machines are equally well maintained and functioning. It shouldn't be stressful to scramble for a fully functioning machine and as a customer I shouldn't have to purposefully schedule my workouts during off times in order to increase my chances of accessing a well working machine. Some information from management on the cardio machines' maintenance or replacement schedule would be helpful and appreciated. More...

I'm a gold's studio member just for the cycle classes; I don't really use any other services so I'm basically just reviewing the cycle classes. (Everything else, in my opinion, is just an added bonus!)I was hesitant to pay $100 a month for cycle, but after looking at various cycle studios in the area, $100 a month for unlimited cycle classes is pretty good. I signed up at San Marcos, but I live in New Braunfels so I planned to come here more often anyway. After trying both gyms' cycle classes, there is a marked difference between the two and I vastly prefer New Braunfels. New Braunfels' cycle instructor staff is very professional. The classes are structured wonderfully, the instructors rarely leave the bike (another sign that these instructors actually know what they're doing), and classes start and stop at the time they are supposed to. I feel like I get my money's worth and then some. I've been cycling for years, and I've taken cycle classes almost everywhere in the area and Gold's in New Braunfels has the best classes, the best energy, and the best value.
