BRIAN SUTHERLAND – PHOTOGRAPHER
I worked with Brian in the latter stages of the construction of the Queensferry Crossing, the £1.
4 billion new bridge across the Firth of Forth opened in 2017. Brian is a first class photographer, always able to see a different and exciting angle or composition while also listening carefully to what I, as the client, wanted.
Whether asked to take close-up, technical shots of particular construction activities or wider, artistic views of the enormous and beautiful structure emerging above the waters of the Forth, Brian’s photographs were simply stunning, both in their technical expertise and the way in which he captured the sheer majesty and scale of the scene, setting the new bridge in its wider geographical and meteorological locations. Required on occasions to be on-site late at night or early in the dawn, Brian always successfully captured the scene required. Furthermore, he frequently returned to site on his own accord to capture particular views or lighting conditions which was very much appreciated. His photographs of the Royal Opening Ceremony performed by Her Majesty the Queen in September 2017 were easily the best taken by any of the many photographers present on the day.
Without exception, Brian’s photographs were of a consistently high quality and were hugely admired by everybody involved in the construction of the bridge. They were used in countless presentations and other publications produced by the construction team. Most prominently, they feature in “The Queensferry Crossing: Vision to Reality”, the 240 page official account of the design and construction of the new bridge which was written by myself and published in late 2017. Brian’s photographs complement the text perfectly and are the highlight of the book.
I have no hesitation in recommending Brian wholeheartedly as an outstanding photographer who always met – indeed exceeded - our brief first time, every time. Over and above that, Brian is an absolute delight to work with, possessing boundless patience and a great sense of fun. It really is a joy working with him.

Brian as an individual is a gentleman who in my experiences with has always been willing to offer advice to help me improve my photography .
For someone to interrupt their own work and take time to offer advice ,to help me achieve the shot, that is brilliant, in my book.
You only have to look at his work, to realise that you're in the company of a great photographer who knows his craft .

What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
There are many ingredients which are blended together to capture a great photograph. Anyone can press the shutter button on a camera and capture a photograph, A good photographer will not only capture a moment, but create one. They should have the vision and the ability to bring all the necessary components together and combine to create a great photograph
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I need to know exactly what the clients request, If the client is unsure and in need of advice or if compromise is required, this must be agreed previous to the start of the project . I would also like to know what the images are going to be used for, so I can adapt the shoot for their intended purpose. How many images are required from the shoot and the style of image. Am I responsible for the post processing of the images. Is there a deadline to work with. The location of the shoot. Payment terms.
What do you love most about your job?
There are so many positives to take from my job, from the tranquility of Landscape assignments, to the capturing everlasting memories on a couples big day. A deep sense of satisfaction knowing all the planning has came together and the final product has been received by a very happy client.
Meeting so many interesting and extremely talented people along the way. Always looking to inspire and be inspired, to creatively become better. There are endless boundaries in the world of photography of which most wont even scratch the surface, regardless of how much knowledge you have in this field, there is much more to learn, this is why I love Photography.
Why should our clients choose you?
For over twelve years I have worked on a number of assignments, from local press to major projects such as the Queensferry Crossing as one of three official photographers. I have covered large events , working to deadlines and produced images which have been used in Royal Brochures along with a foreword by Her Majesty The Queen. I have covered international events, Royal Openings and much more.
