When Architecture Workshops were looking to redesign our website (and rebrand) from the basic 1&1 site we'd done ourselves years ago, which we thought was OK, but honestly didn't really "work" in internet terms we google searched for Cambridge based wed designers and interviewed them, either at their office or our home. We didn't really know what we wanted, but had a ball park figure of how much it should cost, so discounted those that were way off that mark and focused on the smaller firms. You soon realise how important it's going to be to get the right person for your business. someone you feel at ease with, who isn't trying to over sell you or bamboozle you with tech jargon. Tom was pleasant and easy to talk to right form the start. He explained how he work build the website and how invoicing would follow each section of the build. He came with this breakdown to our first meeting, so we were able to easily compare his cost to others. He wasn't the cheapest person we spoke to but we liked him and felt he understood our business.The finished website is far better than I hoped for and made my 1&1 efforts look childish! He took our instructions and came up with a comprehensive redesign that gives the website a cohesion it never had before. Since then Tom has produced brochures for us following the themes developed for the website. What makes a great website?
A great website will give your customers exactly what they are looking for so they don’t need to go anywhere else. It will entice them, make them want to do business with you and, most crucially, make them take the next step by contacting you or buying your product/service online.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I like to find out all about my clients business and how I can help them succeed online, so questions often include;
- Where would you like your business to be in 1 year, 2 years, 5 years?
- What do you want to use your website for?
- Who are your main competitors?
- Where does your new business come from?
Describe your creative process.
Honestly, I don't really have a standard creative process. Every client is different and I adapt my approach depending on what the client needs. I like to meet with all new clients to find out as much as I can about their business or organisation so I can really understand what success would look like to them and how I can help get them there. This makes the 'creative' part much easier as I can design something that exactly fits their needs as well as being something that their customers will love.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
To kick off new projects I provide a free website consultation so that I can fully understand your website requirements. I’ll go through options on functionality, design, style and marketing to work out exactly what you need from your website. I’ll then send you a detailed proposal based on our meeting that clearly sets out the costs, timeframes and specifications of what I recommend. Once the client accepts the proposal then it's all systems go.
What do you love most about your job?
Definitely the people I have got to know. I have worked in such a wide range of industries over the years and have met some truly inspiring people growing their businesses - I love getting out of the office and finding about their worlds. Most of our customers have stayed with us for years so we've got some really great working relationships which we are very fortunate to have.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I come from a long line of entrepreneurs. Growing up I watched my father build and grow several different businesses and my grandfather build farms. I love having my own business - I get to build something that I am known for and work on my own idea of what a great business should be. I also love the flexibility it gives me and the time I get to spend with my children while they'e young.
