My name is Emeline. I offer services in language and flute tutoring.
I am a passionate linguist, and keen musician . Owing to a busy life I have not been able to dive into tutoring in the last couple of years, and now I am happy to have plenty of free time again to enjoy this offering.
Much of my childhood involved grappling with languages, as I come from an international background and began traveling in my early years. I continued to study French and German at University, coupled with International Politics. During this season of my life I tutored a client German, who gave me hugely positive feedback following his move to a German-speaking country. Hand in hand with my pen friend exchanges with a French friend of mine, where we taught each other our languages, and my mother's summer English school which I was involved in, I had a wonderful linguistic experience of both avidly learning, whilst sharing and teaching with others.
In addition to languages I developed a love for my flute from the age of 8 years, which I carried on throughout school, in orchestral and small groups, and in various organically-grown home bands at University. I led various flute groups as a pupil, which nourished my interest in supportive mentoring.
A few years down the line now I am able to take a professional approach to sharing my hobbies and interests in a tutoring format. I am happy to offer this both to children and adults.
My practice of teaching involves a harmony of structure and creative flow. I am completely committed to meeting you where you are at and tailoring the sessions towards your greatest advantage. With languages for example I approach this through layers; the grammar is as the skeleton of the language body. We need to place this as the foundation for building on, otherwise your grasp of it will not stand. And the pattern continues for vocab, nuances, and cultural understanding. I weave active speaking, listening exercises, games, reading and writing together. In the past I have made my own useful diagrams and pictorial charts to convey sometimes complex grammar as something much more enjoyable. I take joy in creating new colourful perspectives of approaching topics, styling this to be both fun and rewarding. The gift of a new language enables us to open our eyes to a new way of seeing something. It is a researched idea that gaining another language opens your brain and body to perceive the world in an altered, more rounded way, as if adding a whole new splash of colour to your palette. It truly is amazing, and you can only taste and see for yourself.
Regarding musical acquisition, playing the flute has been for me an exercise of both practical skill, deep learning, and mindfulness well-being. The way of the flute is such which asks for conscious breathing, undivided attention and an expression of who one is. This, I believe, is important in our modern day lives. My tuition will involve the basic skeletal structure needed to build a core of knowledge and skill in music making, this includes: holding the flute and placing fingers correctly for ease, posture, embouchure, the theory and practice of scales and their counterparts, how to read the music (if the musical language is new to you), exercises to build technical skill/confidence/sense of rhythm, the inclusion of specific technicalities, dynamics and so on. There is no problem at all if you have never been exposed to reading and understanding music. What might make me unique is my innate ability to explain sometimes complex topics into something easily digestible, stemming from my experience and love of sharing and teaching my interests.
