How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
The most important factor to consider when deciding if a loft is suitable for conversion is head height. The minimum head height allowable between the finished floor and the the new ceiling is 2 metres. From your existing joists we will need to build anywhere up to around 300mm, so this should also be taken into account. If you cannot achieve this head height then a conversion is still possible, but additional alterations such as adjusting the ridge height may be necessary, and will be subject to planning permission.
In addition, the structure of the roof itself is important. A traditional cut and pitch style roof lends itself to being converted, whereas a truss-framed roof cannot easily be converted without being stripped down and re-built in new timber.
