The Wooden Spoon Restaurant

Visited the Wooden Spoon for the first time last weekend, and it blew my mind! The ingredients were fresh and top quality (olive oil imported from Spain? Amazing!), and everything was delicious. "Cafe" may be in the name, but this was top-quality restaurant fare.  The crab cakes were fresh and delicious!I especially enjoyed the custom cocktails--as someone who can feel overwhelmed by a long menu, I appreciated that the Wooden Spoon staff listened to what I liked and made a drink just for me! I felt very taken care of. Most importantly, Yvette and her team constantly checked in with my boyfriend and I! They are friendly and dedicated to good service. We'll definitely be back! More...

Yvette and staff at the Wooden Spoon work diligently to offer a truly unique dining experience!  I have visited a few times so far and mostly recently had dinner yesterday evening - we had the zucchini carpaccio, mushroom ajillo, berenjena a la miel, and the crab cake.  All were delicious and offered a wonderful flavor journey.  Additionally, the bartender crafted delightfully inventive drinks after getting idea of our taste and liquor preferences.I don't see myself as the type of person to be a regular at any establishment,  but Yvette and folks at The Wooden Spoon are certainly close to having me change my mind! I had one of the best dining experiences of my life at The Wooden Spoon. This restaurant is located off Paterson near a few other small business. Although small this place is filled with charm. The restaurant has an enchanting warmth and coziness to it that just makes you feel at home. On Saturday nights they make Paella from 5-8 and it's delicious!! I had the pleasure of living in Spain for a few years and could taste the authenticity of my meal. Each bite took me to a sweet memory from many years ago. Oddly enough the owner had family members from the same region in Spain that I lived in. The staff enhanced made my already delicious dinner with their sincerity and great conversations. I chatted with them about my travels and learned about the story of the restaurant. Overall it was a great evening and I cannot wait to come back from breakfast. The best crab cakes we have ever had, and we have sampled many. Got a side pancake bc I missed breakfast and it was light with just a bit of crunch and sweetness. Definitely a treat. The staff was warm and friendly. We called ahead bc we were super hungry. They set up the table so we could just land and order. The spot was super cute & our server was friendly & pleasant. However, I ordered French onion soup (not available), then I ordered an eggplant appetizer drizzled w/ honey (no eggplant), a friend ordered something w/ salmon (not available). The 1st three items we ordered, party of 5, not available. 🙄 not the best preparedness. Especially considering it being a Fri at the end of May, the start of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. This was my second time coming to The Wooden Spoon and it was just as wonderful as my first time! My husband and I have been here for both brunch and dinner and have loved everything we've ordered. This place is horrible. Not only was it freezing in the restaurant, when we confronted them they did nothing. We waited 30 minutes for 4 salads. She never refilled the drinks and basically forgot about us. Upon leaving she picked up our food and we waited another 20 minutes for the bill. We ended up leaving to get everyone in the car and saw our waitress just standing there. We should have walked out. I will not be revisiting this restaurant. More...

Absolutely delicious!! I preordered this cake. When I walked in they already had my cake on the bar ready for pick up. Greeted me by my first name, open the door for me, and thanked me for my business. The process for ordering this was super simple. The owner communicated with me and was so happy to make this for me. What a hidden gem!  Attended a private event last night, and I will undoubtedly return.  The staff was incredibly friendly, engaging and knowledgeable.  It honestly felt like having a dinner party at a friend's house. Carlos is an amazing mixologist, providing delicious cocktails on and off the menu.  I couldn't have asked for tastier food.  I don't write reviews usually, but The Wooden Spoon should be a go to spot for everyone. You will flip over the pancakes in the Dad's Breakfast! They are some of the best I've ever had! Thick, fluffy discs of deliciousness!  Lightly sprinkled with powdered sugar and with maple syrup and an incredible berry compote on the side!! Magical!  (They have a secret that makes the pancakes so full of fluffiness, and they let me in on it... but you have to go try them first!) But that's not all folks, this breakfast also comes with two organic eggs, meaty bacon, or other protein choice, and house potatoes! They should really call this the Farmer's Breakfast, because we mom's love it too!! And don't forget to order a mimosa or a mom-mosa for brunch!! My previous reviews describe the other amazing menu choices at this shabby chic restaurant.  We are becoming regulars here, because the service and food is always superb!  I added a star because my last few visits have been perfect and Carlos, our server, is so personable and greets us by name!  This is my new fav breakfast spot... I stopped into the Wooden Spoon last month for lunch for the first time. All I can say is that it won't be my last visit.There was one server and one chef handling all diners and take-out orders . And they were hustling! We had to wait a pretty long time, but the little cafe has such a calming and welcoming vibe that we didn't mind much.I started with a latte, which was delicious. For my meal, I was a little startled by the $17 price tag but still opted for the Bocata Iberico sandwich. The description sounded too good to pass up.It arrived open-faced with Spanish ham and manchego cheese (love!) on crusty bread rubbed in olive oil. Oh my goodness. What an elegant sandwich. I was absolutely in love with the Wooden Spoon Cafe the very first time I stumbled upon it. There is a pleasant Mediterranean vibe, accented by beachy blues and white washed appointments. You are greeted by a friendly and knowledgeable staff, ready to provide excellent service. I could go on and on about the menu and specials that change regularly. Very inspired food that is all prepared in house with very capable hands. I give the food extremely high marks because there is purpose in the recipes, preparation and presentation.The Wooden Spoon Cafe is an extremely rare find. Adorable little gem on Patterson Ave, with beautiful interior and a cozy outdoor dining area. The menu will have you wanting one of everything, and do not forget to ask about the daily specials! So glad that the Wooden Spoon is open during COVID-19. Our waitress really took the precautions seriously. When I asked to be seated outside, she was so accommodating and immediately set the place for us. She was always there to refill our coffees or recommend her favorite dishes. Truly, if I lived closer, I'd make it a go-to every day! We loved our experience, and the food was great. The Wooden Spoon is my favorite place to eat in the entire region. It's a true gem. I went with family driving through from Maryland and they fell in love with it. They want to come again upon their drive back home.I ordered Paella last night for my wife, daughter and I and it was absolutely delicious!! Chef Yvette is a creative, culinary genius and a premier Chef of Richmond. She is extremely talented. Chef Daniel from Spain is masterful with his paella's and is also a culinary wonder! Definitely not the place to go for dinner. At least not right now. We briefly reconsidered our choice when we noted the grille a couple of doors down was busy while there were only two patrons in this place, but we decided to go for it anyway because of all the good reviews. We should have gone with our first impression. First we tried to order a cocktail at the non-existent "cocktail bar". We asked for a cocktail menu and the waitress brought out an older menu than the ones we had been given and pointed to the "beverages" section which also didn't include any cocktails. Rather than just apologizing and saying they no longer offered cocktails, she tried to make something up. My daughter asked if they had anything with cranberry juice. She said they were out of cranberry juice but could make a vodka cocktail with something else. We asked what type of juice they did have. She said "orange juice" so my daughter said. Ok orange juice and vodka is fine. A few minutes later she came back with a sprite loaded down with grenadine syrup with a small amount of vodka. No orange juice whatsoever. I wouldn't call us very picky customers, but this was  almost humorously bad. Salads came. Mixed greens with halved grapes and olive oil. No vinegar. Just oil. Then shortly after we ordered entrees, she came back and said she had some bad news. They did not have any crab for crab cakes. But they could make salmon cakes instead. My son said "sure". Daughter ordered a $35 filet mignon. I ordered cheese ravioli. Son ate the salmon cakes, but they weren't very good. Daughter said that it was probably the worst steak she'd ever had. I couldn't even eat the ravioli, it was so bad. It was rubbery, doughy, and obviously not fresh. The marinara sauce over it was tasty, but no amount of sauce poured over that pasta was going to help it. We declined dessert, paid around $100 for those three terrible meals and the non-cocktail and left. I realize that restaurants are struggling during this time. But it would be better to shut your doors than charge those kinds of prices for that poor of a meal. If cocktail bar is part of the name of your restaurant and you don't serve cocktails, it might be time to rethink the business, or at least be honest and up front and do a very limited menu but do it well. We left feeling like we just made a $120 donation to a failing restaurant. More...

Today my bf and I went for brunch in attempt to give this place a second shot. The first time we went (last month) was not the best experience but it was more due to the service. 1. The server never brought our ordered drinks. 2. My bf ordered the tomato soup and grilled cheese. When it arrived it was missing the soup. When he asked where the soup was, he was told they are all out. She offered the potato soup in its place to which he said ok, but the soup didn't arrive until after we both were done eating. I really enjoyed my meal. I had the veggie quiche with a pancake on the side. They were both AMAZING! Hence why I wanted to try it again. Today was another disappointing experience. The server let us know they were short handed and to bear with them, ok no big deal. Last time time the service was slower so expected it. My bf ordered the breakfast sandwich on a croissant, he was told they were out so a brioche bun was the only option. He's not picky so said ok and asked for a pancake on the side too. I ordered the quiche again, Lorraine this time. Our meal didn't take too long to arrive but when it did my quiche was cold af. Last time it was piping hot. But I was starving so ate it anyway. If the server had come back to ask how everything was, I would've told her and maybe have it heated but she didn't. Lastly, the side pancake was 1/2 the size as our last visit. The Spanish Hot chocolate is incredible with fresh chocolate it's amazing.  When I like something I keep going back I have eaten here like 6 times now.
