My wife has been bragging to me about this place for a while now. I finally got to see why and in four days I’ve been twice. The burger is the stuff of legend. Homemade oatmeal cream pies that will make you shed a single tear as you try and explain to your lunch date that you’re not crying, they’re crying. That wood fire grill is proof that you get out what you put in. Every single thing about this place is proof that the folks that own it love what they do. This was my first visit to The Russell and it will definitely not be my last. I am going to tell others about it as well.I was here with a group of coworkers . I ordered the Chicken on Brioche with a side salad and the warm apple crisp for dessert. OMGeeeeee! Talkin' about something good. My meal was delicious! To order your food, approach the counter and place your order, then you are handed an old car tag to place on your table; find a place to sit and the order is delivered to your table. Make sure to stop by and pick up your napkins, utensils and dressing, if you ordered salad.There was a total of 12 of us and most of us enjoyed our meal. Those who ordered the Steak Chimi (slices of steak on a french baguette) complained that the beef was a bit chewy and the bread was too hard (to cut). One ordered the humongous chocolate chip cookie and it was too hard to bite, but he returned it and received a fresh, hot out of the over, cookie. He didn't have to take hte pinch test because he could tell that it was soft. The restaurant is located behind Gates BBQ off 31st & Main (where the flower shop used to be). Wow, I'm going to go home and pack my stuff because I want to live in this place. The decor is STUNNING! The food is amazing and I didn't expect it, but the employees are really nice! I'm pretty pissed at my husband for keeping this place a secret from me. We got there at about 11:15am and it's a good thing we did, by the time we left at about noon, it was packed!I got the chicken brioche sandwich with roasted vegetables and my husband got the BLT with tomato soup. We got the carrot cake cupcake to split. My sandwich was tender and so flavorful and the bun was soft on the outside and just a little crunch on the inside. Really mixed experience here. Highlights: we were seated quickly despite them being busy. The House Salad was delicious and it was nice to try their namesake succotash on top. The Tomato Lemonade (The Antoni) was really interesting and refreshing and I really hope I can figure out how to make it at home. We have enjoyed the Russell since day one. What a beautiful space and creative menu. This past weekend we had the most amazing experience with their catering. Amante, one of the co-owners, created a spread that was hands down the tastiest and most picturesque of any of our wedding weekend. He also prepared a Cioppino in our home that guests said was the best they've ever had. I agree with that. The Russell has mastered the order at the register and find a table method of dining. This promotes a fast casual feel but yet the food is up there with any high end restaurant in the city. Located next to Gates on Main, this place can often get overlooked for mainstays in KC. However, this should be a stop on everyone's KC list. The theme is very Americana. This promotes a very at home feel and also make you not really want to leave after your food is done. The staff was very friendly and greeted as we walked through the door. Plenty of seating to fit all types of groups. The menu has options for everyone, while still being manageable. Best Salmon Steak salad I have ever had.The Russell has a really neat relaxed vibe going on with the laid back staff and farmhouse type decorations. Holy cow this place is amazing. It was packed this warm Friday afternoon and I know why! You order and pay at the counter and then your food is brought to you (amazing fast for as busy as it was! ) The Bibb Salad is a version of a Cobb with avocado, delicious grilled chicken, bacon, red onion, cashews (spiced?) and Parmesan cheese - lightly dressed with a green goddess dressing (didn't really taste it but the salad was plenty flavorful.) Gawd I love this place. I haven't found a single thing on the menu I don't dream about for days afterwards. The roasted root with chicken and that fabulous pear and blue cheese are faves. Today I tried the Russell bowl and the blend was creative and just right! The spiced beef was excellent and there wasn't a big pile of quinoa at the bottom, it was tossed in with the leaves for texture.
