My wife and I had an appointment at Kaiser Hospital @ 1:00 pm  and we finished @ 3:00 pm. We had missed lunch and were thinking of a nice brunch place in the area. Well, we turned the corner and remembered Hickory Pit as a really great "go to" place for something to eat. I remember the days of San Jose and Fremont which we use to Love to sit at the counter and watch the "meat men" chop those ribs for serving size. And the sauce to die for "Red for me and Brown gravy for her". We had a Wonderful server by the name of Alice. She was Excellent in checking with us for any thing we might need. Great Attitude and on time and in the right place with every portion. We of course ordered the ribs (junior), nice and meaty with a baked potato and baked beans. OMG there was even chopped onion, cheese, bacon and mushroom on the little cups on the side. You just don't know where to start with all the food. There was even corn on the side. Believe me, it's ALL good and brought to you with a nice smile and a kind word from Alice. Been coming here for years. The to go sports special is great. The turkey & ribs are really good. For the sport special I also get half regular ribs & half St Louis ribs. For the sauce, I get the original brown gravy [ extremely important LOL ] The baked beans & potato salad are good. The cole slaw is really good with a kick to the dressing. What I consider to be a hidden gem in the heart of Walnut Creek, Hick'Ry Pit has been one of my all time favorite restaurants to go to since I was even a mere fetus. When you walk into the restaurant there are pigs everywhere ... And no I am not talking about the people!! I am referring to the pork figurines dedicated to the diner's pig-theme (see photos). The establishment prides itself in their homemade interpretation of ribs and mama's pies. It's the only place I consider for an exquisite slab of ribs and they're worth every penny. Took my son one Saturday and we had a very good experience. Part of the reason for the 5 star review is because of parking. Many restaurants in Walnut Creek don't have a large parking lot. Its nice to not have to pay for parking. Once we were inside there was a big crowd and a 15 minute wait time, which to me is a good sign. Definitely a blast from the past in terms of decor. The food was served hot and it was delicious. Sad that more of these types of places aren't around. Cant wait to go for some lunch or dinner. More...

We ordered the bone in pork steak and jumbo deep fried prawns and both were delicious! The bone in pork steak was nicely cooked and not chewy at all with a good smokey flavor. Â Their soup was also really good, we had the vegetable beef stew and it was tasty and hearty. Â Our server was very attentive and helpful. While waiting for a loved one at Kaiser, a mid-afternoon breakfast to fill the void and just a couple minutes walk. True ingredients cooked as ordered, coffee that tastes like coffee, served hot, with counter service always making sure my cup is filled. Service with a genuine smile. Â Not sure how long I'll be waiting for my loved one at the hospital, so this is my destination for Hick'Ry Pit's famous pie and coffee later. Â I actually haven't had the occasion to dine here in awhile, but it brings back fond memories. We used to dine here a lot in earlier days gone by, and ordered many holiday pies to go, so this visit was nostalgic. Love the Jr. Rib plate!!! Â Been going there forever and ever never! Â Moved to Walnut Creek in the 60s and this place was our family date night spot! Â Love the fresh strawberry and peach pies! I had the Ultimate from the Pit sandwich which was wood smoked ham, turkey, bacon and cheese! Huge a yummy! I opted for the coleslaw to go with it and they have the best slaw dressing! It was an old 50s style restaurant, food similar. The ribs were good, just not cooked with bbq sauce. The rhubarb pie was made with crumbles which seemed to be too much on top.
