Came in last week to try out this highly rated BBQ hole in the wall. One negative thing about upstate NY is the lack of decent BBQ joints. Well, Memphis King is prob the best BBQ in the state. The owner greets you as soon as you come in, and you can tell he takes great pride in his BBQ skills. I was bummed we missed out on the ribs and chicken, but the pulled pork and brisket were fantastic, and not dry! Not to mention his homemade BBQ sauces and rubs are great. Anytime I head back out that way, Memphis King is on my schedule, and now I know to call ahead to reserve my meal so I don’t miss out. More...

First time going to Memphis king. Great atmosphere and staff. The guy working the counter was funny and personable. The food was amazing. Ok, I don’t give 5 stars often but here we go. From the moment you walk in that door you are greeted by a professional owner with a great sense of humor. The smell alone is a trap. You will be hungry even if you weren’t before you entered. The food is the best barbecue in Schenectady if not the capital region. They take their time to make the food and are so popular some people even call to order before lunch time to ensure they don’t run out. I know running out of something might sound like a bad thing but in my opinion, it improves the overall quality of the food. It doesn’t sit and get dry or refrigerated and reheated the next day. You are always getting the freshest food, the best food, and the best barbecue there is. The food is top notch, best in the capital region, possibly the state. However, do not drive to the restaurant without first calling to make sure they are open. Their website states that they open at 11am on Saturdays. I have driven there for three Saturdays in a row between 11am and 12 pm and they were closed. Pulled pork is good, nice dry rub and lightly sauced, with more on the side if you want. One thing though that is a must try is their pulled chicken, ultra tender full of flavor with some smoke. Two thumbs up for their chicken. Tried their burnt ends, they had a lot of fat on them, which I'm not a fan of. Should have less fat and more bark. So many sauces to choose from Big fan of their sweet mustard sauce and the king sauce.Sides, mac salad, potatoe salad are winners. Finally got the team together to hit the King for bbq. And it was worth the wait. I had the pulled pork with slaw sandwich and 3 ribs. The ribs were perfect and required no bbq sauce ( a true testament to how good your rib and smoking technique are). The sandwich was piled high with mouthwatering shredded pork and delicious slaw.
