The Governor's House Inn

We spent two nights at Governor's House Inn on a short honeymoon. I usually don't book hotels this expensive for myself but I've stayed in all sorts of very high-end places all over the world on business. Governor's House Inn ranks right with the best of them. This is a beautiful home in a great location in the historic district. It was easy to find and there was plenty of parking. The street is a little bit busy, but it was very quiet at night (and our room faced the street). The location is ideal -- you can walk everywhere in the historic district, but you are not in the most crowded spots.||||We stayed in the Laurens room, which was a nice size with a great shower and private porch. We were greeted by Ruth when we arrived. She was lovely -- gave us a nice history of the property on the way to the room. Everyone we met there was extremely friendly and helpful. We stayed three nights at The Governor’s House Inn while we were in Charleston for a wedding. It was definitely a beautiful and convenient place to stay. The historic house was built by one of the signers of thé Déclaration of Independence (who was married to a Middleton Place daughter) and later owned by a member of the prominent South Carolina Rutledge family. Currently owned by a Charleston attorney, the house is wonderfully decorated and maintained. The parking in the little adjacent courtyard is very convenient and the open side véranda has several appealing tables and chairs for guests who want to have breakfast al fresco or to while away some time in the afternoon while enjoying afternoon wine and hors d’œuvres. We were welcomed at our car upon arrival by Meredith who helped us in and showed us to our room, the Independence. Once we opened the drapes and shutters there was nice light although my husband was so disappointed that the windows in our room did not open. Next time we will spring for one of the rooms with balcony access. Aside from that, our stay was excellent although the great southern breakfast we were hoping for did not really happen until the last day when the new system started and we received vouchers for a nearby restaurant. We chose Millers All Day which was a quick two-minute walk and had the best shrimp and grits I have eaten as well as very fine coffee. Stayed in the Washington Suite, because we expected to have a 3rd person join us. Huge suite; lots of space in the living room, bedroom, and bathroom. ||||Loved the historical nature of the property. Beautiful woodwork and furnishings in the main house (we peeked into several of the suites upstairs, plus saw the public rooms downstairs).||||Very nice to have the wine/cheese hour - pleasant to chat with the other guests about their trips and plans in Charleston.||||Off-street parking was very handy, and the staff was gracious about allowing us to park there before time for check-in and after time for check-out.||||A few minor maintenance issues in our suite, but not surprising with the amount of upkeep necessary for a several-hundred-year-old property.||||Only surprise for this B&B was that it was somewhat short of a "B" - the morning of our stay, they initiated a program where breakfast was off-site at one of 3 (or on Mondays, only 2) restaurants in the area. We chose the East Bay Meeting House and it was very nice, but a bit of a hike if walking. (Parking was surprisingly easy there). After the nice wine/cheese hour spread, it was a disappointment not to have the breakfast done by the Governor's House staff also. More...

Our wedding and stay in the Middleton room at The Governor’s House Inn could not have been more perfect! The house is EXQUISITE and perfectly located to walk to everything you may wish to do or see downtown Charleston. The staff are so kind and accommodating. Everything about our week stay at this wonderful Inn was above expectations. We were greeted upon arrival by the concierge & she warmly gave us an informative tour of this historic Inn. We were encouraged to use all of the sitting rooms & we felt right at home. Our room was beautifully decorated & very clean. The entire staff was friendly, engaged & happy to assist. We drove to Isle of Palms beach one day & they provided beach towels, umbrella & chairs. Each morning we had a delicious plated breakfast & they were happy to take requests. We especially enjoyed the choice of having breakfast in the dining room or on the spacious, beautifully appointed Southern Porch. Each evening there was a wonderful happy hour with wine, cheese & appetizers, where we enjoyed meeting & getting to know the other guests. The Inn was very soundproof & we never heard the other guests while in our spacious room. The Inn is very centrally located to Historic Charleston & we walked everywhere. First time at the Governor's House Inn and would definitely stay there again when visiting Charleston. The Lauren's room was very spacious with a wonderful piazza to be able to enjoy the outdoors. Breakfasts were outstanding and wine and snacks offered in the afternoon was a nice touch. Kimberlee assisted with dinner recommendations and made reservations, which was very helpful. Highly recommend the Governor’s House Inn. The house was gorgeous. It was like stepping back in time. Staying where our Founding Father’s met and made decisions that shaped our nation was unforgettable. || The staff was amazing and helped us create a 20th Anniversary to remember. Upon arrival, we were given a tour of the home and history. At this time, we were invited to use the main floor as of it were our own. Each night at 4:30, the staff would provide wine and appetizers for the guests to enjoy. This gave you the opportunity to mingle with the other guests and truly feel at home. Each morning, you had the option of what you would like to eat fir breakfast. We chose whatever the chef was making. She was unbelievably talented at making a delicious breakfast. For our anniversary, they assisted my husband in booking a vow renewal, provided us the room of our choice, had champagne, and took all of our photos. The breakfast and happy hour snacks (served on the finest silver) were a real treat. We felt very pampered and transported back to the 18th century. We stayed in the Washington suite which was like having our own apartment. The Tempurpedic bed and jetted tub were a godsend after hours of walking and our arthritic bones! My wife and I just returned from a wonderful trip to Charleston, SC. It was our anniversary and we wanted a special place to stay. The Governor’s House Inn did not disappoint. Here is what to expect: superior customer service, delicious food, exquisite accommodations, and good old southern charm. Kimberlee and staff were attentive to our every need always saying hello and making certain that everything was to our satisfaction. They truly make you feel like you own the house. You will receive complimentary wine and cheese beginning at 4:30 pm and complimentary evening Sherry. The house was built in the 1700’s and contains original flooring, woodwork, and period antiques. You will be transported back to a time when people and attention to detail mattered. Tip: The Governor’s House Inn is one of a very few places in Charleston that has on-site parking (expect meters and paid lots in most areas) and is within 1.2 miles or less to all major venues. If you enjoy staying at bed and breakfasts you simply must stay here. We hope to return very soon. More...

We stayed for a weekend and fell in love with this place. The history of the house alone is worth staying for, but add into it the accommodating staff and the delicious breakfast at the table for 12 with the owner it made our experience even more impressive.
