In 1988, the year my son Johnny was born, I began a seven-volume treatise on American Domestic Architecture. 1988 was also the year that I tested into architecture graduate school at The University of Michigan, skipping the first four … I was already teaching at several colleges.

For many years I have designed houses and house additions and memorials, made statues of presidents, portrait busts of Supreme Court Justices, narrative statuary of national heroes, and have written books in prose and verse (a dozen-plus have been published). One book, The Classical Architecture and Memorials of Washington, D.C. sells especially well. My best-known house is the 10,000-plus square foot “New American Home” for the National Association of Home Builders.

Late last year (2021), I launched The Beautiful Home (TBH), the treatise on America Domestic Architecture begun in 1988 … I asked myself, “Does the world need another four-inch-thick doorstop.” “No.” I answered, and brought the book out as monthly ezine, www.TheBeautifulHome.org.

Most every month TBH highlights one of America’s 100 regional and period architectural styles. Too, the ezine offers advice on gardens, interior design, aesthetics, home improvement and other topics of interest to homeowners and homebuyers. Even should you not choose me to be your home’s architect, you might like, you might learn from my experiences, and from the many experts who contribute to The Beautiful Home.

Mid-June of this year, TBH began to offer stock house-plans and to accept commissions for houses, interiors, and gardens. Already (July) we are at work on a Georgian interior, a Virginia garden, a Dominican Republic house. Many of our projects will be featured at The Beautiful Home, yet yours need not be, if you would rather be private. Either way, I hope you chose me to design for you a beautiful home.
