The owners of The ‘401 got their start in the restaurant and catering business at Hungry’s Café and Bistro, growing a large corporate and residential catering base.

I stumbled upon The '401 while looking for a place to take my husband for a birthday brunch after church. Usually brunch places can get pretty packed so I wanted to find a place where you can make reservations in advance. My husband wanted brunch but he also wanted a molten chocolate lava cake so I needed to find a place that had both, lol. Right away I noticed it wasn't crowded at all, looked clean, and had a nice atmosphere. Even though we made a reservation in advance, we really didn't need it. There is a bar area inside and they had a nice drink menu for brunch. They had some yummy looking meals on the menu and we both enjoyed our food. I had the egg croissant sandwich and he had "The Traditional" eggs and bacon. My husband especially liked the bacon, haha - they were some decent and hardy slices.Sort of random note about the lava cake: my husband loves the chocolate molten lava cake from Chili's, but I feel like Chili's isn't as clean and well-run as it used to be, unfortunately. We gave the lava cake at The '401 a try and it was the closest one we've had to the one from Chili's. It had hot fudge in the center and ice cream on top... the only thing it was missing was the hard chocolate shell on the ice cream. It still had a chocolate drizzle though. Super yummy.Also, I really like that Yelp has a new feature (or at least new to me) where you can search for restaurants by the ability to make a reservation for a certain number of people on a certain day/time. This was a great place to catch up with a friend! The ambience inside is comforting, classy, and has ample seating. The staff and employees were so kind in their service and engaging in conversation. Additionally, they were knowledgeable in the food they were serving. This place falls into a slightly higher scale on food, think $14-16 an entree and $7-9 for apps. However, the food is delicious and I had a great time. It looks like they have some good specials depending on the day you go. I went on a Wednesday so it was a wine special, but wasn't interested in purchasing a Wine Bottle.Personally, I opted for a Mediterranean bowl which was flavorful, extremely filling (had to take home a lot), and healthy. It was filled with veggies you normally wouldn't see in a bowl like this. Super gooodd.We got hummus and pita + veggies and the goat cheese app as our appetizers for the night. I highly recommend you also add on their freshly squeezed lemonade as it was so refreshing. For dessert, we tried their chocolate lava cake with ice cream which was a great item to share. Upon my entry I was impressed, the restaurant is cozy and friendly. Joey the bartender my guy!! The menu has so many choices for all preferences. Our waiter was on point! Everyone enjoyed their entree , no complaints I mean not a one!! This place is a spot I could come alone or bring any size group to. Great brunch spot in Bellaire for small or large parties and you can get seated immediately on a Sunday without a reservation. I know I am supposed to focus on the food when reviewing, but I am going to begin with the fact that this restaurant has a play room for kids with a tv, raeding area, couches, toys, a technology section with tablets with Roblex, and an attendant who supervises the kids. What a win? Ok. Now on to the food. The appetizers were bomb. The entrées were ok. My crab cake benedict was not seasoned to my liking as well as mu husband's steak sandwich. We were looking for a place to eat in the Houston area and came across, "The '401". It had overall good reviews and the food looked appetizing from the pictures. The service was fine, but the food was mediocre. We ordered the Kabob Plate, the meat was overcooked and unsalted/unseasoned. Next, the Gyro Plate, where the meat was flavorful but cut too thick. The OG Burger and the Kid's Cheeseburger were very good in comparison to the other plates we ordered. Great spot. If you're in the 401, this is a place you'll want to frequent. The ambience is upscale yet casual. We are fans of the Cardinal Cobb for lunch because who doesn't love fried chicken. Visited The '401 for lunch. About 11:30. I had heard they allowed dogs. But just in case we inquired if it was all right. It was and we dined on the patio . Patio is covered. Some with cloth and some of extended roof. There are ceilings fans. As more patrons arrived tvs came on. Got to check in with Astros game. Astros winning of course. Â Just like restaurants used to The '401 served water without request. That was nice. Hubby tried a beer. New to him and he added lime. We also each had sodas. Hubby had the ettouffee. He said it was very good. Better than where he's had elsewhere. Staff very nice. Check on nicely. Offered the dog water. Very sweet, considerate. I had southern fried fried chicken. Fork tender. Food was delicious but service was not the best. Got weird racist vibes from the manager walking around that kept making eye contact but never came up to the table to check on us. I figured out the 401 and surprise it's the squirts....I don't know if it was the lukewarm tortilla soup or the room temperature tacos that did it but something did it. Such a cute, laid back spot for Happy Hour, lunch, dinner! Â My favorite part of dining here was the outside patio; it's huge with ample amounts of shade. The covered section can be reserved for a private party. We thoroughly enjoyed our waitress, Stephanie! Â She kept a smile on her face a suggested drink and food recommendations that were actually really good! Â My friend and I shared the Happy Hour portion of quesadillas which is the perfect size for 2. Really refreshing and I love that there are so many different options on the menu from American to Mediterranean. I had the Mango Avocado Chopped Salad w/ salmon and it was amazing big chunks of avocado and mango and very filling. My friend had the power bowl w/ chicken and I was able to try a patty which was really good and tasted close to a falafel. The Jalapeño Hummus was fresh and had chunks of jalapeño mixed in which was not too overwhelming. We added the cucumbers and carrots which was really yummy. This is one of those cool high-end foods casual dressing location. Made reservations sat down instantly when we got there. Took our drink orders got them back in a timely matter. When you look around the ambience of the restaurant is really cool and rustic. Everybody was nice and friendly. The only thing I didn't like some of the seats were really close so when I backed up I was bumping into somebody. But besides that the food was excellent. Everything was perfectly seasoned. While shopping in the area, we arrived during brunch hours but didn't necessarily want to indulge in brunch food. We sat at the bar and the bartender allowed us to order a few items from from the regular menu, this was definitely helpful in making our experience better than expected. Unfortunately I wasn't able to remember the bartenders name, but his personality was memorable. He paid close attention to the detail he put into every beverage he prepared. We are regulars of The 401, either in person or delivery. The food is usually very good; however, tonight it really was not. The quality was just below par, I had the cob salad and the chicken was dry and cold, literally cold. The broccoli in the Power Bowl was brown and the lettuce in the Cobb salad was old and mushy.
