Normally I do my own taxes. This year I bought a home with my partner, and I thought I should get someone professional to make sure I’m not missing anything.
I messaged Carrollton on Thumbtack and explained the situation with the house, and that we didn’t care how the mortgage/taxes were divided, we just wanted the best situation between us, either owing the least or receiving the most from our returns. He assured me no problem, I then submitted all the documents for my partner and I on his platform.
He responded very quickly and was always available when I had a questions, so that is a positive on his end. My taxes were completed very quick. I asked about my Partner’s taxes, and he said he was waiting on the mortgage statement. I said I didn’t understand how mine were completed without this since the reason we went with him, he was to determine the best way to split the mortgage in the most reasonable way, even if 1 person claims it all. I uploaded the same mortgage documents and he then reviewed (not sure why it was missed before). He said the best option was for my partner to take 100% of the deductions for the home. No problem. He told me I was getting a refund for around $1K. Great. I waited and nothing came in for a refund, I check the filing on the IRS Site and it says I owe $950 for my federal taxes.
I asked about this, and Stanley responded - Direct Quote
“Yes you would have received a refund, but after I completed the return you stated the 2 of you had agreed all the mortgage interest and property tax would go on your partners return. I sent you the updated return and you signed off on it.”
When I received this message, I was confused, Stanley had already completed my taxes without the mortgage because he thought he was missing the statement and I had to submit the mortgage statements again. I only found out we were missing them because I had asked about my partner's taxes and he told me he was waiting on the statement.
He also told me about the refund after he had confirmed all deductions would be on my partners taxes. So the timing didn’t make sense. How could the deduction never have been on my tax return but then when it is added to my partners, suddenly mine adjusts?
After this my partner said he didn’t want to use Stanley on his taxes because he didn’t trust him anymore, I let Stanley know this and this is the message he gave back, very unprofessional.
“ That's fine. It's his choice, but he should have been man enough to tell me himself. You just don't ignore someone in business. Tell him I've deleted his information. I would tell him myself, but he doesn't have a history of responding.”
I decided to review my taxes on my own, so I downloaded the forms from the IRS and filled them out and compared to Stanley’s, it was easy without the mortgage situation, which is why I normally do my own, and I discovered that he had given me the itemized deduction for around 3K vs the standard deduction for around 12K.
That made a big difference on paying in 1K to the IRS or receiving 1K. When I asked him about this he said,
“Yes that was from not knowing which way you were going. I have updated you Federal and am filing an amended return. This will get you the $1115.00 refund”
What I didn't understand was in the previous message he said I owed money in because of the updates to the mortgage on my partners taxes, but when I pointed out the deduction issue he said that he was waiting to see which way i went? It can't be both ways.
I said I was not happy and asked for a refund which he issued. I'm not sure what happened but I felt like I couldn't trust him anymore

I chose Carrollton because of the reviews. After working on a past years tax issue I am pleased. At first, I was concerned the separation of them being in Georgia and me in Florida was going to be a problem.
But once the ball got rolling, we were communicating and taking care of business as if we were sitting opposite each other in an office.
