We moved from Iowa to California for work and were sad to leave our local trainers. We had a great bond with the trainers in Iowa and didn't expect to find a place with a family atmosphere and friendly, positive trainers. Thankfully, we got recommendations to go to Tailored, and we have been super happy! Our German Shepherd and Golden Retriever love the classes, and we are learning right along side them. - Paul & Katelyn More...

We got a new pup from ARF and he was a little...weird. He was anxious, he barked at everyone, trembled at times, lunged at other dogs, he was a mess. I knew I needed help so he could gain confidence. I researched dog trainers and decided to go with Tailored Dog Training due to their great reviews. We had an initial visit with Nicole Kelleher. Luka barked at her the whole time she was in our house. So of course we signed up for six private training sessions.Nicole was kind, calm, patient, and obviously loves her job. She explained Luka's actions were due to fear and anxiety. We just needed to change his point of view. She told us about supplements for anxiety, taught us how to work with Luka, sent us videos about what she taught us, and met us in different places to see how Luka would do in real life situations. She even brought her stuffed dog out and "walked" it around the park to see how Luka would react. As Luka progressed, she brought her real dog Biscuit by to work on Luka's reactivity. Our crazy dog is still a little crazy. I am no longer afraid to walk him and come across another dog, however. I can take him out in public, watch how he acts before he reacts, and work with that. His progress over only six sessions has been amazing. Knowing that his calmness and maintaining low anxiety levels depends on us and our willingness to work with him has been a big help to all of us. Big thank you to Nicole for being amazing and willing to look a little silly all in the name of helping a scared dog become a happier, calmer, more self assured dog. More...

This review is specific to trainer Sarah Forde at Tailored Dog. I have taken dog training classes at various locations throughout the SF Bay Area Sarah is by far the best trainer I have ever had. She is patient and thoughtful and explains things in a way we humans can understand. She thoroughly knows dog behavior so can effectively help you work through any issues. I especially appreciate how well Sarah navigates the transition between two classes while also single handily ringing up sales. It's a lot for one person to do and she handles it without a hitch. We are SO thankful for Nicole and all of her help. We're expecting our first baby in July, and our dog had major leash reactivity. Six sessions later and he has vastly improved! We can actually walk nicely now, and know what to do if we see another dog or if we can tell our dogs going to have a reaction. It's amazing being able to take him in public again. Also, Zeke loves Nicole and all of her treats so that was a huge plus! Thank you so much Nicole! More...

Tailored Dog Training was very responsive to questions before scheduling my appointment, had great suggestions on the best path for my family and situation, and was able to get me an appointment right away without even asking. Sarah took her time and got to know us before laying out a plan of action. If I could rate Tailored and Ally with more than 5-stars I would! This is an outstanding dog training company and their approach to training is  welcome and needed to counter the negative and harmful prong collar and yank and yank harder methods espoused by many trainers who believe that this is the only way to have control of your dog. We experienced this type of training and were incredibly uncomfortable with it and found ourselves and our dog increasingly anxious. It did little to help our large GSD understand what we wanted him to do and resulted in strangers thinking that we were being mean to our dog. It was crushing to us. Our dog is a rescue and we desperately wanted to fill in the gaps in his learning and help him to be even better while on walks. He is a big love-bug and has superb house manners. We knew that we had to do something different and began researching and found Tailored and Ally. Ally's use of positive-reinforcement techniques and her deep expertise in dog behavior and related human behavior has accelerated our learning and understanding of our dog. We ditched the prong collar for a freedom-harness and we've been working with Ally for over 6 months and will continue to do so. Our dog has made great strides. We learn something each time that we meet and Ally is incredibly generous with her knowledge and resources. She gives us good homework to do in-between the sessions and tips to enrich him. I am So happy to have found this professional and fun dog training facility located close to me! I have been bringing my super high energy (and sometimes rather vocal) 11 month old German Shorthair Pointer puppy, Mika, to Tailored Dog Training since she was about 4 months old. Mika enjoys going as much as I do! We look forward to the thoughtful support and individualized instruction during and after all the classes, and we have taken quite a few- including Puppy Preschool, Tenacious Teenagers, Focus work, Loose Leash Walking, Agility, Recall class, Intro to Nose work, and Nose work Level 2. The classes are always followed up with a helpful and detailed e-mail reviewing what we did in class and giving us relevant activities to work on at home. I also had a series of 3 private training classes in my home to get more individualized instruction and practice in a one on one setting. It really helped for Ally to see the actual way I was handling Mika in my home, and she offered insightful suggestions based on her observations and Mika's age and stage of development. I am so impressed with the genuine caring, along with the knowledge and creativity of all of the trainers I have worked with, and its clear that they really love what they do. I have worked most closely with Ally Lantis, and Sarah Forde and no situation that Mika has presented has been too challenging for them. They are always available to answer any questions for me and truly help me see the bigger picture. Tailored Dog Training also offers a Train and Play class-a unique opportunity to socialize your pup, combining a well supervised playtime along with focus and manners training. This has given me a lot of insight into Mika's play style and how she interacts with other dogs in a safe and controlled environment. The new location and facility is a great size for all the classes, and their on site shop is stocked with all the treats and stimulating toys that any pup could ever ask for!! Check their schedule often as there is quite a variety of classes and workshops for all levels. More...

We have found all the trainers to be extremely professional and helpful. I trust my 1year old dog off leash in most occasions because of the amazing recall he has developed with the help of the recall class at a local park. Ally, Sarah, Jeremy and Rachelle have all been an invaluable part of our first year with our dog. We bring him as many places as we can and people always tell us how well behaved he is and ask us how to get their dog to act as well. We attribute it mostly to training early and often to help develop a flexible and confident personality that allows him to look and listen for our cues to help him behave in an appropriate manner. We've had an excellent experience with Tailored Dog Training. We first did a private in home session with Sarah Forde- she's fantastic. She is very experienced and knowledgeable about dogs - that comes through very clearly. She tuned into our 16 month old rescue mutt right away, and completely met her where she's at. She took in the various elements of our household (kids, another dog, cats), and adapted her approach as needed. She's also great with people! :) She communicates clearly and explains the various concepts and techniques really well. After our in-home session, we were ready for more. We signed up for the Loose Leash Training class, held at their gorgeous new facility on Treat Blvd. It's a great location- easy to get to, ample parking and right next to Starbucks. ;-) The inside of the facility is spacious, with very nice padded flooring. It's super clean, air conditioned, and well lit. There's a shop area at the front, where they offer treats and supplies that they've found useful for training. For our class, they had partitions up between each dog (there were 4 students total), which was genius because it cut down on distractions. Sarah was the teacher for the class as well, and she was, again, excellent. She managed to tailor the training to 4 very different dogs (and their people). She would add specific tidbits for each dog while keeping the whole class running smoothly. If a dog (usually ours) got barky or excitable, she quickly and quietly helped calm it. Sarah took time to answer specific questions from each family. After each class (our private session as well), Sarah sent an email summarizing the techniques/games we had learned, including links to videos demonstrating the games (so helpful). We've been so pleased with Tailored Dog Training, and will definitely be signing up for more classes. More...

Best dog training in the area in my opinion. I have used Tailored Dog Training for many purposes and am very pleased! I did a private consultation with the owner, Ally, with one of my dogs (Darby, a boxer, pit bull mix) so that I could understand him better.  He has been reactive to dogs in certain circumstances, anxious, and suffered from separation anxiety. Ally helped me understand Darby's triggers, comfort levels, and his preferred boundaries with other dogs; how I could best recognize the subtle signals he was giving, and how I could best manage Darby's life to make him comfortable, confident, happier, and fulfilled. Darby also attended their Reactive Dog class, which in a very controlled and safe environment, allowed more work on the above goals.  This allowed Darby to be able to participate in some of their 'regular' classes.I have also brought my 85 lb American Bulldog, Bo,  to various classes because he loves training and is an eager student. He has even taken the beginning agility class! He might be slow and lumbers through but the teachers love his enthusiasm, personality, focus, and unique charm.  I appreciate that they care about their canine students and strive to provide a good experience for every situation. Tailored Dog Training accepts and appreciates all dog breeds and will work with you to understand your dog, manage their quirks, and guide you and your dog through any stage, from puppyhood, the terrible teenage stage, and into adulthood.  Ally and her staff of trainers are all excellent and knowledgeable. You can gain a deeper understanding of your unique dog, learn tools to creative a more healthy environment, learn fun and entertaining tricks, all the while you and your furry friend deepen your bond and have a great time together! We found Ally through recommendations on our Nextdoor neighborhood social media connection. She came highly recommended and we were not disappointed! Our 4 year old Golden Retriever has dog aggression issues that made it very difficult to go on walks without a lot of pulling, barking and growling. Ally showed me right away that our dog was stressed demonstrating how he would stop eating treats as we got closer to a stuffed dog placed across the street! She would take a few steps back and then he would resume eating. This was his threshold.  Interesting!  We have just finished up on a private lesson package that has really educated myself, my family and our dog.  He is able to walk by another dog without reacting!  We know this is a continued process and we will keep working with him. Thanks to Ally we are finally able to take walks around the neighborhood without our dog or myself being stressed.Ally also was great about answering questions about our other small dog Maddie.  She also has dog aggression issues. I asked Ally why do all our dogs have aggression issues?  She explained how they pick up each other's behavior.  In retrospect, I also see what errors we did as owners to foster this behavior.  Taking our dogs to a dog park thinking that they need to "socialize" at an early age and not realizing that they were actually stressed about the situation. I wish we had met Ally sooner before we "messed" up our dogs! More...

This review is very overdue, but I am so pleased to write it.  This past winter I was having problems with my 10 year old Japanese Chin Kayko and my 17 year old Poodle/Pom mix Shai.   Shai had been suffering with Canine Cognitive Dementia for the past few years and her behavior had gotten progressively bizarre.  Kayko was confused and upset with her which led to physical fights.   I reached out for bids on Thumbtack and Ali's was the only company that understood what we were going through.  She came out to the house, assessed the situation and very honestly and realistically told us that ongoing classes were not the solution for us.  Instead she showed us how to work positively to change th environment to assist Shai and to positively reinforce Kayko for her good behavior when near Shai.  She wrote everything out and explained the rationale behind all of the training.  Within a week we had a much happier household.  Sadly Shai passed away in March, however two weeks ago we welcomed 10 week old puppies into our home!  We are using the techniques Ali taught us to get Kayko acclimated to the puppies and just enrolled them in puppy socialization at her facility.  We plan on continuing their eductation with classes and eventually enrolling one of the pups in agility and the other in th Canine Good Citizen so that she can visit at hospitals and nursing homes. I'm writing this review after having completed another successful session with the Tailored Dog Trainer herself, Ally Lantis. I originally found Ally about a year ago after having come from a trainer who recommended the use of aversive collars on my dog and employed training based on outdated "dominance" theories. I looked online and came across her website and immediately emailed her detailing my experiences and what I wanted to accomplish with my dog. At the time, Jax, my German Shepherd/Doberman mix, was about 3 months old and nipping and biting everything. I scheduled a private session where Ally gave us the tools and techniques to get his biting under control. Within a week of employing these techniques, the biting of hands, feet, and dangling sleeves had completely disappeared. A year past and my family and I realized that we were struggling with ways to stimulate him as well as deal with his rambunctious, adolescent behavior. He liked to chew on the wall and wooden furniture, pull on leash, and we started noticing that he had some anxiety. We emailed Ally and scheduled some sessions and she has been a lifesaver. She gave us tools and tips to deal with his anxiety, his under-stimulation, his destructiveness, and now a month and a half later, it's as if we have a completely different dog. He doesn't chew on the wall anymore, he's more responsive to commands, and he's coming along fantastically on his leash pulling. Ally is creative and resourceful in her training techniques and I know this has been said before but she really does "tailor" the training to the dog. I can't say enough about how great of a trainer she is. She just "gets" dogs. More...

Nothing but great experiences with Tailored Dog Training and the owner, Ally. My fiancé and I found Ally a few weeks before we brought our Cardigan Corgi puppy home. We really needed help with all the logistics that go into puppy ownership. Ally came by the week before we brought Gizmo home and gave us great pointers on potty training, brain games, feeding schedules and healthy treats. The information she armed us with really made our first few nights with Gizmo seamless. Ally came by after we had Gizmo for a few weeks and helped us with some basic tricks and crate training. Gizmo really responded to Ally from the moment she walked into the door. She just has an incredible way with dogs. Gizmo went on to do group classes with Ally, some additional one on one training and even spent a full day with her a few months back working on daily training (like being around kids, leave its, and so much more). Ally is pleasant to work with...she really knows her stuff. Plus she gives you great insight into your dogs behavior. I am so thankful we found her last year. It made all the difference in the world. We get compliments on Gizmo's behavior all the time--and while we do work with her daily, Ally is really the person to thank! She laid some amazing ground work from day one. People are actually shocked when we tell them Gizmo is only a year and half. Do yourself a favor, skip the Petco group classes and hire Ally instead. You won't regret it! More...

I found Ally on YELP and was not disappointed!  She deserves 5 stars and more. I called her when my new puppy was only a few months old and have done private lessons as well as her classes. She is very knowledgable in dog training with positive reinforcement and Maggie has learned quickly. Highly recommend. More...

Ally is amazing.  My 9-year-old Border Collie had many in-house problems, mainly barking and circling around my husband and I when we would leave the house.  We could be leaving to take out the garbage and she would have a fit.  Our first private session with Ally cured this.   I am astounded that after years of trying to fix this problem by watching Youtube videos, reading countless blogs, and purchasing "calming" dog products, it only took Ally an hour to show us how to handle our dog.  Within a week our dog was much more calm and we can leave the house with very few problems. After our second session our dog is successfully working on not barking at the doorbell and rushing to our guests.  We plan to do a few more sessions with Ally for a couple of other problems.  I cannot sing Ally's praises any louder.  Her prices are very reasonable and 100% worth the money and time. This is a review for our first visit for private training. Ally was on time, and very professional. She jumped right in and we discussed the top things that I thought we needed to work on. She was very intuitive to the dog and my actions. She left me with a lot of tips and tools to start the journey. I will definitely be calling her back for a regular session.A+ all the way. She is very knowledgeable with ALL breeds. You can tell that she has worked with all types of dogs, and any issue you could imagine. She is very witty, and pleasant to be around. More...

Ally is absolutely amazing! In the past we've done the Level 1 training with our Shih Tzu, Lily and although we didn't move on to the next level we still are using everything that we've learned. Recently we adopted a corgi/chihuahua mix dog (Zoe) who is almost 4 years old. At first she seemed like she would be just fine and but it quickly  turned out to be the opposite. We asked everyone that had a dog what we could do and were really at a loss and until we thought of Ally. We sent her a message on Facebook and she responded asap. Even though she was away from home and on vacation she still set our minds at ease and provided us with information that instantly made a difference. Zoe began opening up and let us in. We set-up an in-home session with Ally on the day she returned home and once again learned so many things that we could be doing to help Zoe get acclimated to her new home. Anyone out there looking for someone that is knowledgeable, friendly and just overall awesome you've got to contact Ally at Tailored Dog Training. More...

Ally is an awesome trainer.  Zeus and I are just finishing up her level 2 class and we're going to start level 3 in January.  She always has an answer for any kind of barrier we hit during our training and it always works.  She knows not all dogs are the same and even in group classes, she will tailor the activity to the specific dog as she goes around the group.  For me, Ally has been a blessing.  Not only has she helped me learn how to better train my dog but he's come so far since we started classes, I no longer find myself getting frustrated with him.  Zeus is a barker and she's given me multiple tools to calmly get him to stop barking and while I don't think he will ever resist the urge to bark, he's gone from a constant repetitive barker to a more one or two bark notification barker.  I can live with that. :) More...

We adopted Thor in the summer of 2012 after falling in love with this handsome Pitt bull mix rescue. He was 11 months old and we could tell that he would be the type of dog that needed time to warm up to new things. He wasn't mean- just fearful. We didn't know that this fear would turn him into a reactive dog. Over time he developed some very bad habits. He started barking and going on what looked like attack mode when we saw other dogs on leash, cats, and squirrels. I was at my wits end. I loved my dog but I couldn't figure out how to help him. Enter Ally. I found her via Yelp and I am so happy I did because she's worked wonders. The "tailored dog" part of her title isn't just for show. She has helped me understand how to work with Thor's natural instincts and the results have been amazing. I've been working with Ally since this summer of 2013. I'm one of her private clients because it works best for Thor and I. This morning, I had the best walk ever. We walked for an hour and passed dozens of dogs with nary a sound from Thor. It was amazing! We're still working on passing cats and squirrels but I'm confident we'll get there. If you do decide to work with Ally here are some tips: do the homework, read her blog, and like her on FB. She has great tips. If you can't do the social media part just make sure you do the homework. More...

Ally is wonderful! I found her through Yelp and am so grateful that I did. We desperately needed some help and strategies for managing 3 dogs with baby weeks away. Ally quickly assessed the situation and was ready with ideas and pointers. She is calm, really listens, and what she says makes so much sense! We had her come twice before baby arrived, and felt much better about how things would go once we brought him home. Her advice and strategies have been lifesavers for us. She came back a few weeks after baby arrived, and gave us more tips and practice with management. I hate to think how things would be had we not found Ally and had her work with us. We will be calling her as needed for maintenance and more tips. You will be glad you called her, just like we are! More...
