Personal Trainers

I used bark in order to find a personal trainer to expand my knowledge of health and wellness and help me reach my goals. After meeting with multiple of the people that bark provided me with, I felt most comfortable right away with Sustained Fitness . I was able to get a personalized workout with a trainer giving me tips on my form in order to maximize my workouts. My time at Sustained Fitness has made me feel more confident in everyday life and in trying new workouts. I feel stronger than I ever have before! More...

Sustained Fitness Review

Three years ago at age 61, I had my left shoulder replaced. During my recuperation and year-long physical therapy, I recognized that I needed to work with a personal trainer if I was to regain my former fitness. I put a post on the app Thumbtack, and three trainers, one of whom was Ryan Billich at Sustained Fitness, responded. Ryan had just completed his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Northeastern University, and in our initial interview, he displayed a professionalism, knowledge, and interpersonal skills that made him stand out from the others. I signed on with Ryan which has turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Now at 64, after training with Ryan for three years and primarily due to his guidance and encouragement, I am in the best shape of my life.

I have worked out fairly consistently since my mid-twenties and at various points have been coached one-on-one by fitness instructors. Looking back, I appreciate just how exceptional Ryan is in comparison to those other trainers, who, while good, did not show the same investment and attention that I receive from him. In retrospect, I see that their programs did not target my specific needs and body. Sometimes, in fact, the training sessions felt more about them than me. In contrast, from our very first session, Ryan’s focus k been fully fixed on my best interests. Early on, Ryan helped me to articulate my personal goals, and as I have progressed, he has encouraged me to refine and set new targets. He formulates a plan for each session so that each workout builds on what has gone before and on where we are headed. Because he is a physical therapist as well as a certified fitness instructor, Ryan is able to formulate routines that directly target and rehabilitate problem areas. He continually stretches and challenges me while also being aware of my age and restrictions such as arthritic toes. As a result, I have gained strength and definition, redistributed weight, and increased my stamina.

Ryan’s effectiveness is due in large part to the fact that he has made an effort to know me well and to understand my personality and values. He appreciates the life experience I bring and seeks to build on my aptitudes and talents. Some people respond well to drill-sergeant coaching, but I do not, and Ryan intuits how best to motivate me. While our workouts are serious business, they are also fun and full of laughter. With his kind, upbeat attitude, Ryan stresses the positive while giving honest, clear, and specific feedback so I can make the appropriate adjustments necessary to get the most out of each exercise. Without preaching or talking down to me, Ryan generously shares his extensive knowledge to educate me on technique, physiology, and nutrition so that I am able to apply what I learn to design my own workouts and to generally lead a healthier and happier life. Indeed, his business is aptly titled, for through my work with Ryan, I am enjoying sustained fitness.

Ryan and his business partner Adam Babcock share a business model and vision that encompasses creating connection and community; this is immediately apparent by the welcoming vibe of the studio. The adjustments that they have made to address issues with COVID-19 are just the latest testament to their desire to create a safe place for all. I feel fortunate to be part of the Sustained Fitness family, and I whole-heartedly recommend Ryan to you.

Adam and Ryan are excellent trainers.  They make you want to come back and achieve your goals.  Sessions are highly tailored, not just to the client but to what is going on at a point in time (jetlag, soreness, etc...).

Q&As

Our biggest strategy in helping our clients achieve their goals is working with them to gain a sense of control. People often seek out trainers when they are trying to get started (or restarted), when they feel lost with their current workouts, or in our case sometimes when they have an injury and are afraid of hurting themselves again. Our job is not only to help give a few workouts totaling a few hours per week with each client, but to help them find the strategies that best suit their personality and behavior so that they feel in control all of the other hours of the day/week. A lot of fitness professionals can make a person work hard for an hour, but developing strategies and habits outside of that hour is where we can help create the most change.

Consistency built around smart programming, eating quality foods, and making recovery and sleep a priority. These aren’t a secrets, but everyone is going to have varying difficulty in adhering to these things. We want to help people understand their drivers and their barriers, so they can develop strategies to achieve their goals. “You just need to eat right and exercise hard” is lazy. Find a coach that will put effort into finding what works for you, not just giving you what works for them.

We love helping people make lifestyle changes and learn to love what can often be a frustrating experience. Building a community of people who are pushing towards improving their lives is incredibly rewarding.

Frustration with the current fitness and physical therapy models and industries. We wanted to bridge the gap between the two, and get away from the gate-keeping Fitness industry, because improving your life is not exclusive to people with lucky genetics. The current physical therapy model is driven by insurance companies, not clinicians and leaders in the field. The patient doesn’t come first in this scenario, and we wanted to change that. We want to show people that at any level, and any age, they are resilient, and their body is capable of amazing things.

We are looking at the long run, not instant, unsustainable results. This is an investment, and we want to make sure that the dividends pay out handsomely. Our brand promise is “Results Today, Longevity Tomorrow.” We are aiming to give you some strategies on day one, and follow this up with long-term, sustainable change, based on your individual needs and goals.

No, we are not taking any more online clients, besides for individual programming. However we want to see you in person before providing this programming.
