I came here with my family over the Xmas weekend. Â This place is so good we came back twice on consecutive days. Â My kids loved their Mac and cheese and fried chicken. The only complaint I have is I didn't get to try the whole menu. Â The fried chicken is fried just right. Â Crispy on the outside, and ridiculously juicy on the inside. Â Freaking delicious. Â The po' boys are huge and they give a very generous serving of shrimp/catfish/chicken. Â The sides were good, grits, greens, and candied yams were all yummy.For those who are more adventurous, the fried gizzard is so surprisingly soft and almost melts in your mouth. Â The Chinese usually cook gizzards differently and comes out more chewy, so this was a very different and interesting way of cooking it that I have never tasted in my life. Â Definitely good. Â The best thing that both my wife and I thought we ate was the Ox Tail. Â Holy cow!!! Â Again, completely different way of cooking that I have never really experienced previously, I'm more used to eating Ox tail with a tomato or red wine braise and it's usually kind of sweet. Â The Suckerfree Ox Tail totally different with a very distinct and more salty taste. Â It was good. Â Like Epic good. Â If you enjoy Ox tail you should definitely order this. Â I highly recommend it. Â For dessert we had the pecan pie and beignets. Â I had to forfeit the last beignet to my wife but I was so stuffed I was almost like the dude in Monty Python Meaning of Life......This place is awesome. Â There are tons of options in that whole Gaslamp area but if you want good southern food or just good fried chicken this place is it. Â Run, don't walk to it. I took my Daughter, Sister, and three grandkids (over 18 yrs old) ... it was their first time and couldn't have been any more excited being there with me (Mo'Betta is my handle) . .. The Food was soooooo goood! Fried Chicken (the best so juicy and crispy), Shrimp PoBoys (loaded with shrimp), the 3-Fleet of Mac n Cheese was to die for!!! Creamy Grits were perfect, Collard-Greens, Fried-Okra and the Fried Green Tomatoes Slices were awesome as were the candied yams- we also had 3-orders of the Chicken and Waffles (look out Roscoe's) But most importantly the service was "outstanding" Our pretty server's name was Sadie! Our server who was also working as the bartender was phenomenal! However, I went to the ladies room and advised them that it really needed attention and not one of the women the server asked to take care of it went in there. We were seated right by it and could see if a worker was going in. Also, one of the other servers, a lady with twists walked by and I asked for a plate, as I didn’t have anything to eat off of. She Brough me a saucer. What since does that make to bring me a saucer when my husband had a plate for his meal and mine can all on saucers. This place is awesome! I had a show dow the street at the balboa theatre to get to, so my brother and I came in and told them we only had an hour to eat and leave for the venue. Our waiter Michael was attentive and had a great personality. He suggested drinks and an appetizer for us, both of which were absolutely delicious. Geaux Saints! WHO DAT!!! Brees is back and we are Super Bowl bound, determined not to be robbed again this year. This is a great place to watch the games, and to get some fabulous Southern cooking. This place, quite frankly, serves the best freaking food I have ever had! Â And I love to eat. We started with the Mac n cheese flight and my mind was blown. Three different samples of melt in your mouth- taste explosion versions of an all time fave. The fried okra was delish. It was served with two yummy sauces but was great eaten solo. For entrees we had the shrimp and grits and the helping hand. I've never seen my 20 year old son happier! Â He ordered a side of yams and holy cow the sweet juicy softness of those yams! The food here is amazing. Our table got the chicken and waffles, Mac and cheese, cheese grits, and greens. Phenomenal.The only issue I have is how expensive the bottomless mimosa deal is- $30. ..?!?!?! I know San Diego is expensive but that is ridiculous. Although the food is amazing, the place does not seem to be generating a big enough crowd. The restaurant should be PACKED Saturday's and Sunday's for brunch. I ran across Suckerfree on a search for a place to host a dinner for my coworkers during an out of town conference. The staff here were so awesome. Very accommodating and friendly. Not only did everyone love the drinks and atmosphere, but there were nothing but rave reviews about the food and how fast everyone was served. There was about 35-40 of us. I was thoroughly impressed. Listen, this is the best soul food restaurant in San Diego... it's quietly hidden in the gas lamp district. I stumbled upon on a recommendation from my Lyft driver. I first got there the waitress from Arkansas was absolutely amazing. She was friendly. Answered questions and made the best recommendations. Make sure you check out the chicken friend chicken.
