What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
Many people think that you need the newest and best equipment to take a great photo, and while better equipment can help, the biggest factor in taking a great photo lies in the ability of the photographer to use their vision and knowledge to create a beautiful composition using available equipment, light, and surroundings. One of my most popular photos was taken years ago with a pretty simple, entry level camera and an inexpensive zoom lens. It is a photo of a gorilla at the Fort Worth Zoo, and it is currently on the front page of the web site of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums at www.aza.org.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
The first question is what type of photos they want, and what are they planning on using the photos for. Once I know what their expectations and desires are, the next questions will be about location, time, and details that will help with the actual shoot.
What do you love most about your job?
I love capturing beautiful scenes and preserving them in a photograph. I am more of a naturalist and prefer to try and capture what I see and preserve that image. I don't have a problem with others who use a lot of filters or photo manipulation to an artist rendering of the scene, I use Photoshop to "tweak" photos and bring out their beauty, but try not to over process them and lose the beauty that I saw when I took the photo.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I've always been a free spirit, and working for myself allows me to pursue may artistic dreams by doing something that I enjoy. Whether it's taking beautiful photographs, or twisting balloons into fun sculptures, I not only get to earn a living doing something fun and artistic, I get to share that art with others.
Why should our clients choose you?
I have been a professional entertainer since 1989 and am very good at working and dealing with people of all ages. That ability to work with people carries over into my photography and helps me put people at ease, which helps them relax so they don't look tense or nervous in their photos. As people relax and let down their guard, their true self and beauty can shine forth and be reflected in their photos.
