We used Starfish Coastal Catering for our daughter's fundraising event that we hosted in Laguna. It was incredible! The food was all perfect! All of the appetizers were beautifully executed and delicious. We got a ton of compliments on the entrees that we chose for our buffet. When choosing menu options, Starfish was really great by helping us pick the best options within our budget. The Starfish staff were very knowledgeable, friendly, and extremely hospitable. We had yet another fabulous time at Starfish Newport Beach! We absolutely love coming here, not just for the delicious sushi, but the amazing service! I can't begin to explain how friendly, kind, and attentive our server, Jesse, was. My husband and I visited Starfish to celebrate his birthday, and we were thoroughly impressed with both the food and the versatility of the menu, ranging from sushi to curry. We hired Starfish Coastal Catering for our 2023 Holiday Party at our home. From my first conversation with Paige it was a seamless experience. Paige assisted me with everything from food choices, rentals and service staff. From the moment they arrived the evening of our party, they took charge and made our evening stress free and very enjoyable. The food was wonderful, as always, but the servers and bartender were amazing! Starfish Catering did my Christmas 2023 party and their delicious food, set up, and bartender were just fabulous! The outside bar service was such a hit, AND, their bartender is the absolute mixologist! Ah, the tale of six intrepid gastronauts venturing into the southern side of Laguna Beach for a birthday bash extraordinaire at Starfish, where the motto is "A Tantalizing Exploration of Asian Coastal Cuisine" - and let me tell you, they're not just tossing fancy words around! Imagine us, a merry band of diners, nestled into a booth that was as 'cozy' as a hug from a slightly overenthusiastic aunt. The noise level? Just right for our top-secret gabfest, not a word lost in the din. The menu was like a culinary treasure map, and our waitress (or was she a food maestro?) was the perfect guide. She pointed us towards the Lobster Macadamia roll - a sushi rollercoaster with lobster (because, obviously), avocado, mango, cucumber, and nuts doing the tango! Then, like a smoky genie from its wok, came the Wok Fired Edamame, tossing a peppery, salty spell over us. But the pièce de résistance? Came into Starfish on a Friday evening with a group of 4. We made a reservation, which I highly recommend if you are able to plan ahead. First, the decor in Starfish is phenomenal. It feels like you are in not just another restaurant. I absolutely love the paintings, and although it's a small space it didn't feel squishy to me. Our waitress was awesome. Starfish has a larger menu, but she gave us great suggestions and we actually ended up ordering the perfect amount of food. The drinks are extremely unique, and we all got different drinks but unanimously loved them all. For the food, we ordered a sushi roll, dumpling, miso cod, and basil chicken. All food items were absolutely phenomenal. From presentation, to portion size, to taste, we were blown away by the dishes that came out. One suggestion, is that we got the spicy dumplings. And be ready for the spice! They were too spicy for me, however others at the table thought they were incredible. Excellent service although the reception and seating is a little "rocky"....we made reservations for 230pm on Saturday and when we arrived the place was empty save two tables. We parked right in front no shortage of spaces. We're pretty short and sitting at high tables leaves us with our feet off the ground. Over the space of a meal that's uncomfortable. So we started out our visit uncomfortable and when we asked for a better table the choices were worse. Also it was a cool day for California...we just finished a rain and we starting to get another and the two front doors were wide open and the breeze was cold blowing through the dining room. We asked for the doors to be closed and they obliged...thank goodness we "won one." I know the other guests thanked us. By 330pm the place was packed and every table filled. The noise is so loud and the music makes it necessary to shout over the others guests...older people with Tinnitus are just not going to make it here...seems like a place for young people. And because the tables are very close together, the problem is even more aggravating. We tried eleven different items for 3 people and shared. Every dish was excellent but we especially liked the Nigiri Sushi, Pork Dumplings, OG Vietnamese Roll, Samba String Beans, Rickshaw Ramen Noodle, and the desserts. The most troubling thing about the menu is the lack of sourcing information. We don't know how they purchase their fish...we don't know how they purchase their meat....we don't know how they purchase their produce...most people trust them to procure the best of everything....I get it. But each of these products have hidden problems and most of the top chefs spend 50% of their time on sourcing....visiting local farms, checking ranches for how they raise their chickens, checking ranches for how they raise their cows, etc. You can save alot of time when you don't feel the pressure to answer questions about sourcing. But as food gets more and more toxic, as fish become inedible, and as protein is attacked by people who want to sell you insects...the sourcing question becomes even more important. This is not a place to have a relaxing meal with feet on the ground and the ability to hear your dinner mate over the soft music. I had enjoyed the sushi at this place but its Chinese foods were a startling disappointment: We ordered delivery of Kung Pao combo ( shrimp & scallops), Mongolian beef, and wonton soup and none of them was any good. So much of them is now in our compost bin. This was likely the worst I have ever had in Chinese foods for a decade. Gonna love great food at Starfish in Newport Beach (Orange County). This is their second location (smaller one). Their original location is in Laguna Beach which I first went to 6 years ago. I must say I was hooked on their tasty food. I came here last Sunday night after work for some dinner. My go for drink is a Laguna Lemon Drop which is named after a beach town called Laguna Beach. Really good drink to get nowadays. Tasty. For dinner, I ordered a crispy lobster spring roll and shrimp dumplings. As soon I got my orders, it looks soooo good. I really love the presentation. For the spring roll, comes with 4 pieces, I took a bite, I was quite wow'd by the amazing flavors. Feels like I'm enjoying a rich and satisfying life just by eating the spring roll. Dumpling was stunning. Tasty and delicious. Even though portion size can be small, size isn't that important. What important is the quality of the meal which I expect from every single upscale restaurant. Yes, I'm very big on quality. Quality was excellent. That's what I want. My previous visit which was almost 2 months ago, I didn't get a chance to talk about it. But finally talking about it. I ordered crab wonton and Lobster Macadamia Roll. On my yelp review from 6 years ago (Laguna Beach), I talked about how great the Lobster Macadamia Roll were. It was sooo delicious. At this location, they never disappointed me one bit. Soooo good. My husband and I had our rehearsal dinner here and we are so grateful. Beforehand we were in contact with Paige and Carrie who were both extremely kind and accommodating. Day of, everything was spectacular. I felt bad that we had a large party, allergy restrictions and several kids in the party. Food was ready upon arrival for our kids. All the food was AMAZING, we had a set menu for our guests. Carrie and Paige recommended the best items. On top of amazing food we had attentive staff who were so thoughtful. Great spot for happy hour. I enjoyed two vodka-based cocktails, the Starfish Cooler and the Zen Tea, while friends enjoyed other cocktails, including the whiskey cocktails. The drinks are half-off at happy hour! For food, there's a big happy hour (called Opium Hour) menu and we ordered 6 items among the 4 of us. The beef banh mi sliders and Korean tacos came out first. Both dishes had heaping amounts of cabbage. I really enjoyed the slider, but didn't try the Korean tacos. Friends tried the calamari and weren't sure about the Korean-inspired sauces to go with it, but eventually got used to them. You know how some of the best sushi restaurants are in strip malls? When one thinks of dining out they typically don't think to go to a strip mall for a date or nice dinner (unless it's sushi). Well, this isn't sushi (although they do have some killer rolls) but it's absolutely worth taking a date, friends, or going solo for a fun dining experience that you'll forget you're in a strip mall with a grocery store in the same parking lot. The vibe feels a bit like Tao in Las Vegas with it's darker ambiance and moody vibes. The decor feels upscale. The bar has TV's (yes, you can catch the game) but if you're on a date it sets a good vibe and the lighting is perfect for it. Now let's talk about the food. I'm not into coconut rice but they're known for it and I highly recommend you order it (you can also order it as a side dish). The Korean tacos to start with are great although they do have a kick to them so be aware. You can also add a little coconut rice to them to tone it down and get that hint of sweetness. I love their ahi tuna salad with wasabi dressing and the chocolate chip bread pudding.
