I was in Lansing for the week due to the bar exam, and I stumbled upon this place while searching on Yelp for "lunch". My family and I were staying at an Airbnb nearby, so we weren't familiar with the area and were getting tired of having Panera and Blaze Pizza. Lol Enter The Soup Spoon Cafe. Let me start by saying that the customer service at this place is TOP NOTCH. The day I placed our lunch order, Lansing had been hit with a pretty bad ice storm and everything was pretty much closed. I had attempted to take my kids to the nearby kids museum and then to the state Capitol for some sightseeing and adventures, but they were all CLOSED and my kids were so bummed. I knew the cure to make everyone happy was a big, warm, delicious meal to fill our bellies. We made a pit stop to Five & Below for toys, and I called my order in. First of all - the lady who took my order was SO NICE. My son was in the middle of having a huge meltdown at Five & Below, and she waited patiently while I tried to wrangle him up, look over the menu, and relay our order to her. I think I even apologized a couple times for being so chaotic, and she replied, "No worries - take your time! I'm here when you're ready." Just so kind! We ordered and made the 5 mins drive over - the food was ready the moment I walked in! I wished we could have stayed because the ambience was so cozy, warm, and welcoming. A man with glasses and wearing a blazer handed my order to me, and we chatted a bit. I told him we were visiting because of the exam, and he was SO EXCITED for me being done that he offered to set reservations for me and my family that evening. That's how nice these people are - I'm telling you, you need to visit. Ok - but back to the food. We ordered the Naan Pizza for my kids to share, my husband had the Tuna Melt, I had the Black & Blue Wrap and we shared the Mediterranean Salad. The moment I put the bag in the car, my daughter said, "Wow - the food smells so yummy!" And IT WAS. The tuna melt has this amazing kick to it and the marbled rye bread was a nice touch. The beef tenderloin in the Black & Blue were seasoned just right and cooked perfectly. The portions were huge, so me and my husband shared our entrees so we could try each one. The salad was HUGE and so crisp and delicious. You really can't go wrong with anything you choose on their menu - everything looks phenomenal. Been there twice for brunch now and wish I had gone sooner!! Food is delicious and reasonably priced, staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is great! Even when it's packed, you can still hear each other to talk, so the only drawback to this place is that they are closed on Sundays--but if it helps them keep awesome staff members then it's totally worth it. Beyond incredible! Thank goodness my business friend got us reservations. The place is incredible. Don't be fooled by the exterior or the name. The place is 5 stars all the way. The food selection is beautiful, and every dish was positively gorgeous. We had the Walleye with wild rice and braised greens and it was fabulous. Not sure why anyone likes this place. The atmosphere is awful, the service is slow and inattentive, and the food is not good at all. My chicken was tough and not well seasoned. Spinach was gritty and bland. All of the plating was sloppy and uninspired. One of my dining companions took about three bites of their dish before abandoning it. The bill was $70 for three people--no alcohol, apps, or dessert. Overrated and overpriced for sure. Obviously based on the name, their soups are the best things on the menu. French onion soup is my favorite and I know I will get a good one here. He sandwiches are also good, and a soup and sandwich is the perfect lunch. I normally go for something g different, but I got the Cubans this time and was slightly disappointed. It wasn't that the sandwich was bad, it was just not a traditional Cubano which was what I was looking for. Service was a bit rushed, but they were also crazy busy. This lansing staple offers good food that is reliable and tasty. I've been a dozen plus times over the last couple of years and it always delivers big portions and tasty food. It isn't the most elevated of a dinning experience - don't expect surprises but if you go in wanting comfort food you'll be happy. You can make reservations online and if you're going in during the lunch hour, I would suggest planning ahead. There are a lot of things I really like about The Soup Spoon....and a few I wish were better. First, the ambiance is great! It's a nice place to have a celebration, chat with a friend, or grab a coffee and dessert. However, there is usually a wait during peak times and nowhere to be out of the way while waiting. Unfortunately this leads to hovering near the door and stepping out of the way every few minutes. Second, the menu has great variety and options. The flavors are spot on but the execution could use improvement. I had a salmon wrap, and while the mustard caper sauce is excellent, it was only in a very small portion. If the vegetables were mixed in the sauce, it would be consistent. Both of our soups were flavored well, but they had reduced to a thick consistency. Our last course was dessert. I found the flourless chocolate torte to have an amazing texture! It was definitely made with love. Again, my disappointment was with execution. the garnish appeared to be Hershey's syrup and store-bought whipped cream. However, a homemade salted caramel sauce or raspberry coulis would tweak it just enough to put it in the realm of glorious. I have noticed the love they put into their menu, but there are small changes that would make it better. Gary and I absolutely love the Soup Spoon Cafe. When we're craving something homemade, authentic and special, we make the drive! The soup is obviously to die for.
