This is actually a strong 4.5 so let's get that out of the gate. Rounding up to 5 for good measure.I had no idea this place even existed but stumbled across it on a web search. I was interested in trying it both for the good reviews and for the fact that they offered a smoked sliced rib eye which is not something you see in a BBQ joint all that often. This is a place you are not going to notice driving down the street. It is almost in the alley behind a beer tasting room. You enter next to their massive gas-powered smoker, and the smoke smells right.As we typically do, we tried a selection of the meats and we got a side of smoked mac and cheese. Unfortunately they were out of ribs.The smoked turkey was phenomenal. Like none we have had before. The owner informed us that Old Bay Hot Sauce was in the rub. I didn't taste Old Bay but whatever--I just tasted something really good. Didn't need any BBQ sauce.The sliced smoked rib eye was also delicious. Juicy, tender and with a yummy jus, I would come back just for this. Cooked a perfect medium rare. This is truly worth the trip.Brisket is a winner and pairs well with their homemade smoky apple BBQ sauce. The brisket is moist and flavorful.Pulled pork is solid and is as good as any in town. Goes well with the homemade South Carolina style smoky mustard sauce.Only major stumble on the meats is the chicken. It's flavorful but a little overdone. We would try it again though since we suspect this was simply a cooking error and not the norm given how good the rest was.Smoked mac and cheese was fine although no real sense of smoke that we noticed and the cheese was just a little loose. It was still very good.Everything is homemade. No food service rubs or sauces here. You can taste the difference. This is worth the trip and we will be back often, I suspect.With Buz and Ned having pulled out of the Boulevard and ZZQ being incredibly overrated and a repeated let-down, this is THE spot for BBQ in Scott's Addition. Smohk's up against some tough competition being just down the block from ZZQ, but they definitely hold their own! I ended up going with the "Wild, wild, west" brisket sandwich. ***A strong 4.25If you blink you could miss this place. It's a cool, rustic little smoke joint tucked away in an alley of sorts. I turned over a stone and found this place. I hit the door and already I could smell smokey meat perfume through my kn95. Roby greeted me and got me set up with my plate. He was friendly and a cool guy to speak with. It turns out this was his establishment, right on. Since it was my first time I went the classic route: a large pulled pork sandwich w/ smokey Apple bbq sauce, potato chips and a cup of the famed brunswick stew. Everything was fantastic. The brunswick stew was very unique, as I'd not had a brunswick stew with what seemed to be a vinegar addition and it worked very well. I look forward to trying more from this place soon! More...

I had the pleasure to enjoy Smohk BBQ at a tailgate party at the VT/UVA game this weekend. Let me tell you something! RUN TO THIS PLACE! !!!! I love BBQ, have been to some of the best places in Texas---Franklins, Terry Blacks, Salt Lick, and this place IS THE DEAL!!! We had ribs, brisket, wings, pulled pork, sides and each item gets a 5 star rating from me. As BBQ places go, this place needs work.. growing up in Va all my life.. No self respecting BBQ person would ever put BBQ sauce in Brunswick Stew. . Not sure who was giving out  awards that day but they were way off.. the BBQ sauce is very overpowering and drowns out the corn, potato's and other ingredients to where you feel like you are just east BBQ from the bottle.  BBQ bowls-- ordered 4 different ones to go order and this was a bad idea.. First off they forgot the BBQ sauce for each bowl... then the portions were small compared to the price, the sweet potato's were under cooked.  Rice was rice. BBQ pork was average. The serve seems very disorganized and confused, no wonder they forgot the BBQ for the entire bowls that were ordered.. Overall very disappointing. If you are going to deliver small , under cooked portions of food, at least make your customer service the bright spot. Epic fail in both areas.Again- who puts BBQ sauce in Brunswick stew what a shame.Save your money and go down the road to the REAL BBQ spot in Scotts Addition.... More...

I've been wanting to try this place for a while and I'm so glad it was open today! Boyfriend and I had been craving BBQ and Smohk did not disappoint. It's not on the menu but you can order al le carte. We did 1/2 lb of brisket and 1/2 lb pulled pork. I think the brisket may have slightly been better but both were delicious! Juicy, smoky and great flavor. We also got a side of baked beans and coleslaw. The slaw was basic, I wouldn't order again (but I'm not a big slaw person unless it's vinegar based). But I was surprised by the beans! I always expect restaurant baked beans to be like canned beans in terms of taste and consistency, but these were far from anything canned. You could tell it was homemade. Oh and the sauces  my favorite was the XXX. It was spicy but not overwhelming. And the mustard and vinegar one were really good too! All in all, I'd highly recommend. Most people miss it unless they're going to the brewery next door, which is also awesome as far as beer and customer service. Anyway, we saw a few groups sof people wander into the brewery looking for the restaurant... just keep going through the biergarten. I ordered the sliders so I could try 3 of the meats, unfortunately they were out of the ribeye but that happens, it was later in the day and a Monday. Everything I had was great though, pulled chicken, pork and the brisket. I particularly enjoyed the brisket and my colleague went back for a second order to go on brisket AND ribs. The sauces were all good and a great compliment to the meat as they give them to you on the side to add yourself in the amount you prefer. Buns/rolls were good as well as the beans. Probably can't go wrong but I haven't tried everything. I'll be back whenever I'm in RVA though. Fantastic food!!! I had the the half rack of ribs with Mac-n-Cheese along with the Ribeye sandwich and sweet potatoes!! A lot of food yes, but so worth it! ! Tried the horseradish sauce and BBQ Apple Sauce and both are very delicious! Ribs were tender with a good smoke flavor with a tasty rub that complimented the BBQ sauce very well!! The ribeye sandwich is a home run for Smohk and was such a treat because you never see it on menu and the taste was outrageous!! These folks at Smohk are dialed in with their flavor profile(s) and care about the product you’re going to eat! The owner Roby sat down with me while I ate and we had a great conversation about the business, flavors/ingredients and the new edition coming very soon — A NEW SMOKER!!! I highly recommend trying the ribeye sandwich and get some different sauces for a unique flavor! I will return to try the Award Winning Brunswick Stew and Brisket! This joint is a great find and yes it’s an obscure restaurant location on the backside of the Strangeways Brewery Building located in the historic Scott’s Addition neighborhood. Delicious! My mom had the pulled pork, green beans and cole slaw. I had the chicken, baked beans and collards. The order was ready quickly and they were very friendly. Drove to Richmond for the day and we were looking for popular bbq spots in the area open for dine-in. We ended up coming here per Yelp's recommendation. It was a bit tricky to find this place as it was located further back from the street. We parked on the street since the private lot was transformed into outdoor seating. The interior was small but cozy. There was a large table off to side that comfortably seated my party of 6. You order at the register first then the order is brought out to you. The service was quick and friendly! I ordered the Ribeye Sandwich with the Smoky Apple BBQ sauce and a bag of chips that was included.All in all, it was a solid ribeye sandwich! We ordered for a party of 24 and picked up the pork, brisket, potato salad, Brunswick stew, and sauces at 1 PM. Â Everything was properly packaged and none spilled on the way home. Â When we arrived our order was being prepared and we left with it about 1:15 PM. Â Robi was overseeing our order and did an exception job. Â Both barbecues were wonderful. It was not too spicy and those who wanted spice (like me) were able to add spice (lot easier than trying to remove it like some would want to do to barbecue from other restaurants!). Â I especially liked the mustard sauce. Â Being from Georgia, we're the local barbecue was mustard based, I appreciated that sauce. The XXX sauce was really spicy and I enjoyed it as well. We stopped here on our way home from VB...always trying to support local.  Out of the way, all about the food space!  The brisket was fantastic with plenty of bark! !  Great portions in the sandwich and the bowl(grits, mac n cheese and beans were all yummy) The ribs were wonderful, so much tender meat and little bone!  The Sirloin was out of this world...smokiness, tender and heaven!  The sauces always make or break..and these made!  We are a divided family, Smokey Apple BBQ was fantastic...but I mixed it with the Carolina Vinegar and I wanted to take it all home!!!! This spot is right next to an awesome brewery and we kept smelling the enticing scent of smoked meat while we were trying to drink our beers in peace. We finally relented and boy are we glad we did. We were able to place an order for pickup and grab it within 15 minutes. The pork was phenomenal and the collard greens were absolutely to die for. The Mac and cheese was good though not the very best I've ever had (a little dry) and while I was more enamored with the honey mustard bbq sauce, my husband quite enjoyed the regular old red sauce. Ok, so we were going to try out this other, but they couldn't seat us for more than an hour. Instead of waiting we looked around.
