It took 4 1/2 months to get plans and then the plans were poorly drawn and we couldn’t get a permit with them. He wanted a lot of money to make changes. The plans he gave our engineer to do structural with were not even in the ball park accurate. We had to have the plans redrawn and he would t refund any of our money. More...

I gave this customer more than half off, and it included he guest house, full panoramas of every room and I let them make as many changes as they wanted to the design. Hence the reason is, it took as long as long as it did. When the design was all finished, she hired her brother-in-law to do the structural engineering. He said he was afraid to do it. He mentioned he had always had others to check his work and didn't want the liability if something went wrong. Bev expected me to do the structural for the price of the design permit set I had quoted her for. When I tried to explain that that was not part of our agreement, or within my scope of services and legally I could not. She became impossible to please and kept insisting I do the structural for free. I regret this as Bev refused to do my taxes afterwards and messed them up badly, letting her daughter, who is not a bookkeeper, do my books before filing my taxes. I learned my lesson to never mix business with business, as it can become a conflict of interest.

Looking on-line to find a draftsman to help me acquire a permit from Cottonwood Heights and then make my ugly little house beautiful seemed like a daunting task, but with Shawn Knowlens’ help, I am on my way!
I tore the house down to the 2x4s, changed 3 small bedrooms into a master bedroom suite and a guest room, added a garage and expanded the downstairs bathroom.
Shawn’s cognitive flexibility enabled me to create the look I wanted staying within the cost and building code parameters. The 3D renderings made the rooms come alive !
He also was my spokesman for the permit changes that the city did not seem to be able to comprehend.
If you are looking for a draftsman who will listen to you, yet add some very creative additions to your plan, Shawn is your man. He also was reasonably priced and very responsive to my many texts.

Laurie was a great customer and I wish all customers were as gracious and design savvy as she is. She really should be an interior and exterior designer. I can't wait to see her finished home. She has sent me pictures and what she has sent is incredible. She picked out all the finishes and appliances and they are amazing. I plan to show them on my / our website portfolios.
