I don't normally like to give a poor review due to service, but it was ridiculous. We were initially one of 2 groups seated, and it took one hour for the food to come out. I also suspect our waitress is normally the hostess due to her lack of experience? And for some reason, she couldn't remember who we were (even though we were the 2nd party to be seated). She asked if we'd already ordered (even though we had), and then she told us a dish we hadn't ordered was sold out. I saw two parties leave in frustration due to the wait. I think the kitchen was backed up because of to-go orders, but what about the people physically sitting in your dining room? I'd give this place 2 stars, but I did like the food and service on a previous visit. I didn't care for the chicken biscuit on this visit, I felt like it needed honey or a sauce and the flavors were one note. It's a shame service was so poor, I'm not sure I'd want to take the chance and visit again. Food is worth trying, just be prepared for a hit or miss on service and speed! More...

My partner and I have been anticipating our visit here since we live down the street.. As we walked in on a slow Saturday morning, the server completely ignored us with no greeting (she wasn't occupied). So we sat ourselves at the patio then waited over 15 mins until we decided to walk out. The server just passing us numerous times but couldn't get a single greeting, "I'll be with you in a second" or apologies that we were just waiting and not being acknowledged. If you're going to serve southern comfort dishes, southern hospitality should be top priority. I'm not the type to give negative reviews but my partner being a former server for years and we visit the south frequently to know what great service and hospitality is, this server ruined our experience. Decided to eat here last night with my bf. He wanted some southern food and we found this place that was less than a 5 minute drive from us so we decided to try it. We ordered some appetizers: red and bread and a thick piece of bacon and for our entree we had the meatloaf and sticky bones (baby back ribs). I am going to say that everything we ordered was good, but everything was heavy on the salt. I mean everything. I like salt but there moments were it was just to much for me and I had to stop to drink some water. When we ordered the reds and bread we didn't notice the saltiness until we ran out of bread. The only thing I don't think was salty were my ribs and rice. Oh btw the chorizo rice was crispy and delicious . It was a good place and chill vibe and the waitress was really nice. If the dishes we ordered were less salty this would have gotten 5 stars. More...

Came in hungry and left very happy. The bacon appetizer is a big slab of pork belly that is about the most delicious thing you can eat. Great value for the price. The sticky bones were delicious; perfect flavor combination of Smokey and sweet. That dish comes with a perfect compliment watermelon salad and big portion of chorizo rice that was salty and delicious to compliment the Smokey sweet pork perfectly. The tri tip dip was incredible too. The horseradish was balanced out with the brown sauce to give it incredible flavor. Nice back patio. Great food at great prices. This will now be in my regular rotation. Sorry I waited so long to try it. More...

We live on the other side of Lb but our friends live across the street (lucky B's) haha anyways we got the sticky Bones and the Mucho Gusto BLT. The baby back ribs with pineapple salsa and chorizo rice was delicious. The BLT was probably the best BLT I've ever had in my life. I also tried the Jalepeno ranch and even that was amazing. A lot of locals comment about this spot. I thought it was just another bbq spot... it was not just another bbq spot.AMBIANCE:Parking: Street parking and neighborhood parking can get extremely packed. Be mindful of any festivals or events going on.Seating: Inside seating and patio seating. There's bar seating and group seating, great for about 100 people.Feels: You're on the charming street of 4th Street. Sometimes weekends there are events with vendors on the side and live music. The spot itself is pretty nice. I dig the country vibes as the outdoor patio seating felt like a being in a barn. Great place for a food adventure or doing catering orders.FOOD:Wings (Recommend)A good go-to order. The wings were well cooked. The meat was juicy and the outside was savory seasoned topped with a good crispy. The potatoes served on the side were served hot and the outer skin also had another good crisp too.St. Louis Ribs (Recommend)Served with chili beans and thin smoked asparagus. The ribs were delicious! Thick cuts, juicy, and seasoned savoriness with every bite. They had nearly 30 other sauces which were great to explore with! Ain't nuthin shady about Shady Grove Foods except maybe the name! Not sure where the name is reference from, but father and son, David and Dennis Robicheau found a home to offer their southern hospitality at the former Restauration along 4th Street's Retro Row. I've heard about their catering service for a while, but never had the chance to try the food until its grand opening on 8/26/22. My friend and I arrived around 8:30pm, and were luckily one of the last parties to get seated. There are a couple counters as soon as you enter with a few tables to grab drinks and eat casually. We sat in the back patio with plenty more tables. For drinks, they currently have soft drinks, beer and wine. They supply local brews as well like Ten Mile and Trademark.Red & Bread ($15): shrimp in creole tomato-based sauce served with Gusto bread for dipping. There were about 5 pieces of nicely cooked shrimp, but I wasn't blown away by the sauce and it didn't have a kick that I expected. However, iykyk Gusto bread is bomb and is great with any sauce. Fried Rib Tips ($10): rubbed in signature spices, smoked over red oak and then fried. To finish, they're tossed in house made bbq sauce and topped on crispy, rosemary Parmesan potatoes. For all this love and work, the price point is a bit surprising though appreciated! I've never had fried rib tips and it was delicious, crispy and not greasy! The potatoes served as great dippers for the creole red sauce too.Sticky Bones ($18): 1/2 rack of red oak smoked baby back ribs glazed with house made savory, ginger and caramel sauce. It also came with grilled asparagus and chorizo rice. The subtle pineapple salsa was a head nod to Thai flavors of fish sauce and spices. My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed all the combinations of this dish! Our server was on it and helpful. Although they were out of a few items, they seemed prepared for the grand opening overall. The food took a few minutes longer than anticipated, but it was well worth the wait. Their recipes are unique and I haven't had bbq quite like their style. Happy they're here to add another flare to the LB food scene! More...

Shady Grove Foods has been around for a number of years as a catering company, but now they have a restaurant in Long Beach! They are located on 4th Street, between Temple and Molino. This little stretch of 4th is also home to Gusto Bread, Coffee Drunk, Pippi + Lola Plants....and more. We decided to try out their newly opened restaurant for dinner...The place is laid back and casual, with a very friendly vibe. We were greeted and seated immediately. They specialize in BBQ, not the slathered on sweet sauce type, but rather their own proprietary rub seasoning (spice level = ). We started with their famous Bourbon Bacon slice for an appetizer, which we shared. Mmmm very tasty! This is a big, thick slice of bacon! The flavor was amazing!I ordered the half rack of St. Louis ribs, served with asparagus and Hobo beans. The ribs were meaty and perfectly cooked...tender, falling off the bone. Asparagus was perfect, roasted with a nice crispness. The Hobo beans were delicious, a wonderful melange of flavors that makes the unique and special! My husband ordered the Tri Tip sandwich and reported that it was very good. What he really loved were the Rosemary Potatoes...perfectly crispy and deliciously seasoned ( tried them and agree ).We were pleased to see that they serve local brewery, #TenMileBrewery, beers....delicious!Wine selection is still evolving and they are working out some new operation kinks...but they are 4+ stars right now, well on their way to 5 stars!Serving size is quite large, we took to-go boxes home. Just a lot of barbecue-adjacent food. Think American cajun food but with Mexican ingredients, like the chorizo rice which subbed for jambalaya. I don't know if the concept really worked for me but idk maybe they come up with some really compelling fusion dishes in the future. Like camarones a la diabla po-boys, ancho posole cornbread fritters, idk stuff like that. The bad:Red and bread. Terrible dish. Burned the shit out of my mouth and doesn't really make any sense from a dining perspective. Too saucy, too little bread, the shrimp seem out of place. I feel like I've seen Shady Grove at several beer festivals around Long Beach in the past few years, but I had generally figured food at festivals is overpriced, and usually ate in advance so I had more time to drink beer! A couple weeks ago, though, at the LB Homebrew festival (which was a lot of fun), I happened to not be hungry until after I was at the festival, so I paid what I thought was the you're-at-a-festival-priced $17 for a tri-tip sandwich (and side), and was *absolutely* proven wrong about that. Though I will say, I'm glad I decided to get food when I did - the only downside of super-fresh bbq like this, an hour into the festival, they were already selling out of things, and I think the tri-tip sold out like 3 people behind me! Thank goodness I got in line in time, because it was *excellent*! First off, just calling it "tri-tip" is underselling how great their bbq is - probably the best tri-tip I've had. Certainly the *smokiest* tri-tip I've had, probably the most tender, easiest to eat in a sandwich tri-tip, too. Great sandwich bread, perfect sauces too. They had a few sides that all looked great, but I went with the coleslaw, so I can say they also have great coleslaw. I'd *happily* pay $17 for their sandwich - *especially* at an unlimited tasting beer festival (which is convenient for me, since they seem to be at a lot of them!) And I'd love to try their other sides, but honestly, I'd probably just keep getting that coleslaw.Actually, one bonus tip that made the already-great coleslaw even better: one of the other sandwiches had a spicy pickled purple "slaw", I asked if I could have a bit of it on my coleslaw, which I'd strongly recommend. Funny enough, at the beginning of the pandemic, while everyone else was baking sourdough (or trying to), the one thing I randomly got excited about was spicy quick-pickling things, now I always have spicy pickled cabbage in my fridge. Probably the *only* thing where my comparison is what I make at home for myself - I think I still like mine slightly more, but theirs is great, too, and if you like spicy pickled things like I do, the perfect complement for the slaw! (And I'll tell you what I definitely *don't* have at home, is perfectly smoked bbq tri-tip, which it goes great with!)I'll also say, the major *benefit* of fresh bbq like this (I mean, other than that it's delicious), there was a huge line right up until they sold out of everything, but they absolutely *cranked* through sandwiches (everything's cooked in big batches, they just need to slice it), so it didn't take nearly as long as I was worried it would! Which was good, since I had a lot of beer to try! More...
