I absolutely love this place. It has grown so much over the years and it's no wonder because the pizza is so good. You can get thin by the slice or their amazing deep dish which takes 45 min but is well worth the wait. I've never been able to get deep dish as good anywhere else. The crust is so fluffy and crispy, not dense at all like you would think. You won't find a place with an atmosphere like this anywhere else. We had Satchel's cater our daughter's wedding reception. It was fantastic!!! Satchel said that everybody loves pizza and it would be great. He was right. If I could, I'd rate this a 4.5. The pizza is thin and crunchy, and choice of toppings is great, including a local sausage. But the sauce, while good, is not great, so the pizza is a solid 4 overall. But the casual but fun ambience, service, and quality of salads, home brewed sodas, and desserts all rate a 5. My wife and I visited Satchel's Pizza for dinner during a recent stop in Gainesville. We ordered a medium Pizza with Local Sausage, Ricotta, Roasted Red Peppers, and Mushrooms. The crust was very crisp and covered in delicious toppings: seasoned crumbly sausage, creamy ricotta, tender tangy red pepper and juicy mushrooms. Overall it was a quality flavorful pizza. I love Lightning Salvage. I remember when it was added to Satchel's back in the day. I loved wandering around in the darkened room looking at all the crazy stuff. They even used to have a table of free stuff. I remember finding some very cool things on that table.When I did recruiting activities, I always made sure Satchel's and Lightning Salvage were included in our activities.Lightning Salvage now looks grown up. LIke it's figured out what it is and what it wanted to be. It went from a slightly dingy but funky room to an all-in-one bar, lounge, and place to eat. I like ordering my pizza at Satchel's but sitting in Lightning Salvage with it's super cool table tops that give me such nostalgia. I love looking at all the things in the shop area (why, yes, I do have miniature glow in the dark catto figure sitting on my desk at work that I bought at Lightning Salvage). LS is an inspiring place. Satchel's is too. That whole place makes me feel good. I don't know if the people who work there walk the place and infuse it with good juju, but being there feels like home if home were cool and funky and covered in art of all kinds. Above all, great pizza! Our server was patient and knowledgeable. this could pass as the original Mello-shroom diner; a hippy theme pizzeria made by hand with good ingredients. I had a calzone that was awesome, but the pizza won the prize. WIfe and daughter ordered 4 toppings on a medium while my vegan s-i-l ordered a very special pizza (that I woudn;t dare eat)... he absolutely loved it; just as the rest of us loved the other one. Now that i know the food is good, we'll come back for the theme. I saw a couple of tables outside and even inside a VW Bus. We had my wedding rehearsal dinner here and it was a complete success. We had like 8 kids there, and they said it was the best restaurant they had ever been to. They played the WHOLE TIME except when it was time to eat.Everyone loved the outdoor space, and it was even covered for the rain. What else is there to say about Satchels. There pizza is to die for. Everything is so fresh , so don't be in a hurry. There salads are unbelievable. Great seating indoor and outside. This is a Gainesville staple that my friends and I used to visit often while we attended UF over a decade ago. It's comforting to find out that it's as consistent as it was during our school days, when we had a chance to revisit. This place was hipster before it was popular. With amazing decor, a hollowed our VW van outside, and plenty of old car bench seats for waiting, this place is quite unique. They are known for their pizza, specifically, their deep dish. It's not a traditional Chicago style deep dish, more of a thick pan pizza. Definitely brings back nostalgia. The deep dish does take about 40 minutes to cook upon ordering, so patience is needed. My coworker in California went to college here in Gainesville and recommended Satchel's as a place to eat. I'm in town through the weekend and decided to dine at Satchel's on my first night here. I love the unique ambiance at this place. My server explained the menu and recommended the salad which was delicious. She also explained to me that they make they're own soft drinks too. So I enjoyed a root beer with a salad and a slice of pizza. A very nice meal for $20. The salad was enough for 2 people. My only disappointment was the Cash Only policy. Who carries cash anymore? Ambiance is great, staff is friendly, beer is hoppy, pizza is good. The pizza actually burned and cut the roof of my mouth that took me days to recover from, so no matter how hungry, let the pizza cool for a minute or two.
