So I went in a few days ago and was unhappy with my hair, but I think there were a lot of things that was accidentally miscommunicated. I went in again today, and Erin fixed my hair (free of charge) and it looks absolutely amazing. The roots are blended perfectly, and my root touch up looks so perfect and it is blended seamlessly. She also gave me a free blow out, which she absolutely did not need to, but she did and my hair just looks so great! I am more than happy with it.I also did the conditioning treatment, which revitalized my dead hair. Overall, I would highly recommend Salon J and especially Erin. I have always loved her haircuts, and I'm now happy that I can confidently endorse her hair dyeing and root touch ups as well. I used to go to New York to get my hair done, and my only regret is that I didn't go to Erin earlier. I'll miss her and amazing hair cutting/dyeing! More...

Small salon in downtown New Haven. Only six stations but full service offering. Regular place for haircut at average prices. Never tried facial hair trim here. No male hairdressers as I am aware. Discounted prices with student ID. Paid parking along the street. There is also parking in a parking garage just before the Salon J, on the left hand side of the one-way road. They recently adjusted their payment system where you can now only tip your hairdresser in cash. More...

I went here because a previous stylist from another salon gave me the worst hair cut.  Samantha evened everything out but had to take another inch to inch and half off to fix it.  It looked much better but until my hair grows out more I'll be wearing a hat.  Thanks for the effort. More...

I very much enjoyed getting my hair cut by Bella over the last 1+ year as she is very detail oriented, experienced and accommodating. The eyebrow clip added a little bit of extra care that was well appreciated.  Not being much of a planner when it comes to hair cuts I enjoyed Salon J's customer service of fitting me in often the same day when I realized that my sides were slightly overlapping my ears as a sign that it must have been 5-6 weeks since the last treatment. I am here to sing praises about Jane! She was an incredibly kind, patient, and informative stylist.I walked in with medium-longish hair with not much to it, and I asked for a jaw-length haircut with bangs (which I've never rocked before). Jane made sure I knew everything about bangs (their pitfalls, their maintenance, etc) before I fully committed. She asked for pictures of what I wanted and she captured it perfectly. She asked me every step of the way if I was ok with what she was doing and did an awesome job layering, making sure I knew how the cut was going to look when it was dry. She did a FANTASTIC job!In the past, I've usually just gone to chain barbers like Super Cuts to get my hair cut, but with a brand new hairstyle, I figured I should go to a place with a little more expertise in this area and I made the right choice.Salon J was comfortable and hip. Great haircuts here -- I have long wavy hair that curls at the end and went into Salon J because I was looking to get a few inches taken off and my layers touched up. I had an appointment for 6 PM and was taken to the back within 5 minutes of my appointment time. She did a great job shampooing and listening to what I wanted. She was also patient when I asked her to take another inch off after she had started, which was super nice. The only reason I took a star off is because the prices are a tad steep ($50-$60 for a women's haircut). I'm used to paying around the same in Virginia near my parent's house, but that was for a stylist with over 20 years of experience. Overall, a great place to go for a haircut! Cannot comment on other services as I don't color my hair (not yet anyways...)Also, they have a discount for Yale students or employees at the hospital! I was mourning the loss of my hairdresser moving out of state, until I met Jane at salon J. I already knew she worked wonders with my guy friends, handsome fresh cuts every time. .. and finally went to see her myself. It's hard to find someone who knows how to take good care of color and a fun cut without feeling like you leave with a mom-do. Jane gets it. I am back to being an ashy blonde and full of rock star volume. After my second time there, I won't recommend folk to go anywhere else. Prices are super reasonable for a cut, color and blow out. The best place I found in New Haven for a chic little salon not just for women but they do great men's cuts and styling too! ! My friend told me to ask for Jane and I think he was right! In my opinion Jane is a wizard and I don't know how I'll find someone else that compares. I usually did the same hairstyle every time but she was able to provide great recommendations and the execution was flawless. Even as it grew out it looked good. I've since moved away from New Haven but the stylists I've found so far will cut it to look good at first but when it grows out sometimes the hair sticks out at weird angles. I also had Jane bleach and then color my hair silvery gray at one point and she did a wonderful job. I tried to post the pictures here on Yelp too but I don't know how to attach them to this review haha. On top of that she is full of life and so much fun to talk to!
