We found this place on the way home from a road trip and was looking for something close to the highway. The food was amazing, I had a chicken sandwich, the chicken was moist, not over cooked and the flavor & toppings paired well together. My husbands wrap was also enjoyable. I agree with the gentleman earlier that had the detailed exhortation on the lobster roll and their experience here! The lobster roll is super sparse on the lobster and not worth 30$ at all! The smash burger is normally fabulous but don't get it to go and be disappointed when you get back to work and it's over salted and didn't get to taste it while you were there and able to send it back. Also the ahi tuna bowl is hit and miss too! Sometimes it's great and other times it doesn't have cooked wontons and sparse dressing on the side and barely enough tuna but flavorful which is why I keep trying ! I hope the owners take ot all to heart and make some changes cuz Paso needs places like this but us locals who revisit plenty of times may give up if things don't get better! I was wandering around Paso Robles with a growing hunger and not knowing what was good around. I turned to Yelp and found this place just a block from the shop my wife was perusing. I got one look at the menu, and just had to get my hands, nay my mouth, on that lobster roll. So I fired up the map and headed that way. For those wandering around trying to find it like I did - it's on the corner and the big sign doesn't say Roots on Railroad. But that corner outdoor restaurant is the one your looking for. Apple Maps and the signage had me wandering around for a cool minute until I figured it out. Don't be like me. You can see it on the corner from that tea shop across the street where my wife also needed to stop. Ordering was easy. You walk up to the window, tell them what you want, and go find a place to eat outside. If I were to guess I'd say the bulk of the place's revenue comes from alcohol, bit that's a lot of restaurants these days. The menu was small, and I'm into that, but I did experience a little sticker shock when my bill for a kids cheeseburger, shrimp salad, and lobster roll was $80. Now I don't mind paying good money for food as long as I feel like I'm getting what I paid for. That's where it starts to come apart for me. First of of, the food is good. My son's burger was great, and my wife's salad was tasty. Do I feel like they were worth the price tag? No. I have friends who own restaurants, so I get that inflation has hit them too and prices are going up, but if I spend $80 in their steakhouse you can bet I just had a killer steak, a side, and an appetizer with truffle oil in it. Granted that's for one person and not three, but I did better than a burger and a salad. That's not the big disappointment though, that came when they brought out my lobster "roll". Now, I know I can lean toward a touch of snob when I order a food item like the giant sea spiders that are crab or lobster. They're expensive, so my expectations are pretty high. My dad is from a small island off the coast of Portugal, and I have grown up eating a lot of fresh caught seafood. I love it. To call this a lobster roll, however, is something bordering on deceptive. What was brought out to me was the BOTTOM HALF of a roll, cut lengthwise down the middle, with a less than generous portion of lobster carefully placed along the narrow crevice. There is more physical mass to an In-N-Out cheeseburger than there was to my $30 lobster rollette. Was the flavor good? Absolutely. It was tasty, but it was just so stinking small for what I paid. I've eaten at fancy French restaurants, ethnic cuisines I wouldn't dare try and pronounce, and all manner of great food from all over the world, and this was the first time I ever walked away hungry, and decently poorer for the privilege. Fortunately for me my son didn't finish his burger, so I helped him out there, and promptly filled the remaining space in my stomach with coffee from down the road. My review for Roots on Railroad wanted to be a four star. The staff was nice, the food tasted good, but that lobster roll just killed it for me. Just because it's a lobster doesn't make it inherently more valuable. You need quality and a balance of quantity too. See Sam's Chowder House in Halfmoon Bay as an example. More than twice as large, and three times the fresh lobster for the same price. For what I get there I don't frown at the check. All in all this is a great stop. Great little spot for a quick bite. Unfortunately the day we went it was over 100 degrees outside, but their tables in the back had misters so it wasn't too miserable. I got the fried chicken sandwich that comes with jalapeño slaw and cheddar cheese. The slaw gave the sandwich a nice spicy kick. The chicken was flavourful and juicy. The food was great! Everyone in my family was extremely satisfied with their food. There are a few parking stalls off the streer. The heaters in the outdoor area makes it possible to eat here in the freezing cold weather and there are even cute little kid picnic tables. There is also a comfy couch area you can sit in. Great spot to order food and they will deliver to the next door beer bar and wine bar. I had the veggie bean burger with fries. Friends had more fries and the pretzel. All was tasty but a little too salty. Good, quick service and super convenient, especially when it's nearly impossible to get reservations at many of the restaurants in town. This a jewel for a casual lunch. I've stopped two times and it has comfortable outdoor seating with good food that has enough variety. The owners take great care in their food prep and it shows in their delicious and unique burgers, sandwiches, salads, etc. This is a MUST stop in Paso Robles from a long drive. The vibe is comfortable with the seating, plants, and nice landscaping. Bottom line, they pay attention to the details to make the dining experience positive. I wish I had something like this in my city. I would eat here regularly and skip the other restaurants and stress. Parking is limited, but you can probably find some on the street and walk. So... The food here is fantastic! I really like the layout where you can order your food at one location and then order your drinks or another and then select from multiple seating locations outside. I think the food is a little bit expensive... However it's authentic and freshly made. I've gone back twice and I appreciate both the soft pretzels and the fries! The food is great but that's not what this is about - they have a fenced in area that you can sit with your kids and they can't escape! 10/10 would recommend. I've passed by this place a few times while in Paso and finally had to chance to try it. The ordering process was fairly easy as the menu was very straightforward. We ordered in the front and was given a beeper that would notify us when our food was ready for pick up. We walked towards the dining area and went to the bar to order our drinks as they were separate. Once we got our drinks, we found a table and right away a staff member wiped our table down immediately, even though it did not look dirty at all (much appreciated!). It didn't take too long for our beeper to go off. Let's cut to the chase with their burgers! Oh my goodness!!!! The buns were buttered and toasted, the patty had the perfect amount of seasoning and the tomatoes were to die for! The tomatoes were quartered and then roasted, just simply amazing! The fries were pretty average but that chipotle aioli sauce was key (full of flavor with a little kick at the end). The 8.0 Fries were awesome. Totally generous portions with lots of tinga and nacho cheese. Service was good. We then walked over to California Coast Beers to enjoy the meal. I ordered the red ale. Hmmm it was a very interesting experience! I enjoy the ambience... perfect for a very hot air hung breezy day the water mists we're on! Heavenly! The area where it is located - is a bit confusing but still not a big deal. The area where you order food then I'd you want a glass of beer need to go further down.. no biggie! Just a nice set up. Plenty of chairs and I can imagine the evenings would be a blast with the fire pit! The bathrooms very very clean! Impressive. Now.. the reason why 1 star down... the tri tip was very dry. Nah. Came out to PR for a quick day trip and stopped off here to grab a bite. Lobster roll looked appetizing so me and my buddy opted for that. What's great is you can order via a QR code from the bar we were at and they deliver right to your table! Order comes pretty quickly so that was a plus. At first look the roll is kinda small, for the price I paid I was hoping for a bigger sandwich but what the heck I dug in and tried it out. Taste is good, fresh and flavorful. Sandwich comes with fries as well, they kinda skimp out on the fries as well, but at least they taste good. Fun experience and good food in Paso Robles! Bartender was super cool, funny, and knowledgeable. You order and eat outdoors, which is just fitting for the town as it's so beautiful outside. We went when it was pretty hot but misters made it feel perfect. They have tons of beer and a crew wine options. The food is worth the price, and my lobster roll was packed with all the good stuff. So the Lobster rolls here are not cheap, but the sure are delicious. Big chunks of Lobster well made with delicious bread. They are all "MP" and in July of 2022 they were running $30 each. It comes with fries, which were pretty great as well. You do get a free kids meal per adult meal though, which is a nice surprise! The location is great, and it's right next to a beer garden with some good brews.We were up in the area doing some wine tasting and came here for dinner our first night. A great way to start the weekend and enjoy a delicious quick mean with kids!If the lobster rolls were a bit less, this would be an easy 5 stars. We ordered the lobster roll and it was a big thumbs up. Best lobster roll we've tasted. We also ordered the tuna poki bowl and that was ok. I just didn't like the wasabi taste but liked the chip that came with it. We were ordering a buttered pasta for our baby and they said free child menu item with an adult's order! Nice! It was a great atmosphere at the backyard but the food was pretty mid to be that expensive. The tri tip sandwhich was good but needed a little more bar b q sauce and the fries were dainty. We ordered a couple of Lobster rolls with fries. Chewy, fishy tasting and not even half of a tiny pacific lobster tail with some sort of lobster salad like tuna salad covering up the top to conceal the incredible small amount of actual lobster you get all for $30 +. Skip this place and never eat here its a rip off and its awful. We both got lobster rolls which were made all wrong like they had no idea how to make them. What they did do is split a tiny tail between our two rolls and hoped we wouldn't notice. We did. They conceal and hide the small amount of lobster you get with a tasteless I assume but couldn't tell exactly what it was lobster salad of some sort I've never seen before. The sandwich was overpriced tasteless and awful and it had shell in it still. I over heard the couple sitting next to us complain about how bad the burger was. I should have known better when you go to a place at prime time lunch hour and there's almost nobody there eating. Very dishonest and misleading place. Stay clear of this joint. More...

Just ordered their smash burger. Was almost $18. Ordered it using their app. It has an option to "no" items so I though it would have certain items that I did or select "no" on. I thought it would have pickles, jalapeños, and at least some sort of sauce. It was litterally a piece of meat, one sad tomato, a little lettuce and onions. Fun, casual spot with great food! This is a great place to come on a nice day, as all of the seating is outside / backyard style. There are a number of different seating options from bar seating, picnic tables with umbrellas, Adirondack chairs, and couches around fire pits / heaters. They also have large games like jenga and connect four. They also host trivia and have live music on certain days as well. Food: I got the chicken Schwarma which was quite large and delicious. Fiancé got the burger and fries. I sampled it and the burger was perfectly cooked and so flavorful. The fries were pretty good, but mostly reminded me of McDonald's fries. There is also a brewery in the back. Didn't try any of their beers, but it is a great combo to add to roots on railroad. Stumbled across this cute place while exploring downtown. Nice menu. Thoroughly enjoyed the shrimp roll salad. Fresh ingredients & fresh taste. The only drawback is the pricing, which could be a sign of the times. We spend $45 for my salad, a tri tip sandwich, iced tea & a diet soda. UPDATED:Owner reached out about the seating. Happy to see a owner so responsive to their guests. Will definitely be giving them another chance. The yummy food and the good beer list saved this review. Would of given a 1 star otherwise...Outdoor eating areas were nice if we would of been able to use the kids spot....Hours are posted that they close at 9pm...we arrived at 6:45. They had a nice fenced in area for the kids with a perfect sized kids table ( the adult table benches were really tippy for the little ones and not safe). We ordered our food ( group of 6 of us with the kids...kids meals ordered too) and got settled into the kids area only to get kicked out. We were told they were closing early because they were slow and we could not eat in that area. There were multiple other people eating, drinking, and also just getting there. We had asked if there was another small table to use for the kids or if we could move the table to another spot, but they wouldn't let us. We were able to find another area but felt very rushed by the staff to eat and leave. With the weather warming up and longer nights, this would of been a great spot for good food and beer. More...

Such a fun spot to grab a bite! It was a warm day and luckily they had their water misters going off on us so it helped us deal with the heat. We ordered off the QR code on the table and though the lobster roll looked amazing, went with the tri tip sandwich and fries. It was excellent, and I had the BBQ sauce on the side. A bit too much pickled onions and peppers for my taste, but the meat and bread were fresh. On our way to another site for lunch, we came across a cool area that included a brewery (Central coast beer co.) and a wine tasting room (Iron Oaks winery) that sat on either side of a large outdoor venue. We found the menu for Roots on Railroad inside the brewery, but also found a QR code that linked to a more extensive menu). The hubs and I opted to share the hot (spicy) fried chicken sandwich that came with French fries. We sat outside and enjoyed our wine from Iron Oaks as we waited. The food came pretty quickly, within 10 minutes I'd say. Our sandwich did not come with any utensils (we needed to borrow a knife from the winery in order to split our sandwich). The fries were over-salted, lukewarm and a bit 'limp.' The fried chicken in the sandwich had a nice coating and a quite good blend of spicy & sweet (from honey) flavor. I'd likely have given five stars were it not for the quality of the fries and lack of utensils. First time here. Lots of tables and areas to eat, drink and be merry.I am allergic to onions, so I always specify no onions. Got burger which was loaded with onions hiding under the melted cheese. Went back to window, line very long, decided to pick them off along with the onions on the salad. Nice server came by and asked if everything was OK. Hubby told him there were onions on all my food.
