Our family really enjoyed Bay Watch!  Extensive menu and reasonably priced.   Attentive and courteous waitstaff.  Very accommodating and they allowed substitutions. Downtown San Mateo is getting busier and busier but plenty of street parking (we go here at 9 am on Sunday morning Mother's Day).  Food came out piping hot and very generous portions.  Great value.  Harder and harder to find family style home cooking but this restaurant fits the bill. First time visit here. I heard Waffles in Bay Watch is a good choice so I ordered Belgian Waffle filled with Bacon and my friend ordered Masterpiece Omelettes. Waffle was one of the best waffle I had recently, crispy outside and good moisture inside as I heard. Omelettes is huge in portion with several style of meat and vegetable stuffings. They said Omelettes was 3 eggs but it seems to me more than 3 eggs. Maybe because it is the last Friday of the year, the restaurant is pretty much full at about 11:00 am. Great place for a traditional meal. If you want a simple, clean, feel-good breakfast (or lunch or brunch), this is a great place. No rush, no silly trends, no mystery fusion recipes. Just good, American breakfast food. In the past, I liked the the breakfast skillets (super hearty) but I recently tried a salad (Pecan Dijon) and it was amazingly delicious. Waffles tell the story.  Very good, crispy.  I'd say that I have eaten at a lot of breakfast places in the Bay.  So coffee and waffles are for me the litmus test.  You do a good job on those items and it has been proven that the rest of the menu should be worthwhile.  Here's why I am giving 5 Stars to Bay Watch.  The service is great.  I needed to leave the restaurant and pay my meter.  Jonathan the server asked me, "Do you need change?"  I didn't need change but I needed to hear that.  Jonathan deserves 5 Stars. Came here on 4th of July brunch and it was open! YAY! I ordered the masterpiece omelette and my husband ordered the hot link skillet. My omelette was alright, first they messed up my order but swapped it out for the correct order and it was well managed. However theres Salsa on the side and sour cream on the omelette which was not in the description... I was a bit bummed out about that. Bay Watch feels like part of our family. This was my pick for Mothers Day brunch as no one can match the turkey dill crepe. They gave all the moms that day carnations which was very sweet. They have always been nice to my toddler, giving him crayons to play with and a shorter straw to drink out a plastic cup. Small things like this help make mealtime go smooth. More...

Had come here before with co-workers and thought to bring my wife this time. Wait time- they said it'd be 15 mins - not bad - and sure enough, it was 15 minutes. Server, Jonathan waited on us immediately and he was very nice. You could see everyone hustling!! They have a sense of urgency yet they all remain pleasant and professional. My wife had a veggie omelet and I had the San Franciscan crepe - it was LEGIT!! Prices were reasonable too, which is nice. Overall, an excellent breakfast experience. I look forward to my next visit. The food is so good here!!! A hidden gem!! Was supposed to go to Ramen parlor in San Mateo but it was about to close for their midday break. This is on a Sunday afternoon around 1pm. Saw that this was the nearest brunch spot and we were starving so I called to see what the wait time would be for a party of 6. A gentleman named Alex answered the phone and said there's currently no wait time. Walked in Alex greeted us as the manager, asked was I the one calling 5 mins ago (yes), then seated us right away. That's great customer service right off the bat! The restaurant is packed with every seat in the place almost taken. Our server was very sweet and attentive. This is a hometown favorite! My husband and I have been eating here for almost 20 years. Your food comes fast and is super tasty. The wait staff are all friendly and knowledgeable, and their fun Hawaiian shirts add brightness to the overall vibe~ this is a fantastic place to bring your family. My personal favorite bite is the Eggs Benedict Florentine~ and you can choose how you'd like your spinach~ steamed, sautéed, or fresh. My hubby loves the Bacado Skillet, and the children's menu has plenty of fun options for tiny diners. I notice a lot of downtown professionals during the lunch hour~ again, it's so great how quickly food gets to the table. It's nice to sit and eat a hot meal~ and have the time to do that, even if you're taking a short lunch break! I've come to Bay Watch for years. I've enjoyed the food almost every time. The only down side with my breakfast meals here is I always have to send the toast back 1 or 2 times because it comes buttered instead of no butter as I request. Just a minor attention to detail issue on the service team (it may be because sometimes different folks bring the food out to the table and don't notice the no butter toast/busy.) Also, the coffee is terrible. (it always tastes off as if it is not brewed properly or there wasn't enough coffee put in the filter.)Sometimes there can be a rather long wait (especially on a weekend if you have a big group (4 people or more) because it is a popular spot for breakfast. The parking isn't great in the area because it is all street parking. It also gets rather noisy on the weekends simply because of how many people are in the restaurant. This is one of my go to breakfast places in San Mateo. The skillets are delicious (I love the avocado, tomato and bacon best), and there are a lot of great options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike, and the restaurant has  pretty quick service so even during busy times (weekend mornings), the tables turn around quickly and the waits aren't too bad and there is free coffee while you wait. It's sad to see that yelp has become a place to leave mostly negative comments. I find it funny that unintelligent people come on here and say that they feel "out of place" when they walk into a restaurant.  You walk into a restaurant to eat, not to scope around and check what age people are. Also how customers think they can ADD more to their meal and assume it's not going to be charged.. hmm?! I would consider making your own meal at home then. Not only bay watch servers.. ALL servers in the restaurant business bust their behinds and they get no respect for it. I applaud those who work the industry. Bay watch has been a go to for a few years now! Since my best friend and I were headed up to SF....we decided to stop into RESTAURANT BAY WATCH in downtown San Mateo for the most important meal of the day. ...Breakfast.  Anyone who knows me, knows I am down for breakfast any time of the day. I've been known to even cook breakfast, for dinner.  I LOVE breakfast.Once you walk into this coffee shop, you feel like your in a different world. It gives a very homey & personable vibe, the atmosphere & servers too. Which is really nice.  I like the fact that they serve breakfast all day.  The place is bustling with happy diners. The Hawaiian-shirt clad staff are so friendly. They have a board that lists their Daily Specials, so be sure to check it out. We both ordered the HUNGRY JACK BREAKFAST, which consists of (2) Pancakes, Macadamia Nut, Banana & Coconut and 2 Eggs (Over Easy) The pancakes were DELICIOUS!  The best pancakes E V E R. So light & fluffy. They also served WARM pancake syrup on the table. Oh YES...Unbelievable! We also ordered a side of Bacon (4 slices, extra crisp) to share, and a side of their House Potatoes (I was disappointed in the potatoes as I prefer hash browns).  The breakfast overall was a HUGE hit, we were both very satisfied.  Coffee was EXCELLENT as well. This might be a problem for me. Part of the mission statement for Baywatch is to make healthy meals. I ordered a Denver omelet. They solve my only problem with Denver omelets by making them with cheese, without you having to ask for them to add cheese to it.I'm eating it and the peppers are crisp and fresh and so are the onions. I'm not sure I like that. I want the vegitables well sauted, onions translucent soft and flavors blended.  It wasn't greasy enough for me I guess (the natural result of using butter or bacon grease to saute vegetables).But this is a place where they make one thing great. I've forgotten what it was because it's been a while since I've eaten here. I'll work my way through the menu and find it again.It's a dirty job,  but someone has to do it. More...

Love this place for brunch! Their pancakes are SO good and HUGE. We always end up ordering the macadamia nut/coconut pancakes and they taste like a piece of Hawaii. Just this past Sunday, I had the garden crepe and asked for some hollandaise on the side too. It came with toast and either hash browns/country potatoes. I chose the country potatoes and was glad I did. They chop them smaller than other brunch spots, but that's what them so good because some of the smaller pieces would end up crunchy. I scour Yelp for mentions of exceptionally good coffee and this place has it. Truly delicious flavorful coffee, smooth and mellow enough to drink black. Fair trade, organic, roasted just for the restaurant, all admirable things that don't matter a whit unless the coffee is TASTY and it is.
