Restaurant — Venus Spirits

I could not end this night without giving a unbelievable shout out, thank you and WOW to Venus Restaurant. You know how you make resos online and at the bottom it often says "notes" or "details" regarding your reservation? .... Well from my experience the most I've ever seen come of those "notes" is a "so we're celebrating a birthday? Happy bday!" It's nice! But tonight was a WHOLE level-up from that. I made a reservation at Venus a few weeks ago when my very best friend decided she thought we could give it a shot. You see, within 1yr a severe accident happened that turned her and her daughters life upside down. Now she has a specials needs child and because this is uncharted territory, we have not been out together for 2yrs (cuz 2020🙄 and then the accident). When I made our reservation for a special dinner night out with our two kids for a gift exchange, I mentioned in the comments that it was to celebrate her birthday (she turned 6 last week). I also then noted that this is her very first outing in 2yrs and that she has been in and out of Stanford Children's Hospital. Now you may wonder why I added this detail.... the reason was two fold!.... I was hoping that we'd get a table "child friendly" and also, in the event something occurred on her first outing, the staff (at least our server) would understand their quick exit. Needless to say I wasn't expecting much. Upon arriving we were seated and shortly after the owner of Venus arrived at our table and said "SO I hear we are celebrating a birthday. Both my friend and I were so confused. I honestly wasn't even putting 2 and 2 together. Then her daughter said "Me!!! It's mine!" to which I said "omg that's right I did write that in our reservation request!" And he said "I've got a little gift for you" and handed her a Venus gift bag with a gift inside. Both of us (moms) jaws were practically on the floor. Her daughter has had a year of weeks and weeks in and out of Stanford. Her life has taken such a turn. Where these little outings used to be so common, now are a thing of the past. This extra gesture from the owner meant EVERYTHING. I have always had a lovely experience there. Food is amazing and drinks are fabulous. The staff has always been great too. I just felt I needed to share this because this speaks such volumes. Great craft cocktails paired with a delicious small plates menu in a hip and relaxing part of Santa Cruz light years away from the typical beach town temptations of the boardwalk district and downtown. Venus virtually defines “organic craft distillery” on the Central Coast. The energy here ebbs and flows until evening, when it is pretty much like a bar or restaurant.
