We enjoyed a wonderful Mother’s Day brunch at Southbound! Our party of 9 was very impressed with the excellent service, delicious cocktails and stellar food. My husband is gluten-intolerant and usually has limited options, but that wasn’t the case here. We had a fantastic experience and will definitely be back. I was fortunate enough to venture into Southbound the other night for a beer and some light bar food. Their beer selection was amazing with local selections covering a variety of styles. The food was awesome, very creative and all delicious. We got the bread plate with a variety of house made breads that were all great. Head Chef Craig came out and talked with us for a bit. This was the best food we’ve tried in RVA, hands down. The chefs are creative with platting and the menu has the perfect amount of options. We had the wings (my fiancé literally was in food heaven), bread plate, soup/clam chowder ( best I’ve ever had and I’m from New England), half chicken with grits and greens and the burger with fries (BEST FRIES I’ve ever had). We recently moved back to Richmond after 20 years away, and had been spoiled by our past 5 years in the Portland, OR foodie scene. The chefs know what they are doing. The menu is not huge, so what is there is well done. Great atmosphere. May have been one of the best burgers in RVA! Tender, moist & savory. Amazing Wings, balanced in Flavor & Heat. Calamari was a hit with everyone minus the 6 year old, who declared the MAC & Cheese to be the best he ever had (he made a failed attempt to secure the recipe from our server). My girlfriend and I are new to the area, moving from Boston recently. With that, we decided on Southbound solely based on the number of stars it had on most review sites in a last minute night-out attempt. We were extremely pleased with what we found. The atmosphere was clean, inviting, well put together, the prices were very reasonable, and the staff friendly. Being a 'northerner' we decided to take a stab at their Southern offerings. I had the catfish with grits and coleslaw and she had the crab cakes with farro and spaghetti squash. Everything was fresh, cooked perfectly, and dish presentation was great. Their beer and wine selection was also excellent although my beer was a little cool, not cold (wouldn't take off for that considering it was probably refrigerated recently). Specifically, my girlfriend's crab cakes were sweet but not too sweet and she wished there was more farro and spaghetti squash because it was so good. The catfish batter was perfect. I usually withhold salt from my catfish because both the fillet and the batter gives off a salty taste, but this was perfectly balanced. Lastly, the sides were great; the grits were cooked just right and not runny and their hot-sauce butter was a great compliment to the whole dish. Thank you Southbound for introducing a couple of 20 somethings from Boston to great Southern fare. We will certainly be back in the future to try new dishes soon! More...

Great food! Great wine! Great service! Had three different apps, the pimento cheese (spicy & yummy!), the Oysters, and the pickled veggie plate! Try the bread plate and the smoked sausage with pickled whole grain mustard!!! Awesome flavors! Dinner we had the duck, the rockfish, the scallops and the shrimp tort. All cocked perfectly!
