Tom gives the best massages. Ever!

Reviewed on Facebook

2 December 2017

I have been neglectful not reviewing prior to this time.  I was working in La Jolla and traveling over 5 hours each way Sun-Thurs each week by plane for several months.  I started having shoulder problems and one Sunday night after arriving knew I was going to HAVE to see someone.  Fortunately, Tom got me in in a day or so and I can't explain the immediate relief.  I sit at a computer all day and besides the shoulder release, he was able to do a lot of release in the mid section of my back which made breathing so much easier.  Unfortunately, my contract ended in this area, and the only thing that could have made my visits better was if he had a clone in the Midwest or had I found him sooner..Don't hesitate if you are having issues; he's calm, gentle but gets the job done.  Unlike other places I have been, he will not try to sell you equipment, memberships, etc., etc.  Massage is what he does and he's pretty great.  Thanks for getting me back on the path to feeling well again! Today was the second time I was treated by Tom, and it was just as amazing as the time before. I have been getting massages pretty regularly the last 10 years. I have seen all kind of therapists, some great and some not so great... Tom's knowledge and skills in his craft are simply above and beyond the best massage I have ever experienced. I can truly say I walked out of there the last two times feeling like a completely different person. From someone who lives with chronic back pain this is huge. If you are thinking of getting a massage look no further than here.. you will not be disappointed! Thank you again Tom for relieving the pain I deal with regularly, can't wait until my next visit! Tom has an almost backwards approach to massage, and it's great! Do all other massage therapists have it all wrong? Hmmm. Tom starts out with you laying face up, and begins the massage on the face, head, and neck, which relaxes you and puts in exactly where you need to be for the rest of the message . The rest of Tom's message is spot on. He has a nice balance between strong hands and gentle touch. He checks in to make sure the pressure is just right. Thanks Tom! More...

I have been a client of Tom's for over 10 years. He is phenomenal. A true healer. He has a special quality that puts him ahead of every other massage therapist. I suffer from migraines and when the migraine medication, and the chiropractor don't help I can always count on Tom to massage it away. I have also had lots of other massages by others especially when traveling, and some of them have been quite good, but once they are done, you usually feel much the same after. I have never been able to find anyone else who can give such an excellent massage and actually break the knots and massage the tension away. More...

After suffering a traumatic injury to my shoulder that required surgical replacement of my upper humerus with a metal implant, followed by a lengthy period of physical therapy, I sought out a massage therapist to help with pain relief and to augment my physical therapy sessions. I found Tom listed as a provider approved by my insurance and I immediately noticed that he had a lot more experience than most of the other listed providers, so I decided to set up an appointment for an initial consultation. Making the appointment through the web site was quick and easy, and I heard from Tom shortly thereafter. During my first appointment I shared the details of my accident and surgery, and described where I was in terms of pain and recovery. Tom asked a lot of questions to determine my immediate needs and also discussed how massage therapy could be incorporated into my recovery plan.My first session with Tom provided immediate pain relief to specific areas in my back and shoulders that had been aching since my accident 6 weeks prior. I was amazed at how much better I felt immediately afterwards after having been in constant pain for so long, and I knew that I had made the right choice in selecting Tom. That was 5 months ago.For most of the past 5 months I have received massage therapy twice a week, supplementing two weekly physical therapy sessions. I think the massage therapy I received has been critical to my recovery. I was able to reduce and eventually eliminate all pain medication, and as I began to recover functional use of my shoulder and arm, the massage therapy helped to keep my muscles loose and flexible and to help relieve some of the pain resulting from intense physical therapy.Today I have recovered much of the functionality and movement that I lost after the accident, and I am still working with my physical therapist and with Tom. I could not be more satisfied with the treatments I have received from Tom. He is genuinely interested in understanding my concerns and any issues that I am having, and takes these into account each time I go in for treatment. I don't know how I could have endured the painful physical therapy treatments and have recovered as well as I have without receiving regular massage therapy treatments. The office location is convenient for me, and the office environment is a very calming and comfortable. Office hours are convenient, and parking is no problem. Tom is a complete professional in every sense, and has the knowledge and experience to help relieve pain and speed recovery. I strongly recommend Tom and Re.kin.ect Therapeutic Solutions. More...

I had never heard of Amma Therapy before I met Tom about a year ago. I discovered it is energy work based on ancient Chinese, although he offers other sorts of massage. I was experiencing chronic pain throughout my body, including neuropathy, joint pain, and other issues. My situation seemed hopeless because I wasn’t getting any results from doctors through my health insurance. I won’t say Tom had a magic pill that made everything better instantly, but through patience and Tom’s encouragement, I honestly can’t believe how much better I feel. He is an expert in therapy and he clearly cares about his clients. I feel so lucky I found him! More...

My husband and I discovered Tom when we moved to Sorrento Valley. We had very intense, stressful desk jobs that resulted in a ton of shoulder/neck tightness. Add to that - tennis, outrigger canoe paddling, and personal training and all of our other outdoor activities - we needed a lot of help! :) Tom has an amazing ability to work out the knots, and also gave us stretches to do at home. I especially like that he starts his massages face up, and he asks you what's bothering you - physically and mentally - and then he works you through it. It's not just massage, it's massage therapy! (No pun intended!) The best part was going on a frequent enough basis, such that he was able to become familiar with the "trouble spots" and knew exactly how to kneed those out. The relaxing feel of the rooms, the soothing music, the salt rock lamps . . . ahhhhh . . . wish I was there RIGHT NOW! More...

Tom is AMAZING! Since January, I have had several persistent muscular issues resulting from various reasons such as poor ergonomics, workout injuries and recovering from a broken ankle. With each separate issue, Tom spent a lot time on his pre-massage consult to find out what was at the heart of it. Not only did he work on them in-session but offered valuable advice on how to further recover and prevent similar issues in the future. He is very knowledgeable and I trust him completely! More...

Whether you're looking for general relaxation or rehabilitation of an injury - Tom is who you want to see. I was skeptical about massage "therapy", but I've seen the incredible benefits after working with Tom. I no longer have tension headaches, I have better posture, and I am just all-around healthier thanks to his massages.I injured my shoulder and neck in a car accident, and like most of us, I went through the western medicine discipline - I saw various doctors, took medicines, and did physical therapy for months with no results. Two sessions with Tom, and I have seen incredible improvement. WOW.If you're on the fence about getting a massage here, just go - you won't regret it. More...

I've been a client of Toms for about 10 years... I won't use anyone else. He really takes the time to listen to where I need focus work on my body (usually upper back, shoulder tightness and tense neck). I like a deep tissue massage and Tom will always check with you to make sure the pressure is good.  The location is quiet and serene, and the massage room is always clean and comfortable. The massage table is heated slightly to take the chill off which makes you relax from the minute you lie down. I love that re.kin.ect uses on-line booking for appointments, making it easy go to the web site any time of the day or night and find an open time on Tom's calendar that works with my schedule. So glad I met Tom when I did. Finding out that I have 2 herniated disks in my neck that was giving me excruciating pain in my back, shoulder and arm, I didn't know where to turn but to the ER and hospitalization. Finding Tom has kept me and is currently keeping me out of the Emergency room now. With his massage techniques he has relieved so much of my pain, not saying I am fixed, I will be going in for surgery but for now his therapy has given me freedoms that I haven't had in months. I am almost 100% pain free now and I know its because of the care and expertize that Tom has taken to get me here. I now have a weekly schedule to keep me where I am at and will continue to see Tom after my surgery to make sure I maintain and never get back to where I was. Thanks Tom, I appreciate everything you've done. You're a lifesaver!! Best, Sandie. More...

Tom is wonderful- hands down! I spent a fair amount of time on Yelp searching for a reputable massage place. I sent out several emails to see which would give me the best response. Tom's answer was by far the best- he took time to answer my questions and concerns I expressed in my email. This put me at ease that he was legitimate and could help me out.I'm only 24 and found out a few years ago that I have scoliosis- which goes a long way to explain my almost chronic neck/shoulder/back pain. I've had massages in the past  and been to chiropractors in the past but none of them really helped much (nor did they notice my scoliosis). I was concerned I might run into that again- but I definitely did not.Tom sits you down before even starting the session to talk about your goals and how your body feels, etc. It is great to have a check-in so that he can tailor the massage even more to help you get the most relief. I've only had 2 massages with Tom so far, but I've noticed a difference and intend to have more! His massages are definitely worth every penny! Plus he is full of great advice about healthy habits and fun to talk too! More...

Q&As

Many clients have asked me what I like about my career as a massage therapist. I enjoy working with clients who come to me looking for help when other conventional modalities have failed. Being able to improve the quality of someones life is a special responsibility and I take it very seriously. I am here as your advocate, to help you regain your life without chronic pain.

The freedom that being your own boss affords is a nice perk. I believe that it contributes to a better balance of life and work.

Results. I consistently get my clients to meet the goals that we set at the beginning of our sessions together.

Deep tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscle and the connective tissue, or fascia. This type of massage focuses on the muscles located below the superficial muscles. Deep tissue massage is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain, are involved in heavy physical activity (such as athletes), and patients who have sustained physical injury. It is not uncommon for receivers of deep tissue massage to have their pain replaced with a new muscle ache for a day or two as a result of the intense, deliberate and focused work. These new muscle aches are part of the healing process. The term “deep tissue” is often misused to identify a massage that is performed with sustained deep pressure. Deep tissue massage is used to treat particular muscular-skeletal disorders and complaints and employs a dedicated set of techniques and strokes to achieve a desired measure of relief. It should not be confused with a “deep pressure” massage, which is one that is performed with sustained strong, occasionally intense pressure throughout an entire full-body session, and that is not performed to address a specific complaint.

Amma Therapy is an extremely specialized form of massage therapy based in Taoism. Dating back about 5000 years to the period of the legendary Yellow Emperor of China,
Amma Therapy combines deep tissue manipulation with the application of pressure and friction to specific points. While acupuncture inserts needles into the energy pathway to stimulate and move the energy, the Amma therapist relies primarily on the sensitivity and strength of the hands.
Amma Therapy has been proven to be an effective and powerful therapy for people of all ages for the promotion of health and wellbeing, the prevention of illness and for the treatment of specific diseases. Amma Therapy can help with but not limited to stiff neck and shoulders, lower back pain, muscular pain, indigestion, constipation, headaches, premenstrual syndrome, anxiety, poor sleep patterns and stress.

Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage the muscles. The five basic strokes of a Swedish massage are effleurage(sliding or gliding), petrissage (kneading or squeezing), friction and vibration/shaking.During a Swedish massage, there is less emphasis on working out serious adhesions or knots in the muscle tissue. The therapist won’t push your pain limits in order to get the muscle to release. Sometimes people may even fall asleep. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain, lowering stress levels, joint stiffness, and improving function in patients with osteoarthritis.

Massage during pregnancy offers undeniable physical benefits throughout every prenatal stage. In most cases, massage is perfectly safe and can help the mother-to-be relieve general body aches, pains, and tension that her body is going through. Receiving massage throughout a pregnancy can help in many ways including but not limited to the following:
Stimulating blood flow (may prevent anemia)
Increase muscle tone and flexibility (alleviating muscle cramps and spasms)
Stimulates lymphatic system (may help prevent/reduce edema)
Relieve headaches
Help alleviate morning sickness
Reduce fatigue
Alleviate backaches and leg cramps
Alleviate ligament pain
Relieving aches and pains
Alleviate stress on weight-bearing joints
Learn relaxation skills
Release physical and emotional tension
Research has shown that women who receive massage while pregnant may have easier deliveries, a reduced chance of post-partum depression, and regain their bodies more quickly. While receiving a pregnancy massage, you are positioned on your side using specially designed bolsters and pillows to allow the therapist access to your back. Likewise, more specially designed pillows are used to position you in a semi-reclined position so you can receive work on your belly and anything else that you would normally have massaged if lying flat. No matter the position, you will always remain properly draped except for the area being massaged.
At Re.kin.ect Therapeutic Massage, we require a release from your doctor stating that it is ok to receive a prenatal massage. You will not be eligible to receive your first prenatal massage until after the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
