Everyone was professional and helpful. Very happy with open plan that Rick and his team designed. They also brought in Lisa Jensen to help with design and she was a big help as liaison to contractor, architects and me. Franken-Polli, the general contractors, were exceptional. Their lead, Matt, deserves special mention for his attention to detail. Cabinets were done but Shikles Cabinets. The whole team worked together well, and kept me current on the project status. RDM Architecture did an excellent job for me as I explored a master bath addition to my 1889 home in Westwood, Kansas. I ultimately decided to stay within the footprint of the main house and concentrate on rebuilding a 400 square foot guesthouse that was in need of renovation. RDM staff was very professional and was more than willing to change the scope of the project to satisfy my shifting priorities. The staff presented high quality plans and helped me interview and select the best contractor for the job. The team was always available to answer questions and to modify the plans as needed. I would highly recommend Rick and his team for any remodeling project. More...

I hired RDM Architecture to design my kitchen 18 years ago. Rick was original in his design. He suggested that the island be fabricated in the shape of a grand piano, after he saw the piano in our living room. We are still enjoying our beautiful and functional kitchen!

More recently I asked for his help on our third floor remodel. We wanted to remove a wall, to open up the space. He suggested a half wall or "pony wall", which is open, yet functional. He also came up with the idea of making a cubby in an existing wall bench, for our wi-fi and Sonos system. They function well, because they are not completely surrounded by wood, but they are not so noticeable either, because they are inside the cubby.

Two projects--18 years apart--both with original ideas that we would not have thought of on our own.

I used RDM to help with a garage addition to my house in 2017 and 2018. The design they submitted was top notch. They connected me with a contractor that exceeded my expectations and left me with a finished project that ties in so well to my house that most cannot tell it's an addition. I receive compliments all the time and it has certainly added to the value of my house. They take a very personal interest in their projects and I would easily use them again without reservation. I also decided to add a screened patio room. Mike was always professional and helpful. He listened an made helpful suggestions, but always listened to me needs and wants. We had previously worked with RDM on our porch enclosure which is pictured among others here on the RDM pages. When we decided to build a new house, we engaged Rick McDermott from the start--even to help us select the building lot. It is now two years later and the project is complete. Rick and Matt Lero listened to us and were able to design a house that met our needs and also followed a daunting set of rules laid out by the city. The narrow, deep lot presented its own challenges, but also allowed for the spectacular contemporary design. Matt was especially creative when it came to design details and use of unique materials. RDM's hands-on approach and attention to detail at every stage of development/construction has made this project a total success. More...

After living in our 1922 Federal-style Colonial for 27 years, we knew what we wanted to add to it (it had had 3 additions previously). We wanted (A) add a mudroom with a coat closet at the back door, (B) create a real back porch (covered) with concrete steps, (C) enlarge the den and make it convertible to a first floor bedroom if we had mobility issues in the future (oh, and re-use the floor and some of the walls of the old den which was added in 1942), (D) widen the doorway for accessibility and enlarge the first floor bathroom (it already had a shower) (E) enlarge a tiny back bedroom upstairs so we could use it as a master bedroom, and (F) modify the master bath so that there was an entrance into the new master bedroom in the back instead of the old master bedroom in the front. For the exterior, it also had to look as much like it had always been there as possible--not easy with 2 hipped roofs & a shed roof already existing. We also had a lot of "don't"s--don't ruin the screened porch, don't change the kitchen, don't eliminate the window at the top of the center staircase, don't put the back door where you can't see it from all sides, don't ruin the flow of the first floor. Poor Rick and Mike! It has to be easier to design new houses! It was so nice--they got it and were great about making sure we considered options if they thought maybe we had missed something. The contractor we hired really like working with them, and they communicated very well with him and us. Due the great work of the general contractor and them, you can't even tell where the old den ended and the new space begins. The house lives like we wanted it to--and it is appropriately sized for the block. Very happy with our decision to work with them, and would do so again! More...

RDM Architecture designed a multi-phase renovation of our home that was built in 1988. Phase 1 transformed our lower level family room to an inviting space for entertaining complete with a bar & TV lounge & easy access to outdoor space. Phase 1 required incorporating structural support for the Phase 2 plan which was the remodel & opening up of the kitchen on the main level. Both of these room designs have transformed the aesthetic appeal of our home beyond our expectations. These architects set the tone for a very positive experience by first taking the time to understand our vision, by developing a good rapport with our choice for the contractor, & in lending support in our decisions throughout the project. We will eagerly use this firm when we are ready to pursue additional projects in this home. More...

The team at RDM Architecture was to great to work with, and in my case as I am a general contractor myself, also to great to work for. They are very good at showing what the new potential of an existing space can become. Their renderings of what the new space will look like are easy to comprehend and they give the view from all of the various angles needed to understand the whole look of the project.

When it comes to structural additions, they do a very good job of matching what is existing but also throwing in new details to make the addition stand out in a good way as well. Their final drawings are very detailed as well which helps to keep a job moving along without a lot of decisions to be made on the fly.

We chose RDM Architecture to design a workshop addition to our existing garage because they had previously deigned a beautiful patio and pergola at our home. The finished patio project not only addressed the multiple elevations of our existing house and yard, but it dramtically increased the usable space and improved the view from inside. It turned an eyesore into a place we love.
Rick and Matt took our idea to add a workshop on the back of our garage and turned it into a highly functional, energy efficient room. They worked with us to determine what we were looking for in the space and managed to design a workshop with plenty of storage, natural light and improved ventilation. Their research was thorough regarding local codes, energy efficiency and environmentally sound products. The room matches the architecture of our house perfectly and enhances the appearance of our backyard. They were a pleasure to work with in all phases of design and build.

We had a home, originally built in 1928, we wanted to completely renovate. We were introduced to RDM Architecture through our General Contractor. Rick McDermott (RDM Principal), Mike Schumacher (RDM Architect), and Matt Lero (RDM Architect) met with us to review what we wanted to do with the space on a number of occasions. There were two primary requirements; open concept on the inside and maintain the original 1928 architectural integrity of the house on the outside. RMD took it from there. We were provided a number of different options by RDM from which to choose; both on the inside floor plan as well as the outside elevation. Honestly, all ideas were excellent and hard to choose. Ultimately, RDM took what we liked in the different options and combined them into one cohesive design. We couldn't have been more pleased with how the house turned out. What made us most proud were the many strangers, watching/monitoring the transformation of our house over the months, stop by and tell us how beautiful it now is - That is the greatest compliment we can pay to RDM Architecture. RDM architecture is a first class firm with an excellent staff of architects who are all highly approachable and a pleasure to work with. Home design is clearly a passion for this group. Their designs are innovative and highly personalized to the goals of the client. At our initial meeting, we talked to Rick McDermott about some of the things we really didn't like about our kitchen and living room. He asked thoughtful questions until he had had transformed our non-specific complaints into a complete vision for the space that we could never have developed on our own. I've heard people complain that using an architectural firm can be a waste of money--this is not the case with RDM. If you would want an overhaul of your space that is personalized to your needs, reflects your style, but is something you would never been able envision yourself, this is your architectural firm. The ideas were further refined in a series of design ideas executed by Rick and Matthew Lero. We selected the ideas we liked best, and they continued to refine the designs and worked with us to find a contractor. Turn-around time for designs and revisions was quick. Rick led his team on our project to find innovative solutions to our "wish list" that we could have never dreamed of on our own. They created a whole house Master Plan with us and then subdivided that into logical phases. We completed Phase 1 in the Fall of 2012, and we couldn't be happier. The newly expanded spaces, as well as the smaller renovated spaces, all feel fresh and timeless and perfectly functional for our small family. The work included a bump-out expansion on the front of our home which grew the size of both our Master Bedroom and our Guest Bedroom. We also transformed two side-by-side reach-in closets into a walk-in closet and a separate laundry room encased in a new bright and sunny rear facing dormer.

Future phases include removal of a load bearing wall to combine two small living spaces into a single, larger space we can entertain in, a renovated Guest Bath, and a brand new Kitchen, among other things. We look forward to starting Phase 2 with RDM Architecture in the early winter of 2015.
