Q&As

I love helping people imagine and invent new ways of thinking about themselves, their building environments, and their futures … I love being able to see and encourage new opportunities during the course of a design that the client might not otherwise imagine. Whether it’s a new home, an improvement to an existing home, a restaurant, school, or a monastery, each project is a unique opportunity to explore its program’s many elements to discover what’s most fitting for the client, site, and budget. Once your interdisciplinary collaboration has been successfully completed, the thrill of beholding the glorious presence of a well-conceived building and its site transformed can be immensely rewarding.

A very unconventional client asked me to design something “advanced” for a sizable site that he owned on the East Village Commons in Amherst, MA. Eventually, “800 Main Street” (see https://lehndesign.com/800-main-street), our proposal for a new mixed-use village center, brought together an historic collaboration to design the country’s first public solar heated and cooled building. While the Arab’s surprise ’73 oil boycott ironically prevented the project from being realized, the project’s publicity helped pass Amherst's progressive new zoning code, and the experience of charting my own course to serve such a more noble purpose has always proved especially alluring.

1. My teachers were among my time’s and profession’s most accomplished practitioners. Rich Haag, Warren Callister, Jack Payne, and Roland Terry were all respected and appreciated internationally as well as locally for several truly wonderful works.
2. Pla only takes on as many projects as we can comfortably complete, which means my focus on your work will be less distracted by my focus on others’ work.
3. I'm relatively fast and tend to dig a little deeper into a project’s program, budget, and site to discover opportunities that may eventually help us to evolve a more complete and fitting concept.

Yes, pla is prepared to offer our services remotely. Our computers and software permits us to communicate via telephone, zoom, photography, and emails to understand and respond to clients' needs without meeting with them directly.

I have taken Pfizer's first two vacines and look forward to receiving their booster soon. Furthermore, I typically wear a mask during all meetings unless I'm convinced that everyone in the room is vacinated.
