My name is Perry Kurtz. On March 17, 2022, I celebrated 49 years as a full-time working comedian. I have been performing comedy professionally the entire time, and have not ever had a day job.
About 19 years ago, I realized that there is very little to be made performing in the comedy clubs in Los Angeles because people will work for free for practice. So I began performing interactive and motivational comedy and music shows at senior, convalescent, Elks, Vets Lodges, high schools, private parties and family locations. This has become my bread-and-butter. Or should I say margarine to be politically correct? Aside from it paying my bills, it is always full of surprises as seniors are very outspoken since they feel they can say whatever they want. And they do. My senior shows consist of me talking about my life and getting older, along with the changes we all have to make. Then I engage them by asking, "Who has a birthday this month? Who's the oldest, youngest, from out of town, a veteran, longest married, former entertainer?" Whatever I can do to get them talking while I motivate them to keep on living. When I get them laughing and singing, I know I've made a difference. The feedback from the few that come up after the show, really "Lights my fire."
My stand up comedy is based purely on my life. I have over 18 hours of material, but due to my improvisational background, which includes many years of improvising two hours a week with Robin Williams up in San Francisco for 8 years, I am always creating on the spot, and completely responsive to the audience. As they can tell they are getting their own show, they are very very supportive. I usually open my show by dancing, and close with my improvisational music. My shows include comedy and invoking the audience to interact with me with my comedy and music. Shows can run up to 90 minutes, including roasting or toasting audience members, providing I have some background information on them. My shows are G rated for when needed, to triple X-rated. I adapt to any situation automatically and have never offended anyone.
I have appeared on America's Got Talent, Let's Make a Deal(I rapped and danced), the Tonight Show, America's Funniest People, Rodney Dangerfield's Young Comedians Special, Comedy Central, ABC News, The Late Late Show with James Corden, The New Gong Show, and many more TV productions. Some of the TV shows featured me because of a unique talent that I have. Aside from my dancing abilities, which date back to American Bandstand in 1967 and 1968(I added the 19 so you don't think it was 1868), I always create songs and raps about whatever is going on in the room as it happens. It is completely narrational, gets the audience involved, and I've never seen anyone else with this ability. It's in key, on time, rhymes, and is funny. For that reason I am very popular in the karaoke circuit where I am considered the OG, which I believe stands for old guy.
In 1990 I married a young lady who had three children that did not know their fathers, and raised them as my own. All three children are now adults living on their own, successful in their own right, and do not drink or smoke cigarettes. In 2004 we had a beautiful child named Riley, who is now a very established Kpop Dancer and singer, and has appeared as a featured dancer at The Anime Convention at L.A. Live. They are also one of the funniest people I know. It's like hanging out with a 30 year old.
My one goal in my life has been to make everyone in the world laugh at least once.
