Excellent program, I highly recommend.  I did the basic obedience package.  I was hesitant at first.  I did not want to set $600 on fire for dog training, but two of my sisters had used off leash with glowing reviews.  So I brought in my 1 year old lab mainly because she would not come when called, and embarrassed me with my family's other dogs over Xmas.Scheduling takes a while cause the place is busy.  But the training was great.  They teach the dog a command first and then u have to practice on your own at home.  I did 3 weeks between lessons for the first 3.  Then a six month gap for the last one.  She was so good at that point I forgot I still had another lesson.Make no mistake though, there is effort required on your part to complete the training.  It's not an automatic fix.  I can't speak to the board and train but I imagine it's similar.  The owner has to do their part too.  I may sign up for some advanced lessons as well.Overall I have high praise for all trainers.  My lab is a family dog now that behaves appropriately.Ben S More...

After a year of having our German Shepard we were considering giving her to another family. We had a wild 80 pound dog that wasn't house broken and caused a ton of stress in our lives. It was to the point that the neighbors were afraid to have their dogs walk towards us if we were waking our dog. She counter surfaced, barked constantly, and had no obedience at all. Jackie was referred to me from a good friend and we are so happy we made the effort to get her trained! Jackie has such a passion for dogs! She supported us and worked on everything we felt was needed. The ecollar was a concern but with knowing how it works it out our minds at ease. We now have a dog that barks only when necessary, can be walked without having our neighbors walk away from us, counter surfacing is nonexistent. She really understands commands and is obedient. Jackie is amazing at what she does and would recommend her to anyone! More...

[This review is specifically for the Woodbridge location, with trainer Danny Walker]We had an excellent experience with OffLeash. My dog had just turned one when he started his two week board-and-train with Danny. He was already quite well-behaved and obedient, with a few party tricks up his sleeve, but I wanted him to be reliable off-leash with near-perfect recall and better impulse control. We had a bit of ecollar experience, and OffLeash gave me a discount since my dog was coming with his own collar. Dropping my dog off was a great experience. Danny was very attentive to my dog and explained everything in great detail to me. I felt he clearly communicated what my expectations should be for the two weeks, and I felt comfortable telling him what my expectations were. I got daily updates and videos from Danny and felt comfortable knowing my dog was getting adequate training time and playtime. It was clear to me from the videos that my dog really loved Danny and enjoyed his time with him. Our pickup experience was also smooth and I loved how I got trained on how to effectively communicate with my dog and help him capitalize on his new skills (namely, you still have to put the work in every day with your dog to keep both of your skills sharp). We use the ecollar all the time and he is amazing with it. He loves putting it on because that means adventure and play time. Even when we don't have it on, I can tell he is still very attentive to my commands and he heels beautifully and responds so well to commands without the collar on. I am super impressed with that since he's 1.5 and definitely still a sassy teenager finding his place in the world.I still text Danny occasionally with obedience/training questions, and he has always responded in a timely manner with helpful suggestions. They say guarantee for life, and so far so good! We get compliments on my dog's behavior all the time. As an added bonus, Danny is a very talented photographer! Not only do I now have a well-trained dog, but I also have an amazing portfolio of model shots of him. I'd highly recommend Danny to anyone. More...

We adopted a wonderful adult dog who had a fear of larger dogs probably due to a bad experience with her previous home.  I was afraid to walk her by myself on trails as passing a larger dog without a scene was impossible.  After a bad experience at a kennel while we were out of town, we knew we had to do something and now.  Several other trainers didn't want to work with us but OLK9 called me back almost instantly and assured me they could assist.  We started an eight week dog reactivity program.  The difference in my dog is night and day.  She sits, lays down, and heels.  She is a pleasure to walk and no longer tugs on the lead.  We have slack!  It's amazing.  We can now enjoy trails and I don't fear passing other dogs as the reaction is gone.  Now, this did require work on my part but I feel my dog and I have bonded as a result.  She trusts me and I her.  I am considering more lessons with OLK9 to improve and tighten up a few areas so we can truly be off leash soon.  The trainers are wonderful people.  I can't thank them enough. It was a night and day difference after my dog's 2 week board and train with Robert at Fredericksburg! Before training, my dog was the biggest scaredy-cat which made training him on our own challenging. At 10 months old, we were still having frequent accidents in the house, he didn't fully respond to his name, and walking outside was exhausting as he had no direction as everything distracted him. Let me tell you, Robert's training over my dog was amazing! My husband and I were truly in shock seeing my dog respond to commands and do them so quickly! Robert took the time, even though it was later in the evening, to go over everything he had taught our dog and how to use the e-collar. What made me truly knew that Remy was in good hands for two weeks was when Robert said, if your dog doesn't listen or respond to your command the first time, be patient with him; he's like any little kid. If I ever get a new dog, I know where I'm sending them for training as it's very much worth it! Thank you again Robert and Off Leash K9! More...

I was at my wits' end with my 1 year old rescued coonhound when someone recommended Off Leash K9 training. He was destructive, stubborn, counter-surfing - did I mention destructive and stubborn? The idea of giving him up had even crossed my mind once or twice because I simply had no idea how to get through to him. I live in Alexandria, and the local trainers seemed too lovey dovey to actually handle a dog with a big personality who very much wanted to be in charge of the household. Unfortunately Off Leash didn't have any availability in Woodbridge, so I drove down to Fredericksburg on Saturday mornings for a month. It's been a year now, and TJ is 2 years old, and the difference is unbelievable. He's still stubborn as heck, but he'll sit, come, and off like a champ. I truly never thought I'd be able to have a pet and not just a dog. Now that it's been a year, we only use the e-collar with him when we're out hiking in parks. He trots right beside us without us ever having to use the collar. The ONE time we had to use the collar, he was pursuing an adult deer!I can't recommend Off Leash enough if you have a stubborn dog who's just not obeying. We've completed 3/4 of the sessions in the beginner obedience package and are thrilled with the progress our 3 year old rescue German Shepherd, Mowgli, has made! I was skeptical of the e-collar method but couldn't ignore the success in all of OLK9's videos so decided to give it a try. After our trainer, Sarah, spent a good chunk of the first session explaining the collar to us and letting us feel it out for ourselves on various levels, all our concerns were relieved. The collar does not cause Mowgli any pain or discomfort whatsoever and simply acts as another means of communication between us and him during training. I was also skeptical that an hour long session each week would be enough to see a significant difference in his behavior, however, the value you get comes directly from the practice you put in and the hour of work with the trainer has been more than sufficient each time in teaching us how best to practice with our dog. We already notice Mowgli looking to us more often for direction before acting and were THRILLED when we were able to play fetch with him with a dropped leash knowing he would come back to us straight away. We plan to take at least 1 to 2 more advanced sessions with OLK9 and know we will continue to be able to use the skills they have taught us in practicing with our dog into the future. More...

4 stars rounding up from 3.6ish or soMy dog completed the board and stay in April 2017. He loved his trainer. He is still able to do all the commands off leash with most distractions except for cars and bikes. He recently completed basic agility off leash. We live in a rural area and he does the majority of his walks off leash as well. We're working towards his canine good citizen certificate. We stopped using the e-collar in June. He didn't want to wear it. No I wasn't misusing it or shocking the crap out of him. He's a sensitive dog. I do plan on having him do some type of work (e.g., herding, agility, etc.) and depending on that I may re-introduce the collar to him at some point. The training seemed to work because he is still able to do everything without the collar, but I think part of it is he's a very smart dog. I found the location and drop off times to be very inconvenient. I had to take time off work for both days. I also found the training to be very cookie-cutter (i.e., it's about training the dog to a standard versus working with the dogs potential). I get this would make it difficult to guarantee a dog can do certain commands, but I think it would help with increasing success rates with the collar. If I had to do it over again, I would do something where I'm involved in the training and I would also choose something closer to my house. Off Leash K9 Training was our last resort.  If they couldn't help us and our dog, then we had no options. However, we were unsure about the Off Leash K9 Training because of the electric collar, but, as it turned out, it was the only way to get our dog's attention.  Once we completed the training, we never had to use the collar again.  Our dog followed commands almost immediately and we all got along much better. I took my rescue pittie to off leash K9 after spending countless hours/$$ with other trainers trying to help with his dog reactivity. I was originally hesitant about the e-collar as I had heard negative/incorrect information from a coworker who believes in purely positive reinforcement. After my first lesson with Morgan, my mind was completely changed. She and the rest of the staff clearly care about dogs and would never do anything that would harm any dog. They also have you put the collar on your hand and test it out before putting it on your dog - it's NOT A SHOCK! We have now completed 7/8 of the dog aggression training sessions and my dog is a completely different dog. He does still react at times, but I can now take him places where I never would before and I also know how to redirect his attention if he does react. We have had all of our classes with Morgan so I can't speak on the other trainers but she is excellent and even took the time to text me and let me know that her schedule got moved last minute and allowed us to reschedule our last class so we could be with her. Looking forward to our last session with her and I'm sure my 5 star review will not change!  I will never waste my time with other trainers again.**note if to do not have the time or patience to work with your dog between classes, I highly recommend you spend the extra money and board your dog. A few years ago my husband and I adopted our third dog, a young female Saint Bernard, that as she settled into our home began causing some big issues. (Adding a third dog changes the ENTIRE dynamic!) She was horrible on a leash, couldn't be left out when we were out of the house but hated her kennel, counter surfed, barked at everyone, dog reactive, the list goes on. Clearly, she hadn't been well socialized or had any time spent on basic obedience in her first home. A Saint is not a small dog so when issues with her and our older male Saint began within our home, that was the last straw. We knew we needed to put a stop to it immediately and that we needed help. We started with another training company (which I will not name) and worked with them for several months. Some of her issues improved. She got much better in her crate and no more swiping things off the counters but we had a few dog fights over food and toys. Thankfully, neither of the dogs were injured but we knew we had to figure something out. I contacted our trainer at the time and I was incredibly disappointed in his response. He gave us the option of trying a few things around the house, one of which being both of them wearing basket muzzles all the time .. Not a fan of the idea. It wouldn't actually fix anything. It was just a band-aid. He suggested keeping an air horn around to break up fights, which I do still keep around, just in case; It still wasn't a solution though ...again, just a band-aid. His last option for us was considering getting rid of one of our dogs. SERIOUSLY?! We paid for training to make this work for you to then tell us not to keep her? He never even offered another training session. I knew right then that we had made a mistake in selecting a trainer.I work at a vet clinic in the area and we had brochures for Off Leash K9 that we were frequently handing out to clients, so I decided to check them out for myself. My husband and I were very impressed by the before and after videos and reviews and even though we don't live near the Woodbridge location, I'd heard such good things about trainers at this particular location that I didn't want to go anywhere else. We opted to do the dog aggression package and we wanted to attend the lessons and do the training ourselves rather than do the board and train. I have no doubt that the board and train would have been easier for us, but we wanted to be more involved in her training. It took us a while to complete because of our crazy schedules but I am a believer in their methods and I wish we had started with them from the get go. We noticed a difference in her immediately after our first 1 hour lesson. All but one of her lessons were done with Morgan and I highly recommend her to everyone I send to Off Leash K9. We had one session with another female trainer that I was not pleased with and our dog did not respond to her or the way she utilized the collar. Our dog shut down during the lesson and I felt like we took a few steps back by the end of that hour. However, we made sure we scheduled the rest with Morgan and each time we left feeling more confident in how to mold our dog into a better behaved pup. The best part for anyone skeptical about e-collar training; Our dog legitimately gets EXCITED when she sees her collar! It is NOT used as punishment but as a way of better communicating with her. We're so grateful to Morgan at Off Leash K9 for all of her help. It has made a huge difference in our lives. More...

Just brought Mika, our almost 3 year old Siberian Husky home from the 2 week boarding training at the Woodbridge, VA facility. Trainer name: Mountain. (FANTASTIC human being :D)If you know nothing about husky personalities, know this: THEY THINK FOR THEMSELVES. And if they don't like something, they'll backtalk you up one side and down the other and play the super cute "look at me" card so they don't have to do what they're told. This WAS the definition of Mika. Of course, we literally got DAILY videos of her progress, and 7 days in, there's no leash use at all. They took her to Fredericksburg, had her sit in front of the local Target as people went in and out, and had her train in a Home Depot. It was all amazing. I was more blown away by the turnover phase.  We started inside with the typical commands, and boy did she not like 'mom and dad' making her do all these tasks. She was SUPER vocal. She hid in my chest, she threw a fit at her daddys' feet. We were determined. Just kept repeating the commands and she gave in. She knew she couldn't come back home and act the same. Once we went outside, her 'heel' was phenomenal. After we dropped the 20' leash, she stayed RIGHT by our leg. I ran by as she was in her heel command with her daddy and she looked at me, and with one correction, she didn't try to follow me again!!!We took her to the local dog park at home to practice her commands... maybe she was tired, but she didn't sass back, she didn't run off, and it didn't take many repetitions to get her to obey commands!!! They have a circle of rocks and we were able to place her from one to the next to the next! She did ups and downs from a distance. She listened to my 'come' and his 'come' and even walked in and out of the park from the car without her leash being held. There's going to be a lot of follow through training so she doesn't revert; we basically get trained too, but so far, in these last 12 hours, she's been the most well behaved in her LIFE. We're dedicating at least 1 hour a day to solid training with her at different outdoor venues, as she will be our best geo-dog sidekick for geocaching ventures! She is constantly rewarded with loving rubs and playfulness and a treat or two for a job well done. SEND YOUR PUP TO OFF LEASH K9 TRAINING. Do yourself that favor. I'm not even joking. The amount of friends I have that have watched her progress as I uploaded our daily videos to Facebook are impressed. They're telling their friends and family and quite a few have signed up their pups already! I can't begin to praise them enough for their dedication and speedy behavioral modification with Mika. Guaranteed recall while out with her gives us a piece of mind that nothing else could. Sure, you could spend the cost of training on other things, but what's more irreplaceable than your best friend? Just competed our third basic obedience lesson for our 90lb, 1.5 year female Mastiff (we think!) mix Riley. The first lesson was with Christina and the next two were with Morgan. Riley is a powerful, young and energetic dog we were having a hard time controlling her. On the first lesson with Morgan she gave us insight into Riley's behavior and what steps we needed to take to turn things around. We were unknowingly doing things that gave her too much power and that was a big reason she was having behavior issues. We followed Morgan's instructions and it was good advice. We already notice a big difference around the house and walks are becoming really fun. Riley is much calmer and tuned in to us but is still her goofy, happy self. A common concern I hear people voice about e-collar training is that they worry about their dog losing their personality. Not the case with our dog at all. She is still herself, just with more impulse control and better manners! The communication between us and Riley has improved, our home feels much more relaxed and all three of us are happy. After our fourth and last basic obedience lesson we will continue on with four more dog aggression lessons so we get the skills necessary to feel confident with her around other dogs and distractions. Everyone we have interacted with at OFK9 have been professional and respectful. For all the reasons listed above we would definitely recommend them. Morgan is excellent. Money well spent. More...

My girlfriend and I purchased the 8-session Dog Aggression Training Package for our dog. This package included the e-collar, remote, 20-foot leash and the 8 lessons. The first four lessons were focused on basic obedience with the following four focused on dog aggression. Most of our lessons were with Morgan. She was fantastic as a dog trainer and a teacher for us to learn best practices and the do's and don'ts. We were especially impressed with her ability to be in control of the entire situation and environment. She made us feel comfortable working on our pup and his aggression issues, we'd never been comfortable doing that before. We learned even more than he did. A+! We did a lesson with Gary too, he was great as well. We're giving Offleash K9 a 4 and not a 5, because of these reasons:- Price. It is expensive. We would've sprung for the boarding classes if they were more affordable. Our 8 one-hour lessons were $850 including the equipment. - Scheduling. We'd like the ability to schedule classes not only on day/time but also with specific trainers. We would've been ecstatic if we could've been with Morgan for each lesson. The schedule would need to reflect their shifts, days off, and any scheduling changes they'd have. This would also help with the hand-off from one trainer/lesson to another. The trainers don't seem to have notes they supply or file for the next lesson (if there's another trainer). This would be handy if Offleash K9 couldn't let us schedule all 8 with the same trainer. We don't want to have to explain everything each week to each new trainer. It should be like a vet visit, not a cold call. - Inconsistency in trainers. We were with a couple of other trainers, who, while good, weren't awesome. Overall, we saw great results and it was a good investment. Good experience. More...

Friendly and knowledgeable trainers!  Took great care of our dog and sent us videos or pictures everyday.  They love animals and are great at their job!

We worked with trainers Gary and Morgan throughout the basic obedience package. It was like having a whole new dog after one lesson. Our once stubborn puppy is now keenly aware of who is in charge. They gave us very simple but effective horrors to do between lessons and made us feel like part of the training process. It was just as much a learning experience for us, teaching us how to effectively use the e-collar as a training tool. They equipped us with enough to be able to teach our dog any commands we want going forward. Clearer instructions on the website regarding scheduling and payments would have been helpful. The site allowed us to schedule all of our lessons without making any payments, and then when we spoke with them on the phone were told we'd have to pay everything that day or cancel the lessons. This is the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. They did fix this oversight by setting up a payment plan for us, but it could have been avoided with a better website. More...

I can obviously only comment on how our dog progressed with Off Leash K9 Training Woodbridge, but the fact that its services are sought after from locations outside of the Washington, DC MSA is pretty impressive. We have a two-year-old pit bull mix and he is highly distracted by other dogs and humans - but always in a friendly manner. It was difficult to get him to walk with us without pulling and getting excited. He still does that from time to time, but he always listens to his commands - even without the e-collar on these days. A quick note about the e-collar: We expressed concern that the e-collar would change our dog's personality (he's goofy and we don't want him to lose that), and the instructors were clear that it would absolutely not do that, and that our dog would come to like it because he knew that it was time to train or go somewhere, and we found that to be absolutely true. It doesn't shock the dog - it's similar to a cell phone going off in your pocket to get your attention. We had a slight mix-up during his first training, and Off Leash K9 Training immediately gave us another lesson to redo that session. The point being - you have nothing to lose by trying it out. It's absolutely baffling to me that people wouldn't spend the money in the DMV area for at least the basic training ($650) to build their dog's confidence and skill set. One of our mother's is not a big fan of dogs or animals, in general, and she's come to really love our dog. She commented the other day that taking him for a walk was so much more fun now that he's gone through his training. That's the best review he could earn! More...

Bruce and Trish are amazing! We took our 2 year old Great Dane to them, as he was insecure and nervous around humans. They have worked out so much of his problems and given him a lot more confidence. They have laid the ground work for us to continue working and training him.  We more than appreciate the love and dedication they put into every dog, including our own. Thank you so much! Highly recommend. Kristin More...

We've been brining our shepherd/lab mix here and it's been such a good decision. Not only is she catching on fast, but the trainers are excellent at explaining the process so we can be just as successful at home as we are during our lessons. We'd highly recommend this to everyone. More...

We signed our dog Boomer (3 yo lab mix) up for the Basic Obedience package (4 classes) @ Woodbridge location. These classes consisted of the following 4 commands: sit, place (have them sit on an object), heel, and down.  Overall, we were pleased with the instruction and would recommend OLK to friends.  Below are the pros and cons:Pros:- It's pretty impressive how much they can do in an hour.  Not everyone is a fan of e-collar training, but I believe it is the fastest way to get results (we have tried several different methods)- All the trainers (we had 4 different) were very kind and we're more than happy to answer any questions we had.  Our personal favorite was Tank, no offense to the others.- We got results - he did improve.- All trainers were confident and knowledgable.Cons:- It's quite a drive from Falls Church/Vienna/McClean/Fairfax area to get down to their Woodbridge location.  Strongly consider in-home lessons.- They are super busy - we had to schedule *months* in advance at weird times in order to get a slot on the weekend.- The heel lesson left a little to be desired - the instructor did not try to enter distractions into the mix, so our dog was perfect during instruction, but he got home w/ distractions and struggled.  To us, heel is the most important of these 4 commands and should have been given more time IMHO.- It would be nice to have continuity between lessons (i.e. have the same instructor) - or at least have the option to do so. We had a different instructor each lesson.- It's a bit pricey More...

Took my 2.5 year old german shepherd here for the basic and advanced classes. Bdfore the classes we had to go on short walks at odd times of the day to avoid other people and dogs but now we go on long walks at all hours of the day! After her classes with Off Leask K9 she is the confident dog I always knew she could be. The trainers make classes fun and I loved developing a better relationship with my dog. Can't recommend these trainers enough!! More...

I took my English Cream Golden Retriever there.  All IL can say is wow.  The training is first rate and the trainers really seem to love what they do.  It's a little expensive, but it's definitely worth it. More...

I've had my 6 year old Shiba Inu since she was 2 years old. If you know anything about Shiba Inus, they are known for their incredible intelligence and stubborn behavior. My Shiba was extremely aggressive with other dogs (as they are known to be) - so much so that one trainer fired us as trainees. I was traumatized and was sure I'd have a lawsuit on my hands eventually because of my dog's aggression. I continued doing my research and came across Off Leash K9, and I put them in my list of potential trainers. I spent about a year researching and deliberating, and finally contacted them. Josh Wilson called me back and chatted with me for a while over the phone. This was the first time I felt like my dog's life - MY life - could change, so I signed my dog up that night for a 2 week board and train program. Honestly, the only thing I struggled with at all was the use of an e-collar, but without stating it, Josh let me know that I was putting my dog in very capable, well-trained hands. I even consulted other training companies, and they attested to OLK9's positive environment and expertise. For those concerned about using an e-collar, understand this: when placed in the hands of someone who knows how to use them and CAN TEACH YOU, these can be great corrective tools for your dog - not a punishment.Well, now I have my dog back, and I purposefully waited over a month to write this review so that I could be honest in my feedback. My dog is so incredibly well-behaved, and we're both happier because of it. The communication lapses between us and the power struggles have ceased. The animal that would run from me, going from dog to dog in the neighborhood just to bite them can now be trusted off leash (seriously, she was like a fat kid in a cake shop). She comes when I call, not just when she wants to. She behaves well with guests, and can even be trusted around other dogs. No joke - people even slow down their cars to tell me how perfectly my dog behaves. If I have any questions, I know I can always call or email Josh, and he'll walk me through tips on how to work with my dog - and they totally work. This isn't to say that my dog is totally recovered from her aggression. This is going to be something we work on for a while, but now I can manage it. If you've ever had an aggressive, uncontrollable dog that inflicts harm on other dogs, you would know that even just the possibility of being able to manage and help your pup means the world to you.I'm going to go play fetch with my dog in our fence-less, community backyard now :D More...
