John was very patient with us and our dog Apollo. We contacted him due to Apollo's severe anxiety. He would not let us approach him outside, would not come inside easily, and has had to be on a leash for the past 2 weeks at all times in the event he darts out of the door and won't come in. We rescued Apollo 4 years ago and his improvement since then has been minimal. We knew we needed outside help and contacted John due to his positive reinforcement approach. He gave us a lot of insight and tips to help Apollo break out of his shell. He also had our dog more comfortable with him then I thought he would be. We would highly recommend John for his love towards animals and their caretakers. His patience and understanding are very much appreciated and we would recommend him to anyone looking for a dog behaviorist to help their beloved K9. It will take time and patience, however, we are excited to open up a new world for our beloved Apollo. Thank you John! More...

Oh my goodness! In one training session Dudley’s behavior improved dramatically. We asked John to help us with our 6-yr-old beagle’s bad habit of pulling while walking him. Not only was he able to help us with that but since we are now “in control” some other bad habits automatically disappeared. Dudley is much calmer, his separation anxiety has improved, he waits for his food bowl to be put down. All by using positive reinforcement. We couldn’t be happier with the service John provided. Jon helped our 3 month old Corgi pup Archie learn how to walk better on a leash. He went from sitting and only walking a few feet, to walking effortlessly in five minutes! He helped us get his puppy bitting and nipping at our heels under control. He even helped us getting better at going potty outside. Archie loved every minute of training, it was full of treats and fun, and after he was exhausted from all the excitement! We loved Jon and highly recommend him to any dog lover! We would give him 5 STARS if we could! More...

I was a little skeptical at first when Jon told me he could have my dog walking calmly without pulling in minutes, but I was quickly shown that he certainly could! Even just after one session I noticed a huge change in my dog. Jon does a great job of using positive and effective training methods to keep both the dog and handler happy. I will definitely be using him again and I recommend that you do too! More...

Mariah's training went well!! I didnt realize how smart she was! The trainer had her healing on leash and sitting within 5 min. I learned alot about what I was doing wrong! I now have the knowledge I need to have a well trained dog! Best $ I ever spent... Jon from North Florida K9 behavior training is better than a dog whisperer, he's the dog talker!! He understood Mariah from the minute he stepped through my door! I would highly recommend him!! More...

We were have in trouble with our new adopted lab/Shepard mix playing nicely with our Aussies. Jon was a great help and took the time watch the behavior of all the dogs and taught us how to defuse his aggressive playfulness. He also helped with the jumping up and in a matter of 24 hours it has been a night and day difference. More...

We have a 3 year old German Shepherd mix named Cleo. We adopted her in September of 2015. When we brought her home she and our family dog Angel (a 14 year old lab mix) didn't get along too well. Cleo figured out real quick who was the boss and it was not her. However, whenever around another dog she gets very anxious and became known to us (through experience) that she is very dog aggressive (small/big). We spent almost $200++ on a trainer (not Jon) for aggression, which didn't do anything. She had also been to a training class for basic training and jumping up on people when you greeted her. This is where we noticed the aggression got worst working in a group session.
After just one visit from Jon, we saw major improvements on aggression towards other dogs, by introducing her to one of our neighbors 2 labs. He observed Cleo’s behavior, developed a plan, worked with her. It became necessary to have an idea to deal with the aggression because we had family visiting and was bringing their big dog. The only issue now is she still has her aggression to small dogs and is very prey driven, however we can’t keep spending hundreds of dollars on this. She now wears a muzzle most times going out because she is unpredictable on walks.
She is a very sweet caring dog, loves turning over on her back and giving kisses, a very people friendly dog. Jon is very caring and understood exactly what we were dealing with. I would recommended him to anyone with a dog issue.

We have two large dogs that we've had since puppy stage. After just one visit from Jon, we have already seen major improvements on aggression, pulling on the leash, and jumping. He observes your dog(s)' behavior, develops a plan, works with them, and leaves you with things to work on. Very personable, caring, and has a genuine passion for helping animals. I can't wait to have another session and see just how far we can go with training. So impressed already! More...

We are full-time RV'ers and met Jon at our current campground last Sat. ( after Mark and Harley - see below review). We have a 20 pound rescue dog ' Freeway', who has been occasionally aggressive toward other dogs and con stand leasy pulling. Jon was incredible. He spent time getting to know us and our interactions w Freeway, discussed our situation and solutions and showed us how to control her leash behavior. Several small changes, i.e., NOT using retractable leash, and lavish praise for good behavior, have led to amazing results. She is prancing by our side and seems much happier. We feel we were good caregivers - we are now heading towards 'Great ' caregivers. We are working on the aggression issues, it will take time, but thanks to Jon, we are confident this wll improve ! Thank so much Jon!! Freeway is the proud owner of a new leash and vast quantities of small treats.... More...

Since I'm lazy - here is my review that I posted on Gainesville Business Word of Mouth when someone was asking about trainers to come to their home to work with their puppy.

John is awesome! Had him to my house 2X for my adopted dog. He spends a lot of quality time with you. Knows how to read your dog and figure out what is best for you and your dog. Teaches you what you should do - not just work with the dog.
He has a booth both at the Wednesday Farmer's market downtown and at Haile Market on Saturday's. He loves to talk dog!

John was absolutely fanastic with my Rescue boy, Gouda. I’ve been spending a lot of time and money worrying about his separation anxiety (non destructive- all he would do is howl - but being as I live in an apartment, I couldn’t have him crying nonstop). He came in, basically identified one of two scenarios as to why he may have become the way he was (desiring human attention) and he pointed me to different exercises to use to desensitize him to my leaving. After trying a few different things, we found one that worked and he hasn’t howled since he’s been gone. Who would’ve known a TV on made all the difference? On top of that, he was so understanding and kind about my situation and really does care about both the people and animals. He is phenomenal and I highly recommend him for any level of dog behavioral issue! More...

Jon has been an amazing asset in helping me better train my dog, and deepening the relationship I have with him. With a better behaved furry friend, I've been able to have more fun with my best friend, I highly recommend Jon to anyone looking to have a better relationship and experience with their dog.

Our boy, Buster, had some serious car frights. Jon was immediately in tune with his fears and helped us set up some exercises to slowly make the car a safe space. Buster hasn't been car sick since we worked with Jon and has started to get in under his own power. More...

I am the proud parent of a wonderful miniature schnauzer who has been my constant companion since I brought him home three years ago. Zelig has a marvelous temperament, is really intuitive and smart, adds a spark of life to whoever he meets, and is just adorable. However in the past year or so, Zelig has made a game out of putting on his harness so that every time we need to leave the house together, it is a struggle to capture him. He thinks it is playtime with a good game of tag. In addition to this, Zelig also shows some aggression to dogs, though it is inconsistent as to when this will happen, and to which dog he will act up at. I contacted Jon Wedemeyer to help me figure out what is going on, why is Zelig is acting this way, and how can I try to find a solution to these issues. I was very frustrated and I needed help. Jon came over this evening to help me sort out these frustrations. He quickly endeared himself to Zelig and working together he showed me how to approach the problems in a very sweet and mellow way. Jon also explained the thinking behind Zelig's actions so that I could better understand his body language and react in a different way. He left my home and I felt confident that with routine practice of his instructions, the mystery behind Zelig's behavior would be a thing of the past. I highly recommend Jon! More...

Does your dog hate the trainer? It is very obvious: your dog takes one look, one sniff and says... you're stooopid, I don't like you and I won't pay any attention to you. Believe me, I have seen it, whether during group lessons or private sessions. You might as well stop it there because nothing will be accomplished and you will have one humiliated trainer and one or two dogs who act "I told you so!". Well, I am thrilled to report that Jon got my two stubborn Briards eating out of his hand within minutes and they took him seriously and accepted his guidance from the very first meeting! Thank you Dear Jon! We are going to have great fun adjusting my dogs' behavior problems and I am so happy that they show such willingness to work with you! More...

We had the privilege of having John work with our 3 year-old pit mix, George. George is an intelligent and well-mannered dog, but when it comes to walking on the leash out in public, or guests coming over, his excitement takes over and has no control.

John was incredibly punctual (10 minutes early), and had a warm personality. Immediately upon arrival he greeted George and calmed him down very quickly. We talked through our challenging points, and realized just how wrong we were in responding to specific behaviors, some we were even exacerbating. We then walked George with John by his side, showing us the benefits of positive reinforcement.

Off this one session alone we are very pleased with the results we've seen. John armed us with the knowledge and techniques needed to keep consistent in changing behaviors, and we would recommend him to any dog owner, period.

Let me start by saying, l thought there was no hope in getting our cattle dog to walk nicely on the leash! He is leash reactive and spazzes out every time we go for a walk.
We had John come over to help work on these problems, he was very helpful by teaching us a few things we needed to know, and showing us the correct way to train Dingo. By the end of the session, he was already walking better on the leash. It will take practice to make it perfect, but this was the best thing I've spent money on in a long time!

Q&A

Simple... I love fixing dogs... I love making a difference in the human-canine relationship and keeping families together and helping teach caretakers WHY their dogs are behaving the way they are, teaching them to THINK like a dog, giving them a new way of looking at their canine companions, as well as teaching them proper training/handling techniques that will treat their pet dog's issues.

I have always deeply loved dogs, more so than people I think. Ever since I got my first puppy as a young boy, I have always had a very strong connection and bond with dogs and I have just understood them. I get dogs, and I have always been able to read them, and communicate back to them very clearly and effortlessly without saying a word, just body language and a touch. I love working with dogs and helping resolve their behavioral issues. This enhances the quality of life not only for the dog, but for the entire family unit!

I have been trained in, and practice only Positive Reinforcement (+R) and Force-Free (FF) methods in working with all my dogs.

There is never any need to yell, scold, intimidate or otherwise destroy the human-canine bond between you and your pet! Anyone who yells and screams at a dog, or advocates or practices using these methods of communicating and interacting with a dog, really knows nothing about dogs, or is just lazy, and should be avoided at all costs, for the sake of the dog.

Positive-Only methods involve building a lasting, lifetime relationship of trust between the human and dog, it means making it fun for the dog to learn and do what it is asked to do. This is accomplished by teaching the dog to ‘WORK” for a reward, which is either a treat, a favorite toy, or simply playing with you! Dogs see any type of attention, affection, activity or treat as a reward for a job done. It is much easier and repeatable to train a dog using positive-only methods than by the old methods, because the dogs enjoy doing the task and will respond willingly and much more reliably to their training.

Services

To determine the root cause of your dog(s) problematic behavior(s) we will set up an initial consultation, where we examine the details of the problem behavior(s), work with you and your dog(s) to see where we can get with the first visit and determine the need for follow-ups. During the consult I develop a treatment plan for you to follow with your dog(s) at home to help redirect, control or extinguish the unwanted behavior.

If we determine at the initial consult that your pet dog will need more than three sessions, we will take the initial consult charge and roll it into a package of four sessions. This enables us to really focus on working specific areas until we have a positive change in behavior and this also allows you to get a much deeper education and training on your dogs specific behavioral issues.

45 minute phone consult with complete eval and treatment plan.
