I have attended every festival since it's beginning, when even the folks in Winston-Salem didn't know what a jewel they had! !! I met my idols Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee at that first festival and had pictures taken with them, God bless their souls! Told my family and all my friends how 'Marvtastic' it was and they were truly missing something amazing! To watch it grow over the years, and to see others recognizing and enjoying it now is oh so special indeed! More...

Firstly, I attended the festival as an artist. I was not expecting the experience that took place because I was in "artist mode". Self doubt or what have you. Among arriving the people were so GREAT! The energy radiated around the space. It was so amazing to just be. Be black and be happy. The smiling faces as we passed, the culture, it's monumental. Thank you to the NBTF for the experience. I will try to attend every year. More...

Went to my first Festival, probably 10 years ago...was blown away! Have not missed one since. Spectacular plays, workshops, vendors' gallery--and believe it or not, little Winston Salem, NC rolls out the red carpet. Plenty of stars (big screen and little screen), come back every 2 years, as a pilgrimage and to honor their start in stage and theater. Well organized event with free bus transportation to all plays and venues. Come! You will be changed. More...

The NBTF embodies the true meaning of festival. We eat, live & breath theatre while there. Theatre for breakfast, lunch & dinner and then top it off with a theatre cocktail. There's sooo much theatre to see that choosing your shows is extra exciting. In addition to seeng theatre you can learn about theatre and even get a job Because back home folks are working it's great to just hang-out & chat. Attending gives you that boost to go back home and make art happen. The NBTF is the most important event for black theatre in the entire world. More...
