This has been our Date Night place for soo long! We went there this afternoon ONLY to be told that if we wanted to do happy hour we needed to sit outside on 98 degree weather or sit at the bar, mind you we ordered food from the non happy hour menu, my husband just happened to want a margarita from the happy hour menu! The restaurant was almost empty, only two other tables were occupied, yet they wanted us to sit in the bar section… We got up and left when the waitress said this and took our business down the street and We won’t be coming back!! … More...

Michal Forbes use to be one of favorite restaurants. But not after last night’s dinner. We went here to celebrate our friend’s birthday, who loved it too. 1)We asked our waitress for the dip that goes with the complimentary chips. She said the “new” chef said they ran out. They weren’t that busy, how could they run out? And it’s different. We want the old sauce back! 2) As we sat there, the restaurant started to get very warmer and warmer. Our waitress tried to accommodate us, and moved us to another part of the restaurant. It was just as warm. Another waitress overheard us and texted the owner to make it cooler. There was a ceiling fan near us and asked if it could be turned on. It was broken. Yesterday was a very hot day. They should have set the a/c cooler before the dinner crowd came in. It was VERY uncomfortable. Mi was sweating it was so hot! 3)several months ago, we brought our family to eat dinner on a Sunday evening. They had never eaten here and were excited to try because we said how good the food was. The “open” sign was on and you are open on Sundays. However, you were closed and there was no sign saying you were closed or didn’t have it on your voice mail when I called. It's still a great place for a real, as-close-to-home-cooked meal as I've had since Leona Yarborough's (aka the "Blue Hair's") Restaurant left Fairway, KS, but this visit, our server was understandably tired after a long day, and a bit abrupt. The fact one of us is "high maintenance" when it comes to food and ordering didn't help...a lot of questions, too many alterations requested, etc. Probably because it was so late in the evening, the normally delicious Fried Chicken Dinner suffered a little. The chicken was somewhat overcooked, and the quantity and quality of the mashed potatoes and gravy were not quite up to par with my Grandmother's this time. Well we went in as a party of 6 for an after game dinner kids (21&22) and parents. Wait staff was a complete turn off from the beginning . One of the kids (22 years old ) ordered an alcoholic beverage and was asked for ID . "No problem " here you go ... wait staff looked it over tried to bend it , said they couldn't take the ID , kid offers second piece of ID , nope not good enough . Server - "It HAS to be American ID" Kid -I don't have American ID I'm Canadian and I go to University here. Server - Well we only accept "American ID" I'll have to ask my manager if this is ok . Turns to walk away , turns back and says " so you ARE 21? Ok then " The "complimentary snack " they give you reminds me of the crumbs in a smashed bag of potato chips. The dip however is yummy if you can find a piece bigger than a dime for dipping . The Mac & Cheese was terrible, when a hungry 20 something athlete post game won't eat it you know there's an issue. Said it tasted like cheese slices and not real cheese also had a large clump of shells that where stuck together and not cooked through. 2 of us ordered the "Dinner for 2" 55.00 is a great deal appie ,2 salads , 2entrees and a dessert. We pointed to the Steak option on the menu . Wait staff said "KC steak" good choice and moved on to the next order. The bill came with a 14.00 mark up because the KC Steak is NOT the steak we pointed to nor where we told of the mark up when we ordered . Plates where never cleared our entire meal so we had bread plates , appie plates , dinner plates and drink ware everywhere. Water was never refilled our entire stay . Yum! This place is so good. I went during restaurant week originally and have been back since. The skirt steak was so tender with a great Demi glacé sauce. I also loved the chocolate cake. What a terrible first time experience, bad service and even worse food. Sad thing is all i got was the KC strip, which one would assume is pretty hard to get wrong. Probably could've gone to Golden Corral for a better experience. Definitely will be one of the last restaurants I'll ever consider or recommend to anyone. More...

The food was decent. I got the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, I took one bite and All the breading fell off the chicken. Asked for my side to be cottage cheese and instead of a side I got a small ramekin . For the prices that we paid our group was not impressed with the food. omg they were so good nice portions nice atmosphere allie our waitress was great we really liked her and she helped us out a lot she helped me pick out my wine to drink which by the way was so good and sweet can't wait to go back everything was just excellent

Very disappointed with this restaurant. We visited during restaurant week. We made reservations and went on a Saturday around noon. Luckily not many people. Unfortunately the waitress did not know the menu. We asked valid questions and she seemed not to know. She also had a sarcastic/unfriendly demeanor. She brought some potato chips to the table which tasted like they were sitting there for a while. We waited 45 minutes for the food to arrive (the restaurant was not even half full) My friend had the chicken nachos. She said the chicken was dry and chewy. She had terrible indigestion later that day. I had a burger which was good (hard to mess up a burger). We all agree the French fries were the best part of the meal. More...

The Michael Forbes Fried Chicken and mashed potatoes and gravy were delicious...like...as good as my grandmother's! Crispy, fresh chicken, real potatoes with what sure tasted like made-from- scratch gravy, and what I would almost swear were homemade dinner rolls. ..everything I had been craving for months! The complimentary basket of homemade potato chips with a ranch-like dipping sauce to munch on while waiting (not very long) for our dinners were a nice perk. And we had an excellent, cheerful, friendly, and accommodating server.We arrived pretty late on a Saturday evening, and it wasn't very crowded or noisy. Their special for the night was prime rib, which was really tempting, but they were out of baked potatoes, a must-have for me with steak. And they serve two of my usually can't-pass-up desserts (flourless chocolate cake and bread pudding), but I was so full and satisfied, I passed that time. But those alone will bring me back! More...

UPDATED (previous review below): it has been a while since our iffy couple of experiences. It has been amazing since then and we truly are regulars. Our usual server, Alex, is awesome and we are usually there every Tuesday or Wednesday for Taco Tuesday and $3 margaritas (tue) or $7.99 burgers (wed). ------The only thing keeping you from a five star rating is our experience with waitstaff. MFs is one of our constants but we show up at least once a week with the assumption we have a 50/50 chance of getting sat with either a great waiter or a horrible one. As a recent example, this Tuesday we came in and we're seated in a booth. We thought we had scored big when one of the good waiters sat us. However a waiter we've had twice before came to give us water and greet us. The first two times were exactly like our experience this week: we were greeted and given water after waiting a good amount of time, by that time we knew what we wanted to order so we did, we were not given the customary chips although all other tables around us had gotten theirs, after that visit to the table, we only saw our waiter twice -- once when we called him from across the room because the order was missing items and the last time when he brought us our checks. After this past time we will start specifically requesting sections. The food is excellent but the experience is lacking when you're ignored by staff. More...

This is the first time we dined inside. Friends asked us to join them tonight for restaurant week. We realized we didn't have any expectations before dining and we were pleasantly surprised. My husband ordered off the restaurant week menu and I ordered a salmon salad. Needless to say we are still stuffed full as we drive home after dinner. Holly took good care of us. My husband's crispy shrimp was very good, the Steak Gorgonzola Rigatoni was plentiful and very tasty. And the Amount Poe Sour Cream pie didn't last long and was a nice twist on the more usual sweet pie. My salad was tasty, but wished my salmon was warmer and as much flavor as the salad. We think what did us in (stuffed full) was sharing our friends chips & cheese dip, roll, and bottle of wine. Holly told us about 1/2 price Mondays and we just might be back to enjoy wine & pasta. If you've ever eaten at Michael Forbe's, you've likely seen us or we've met! Hello friend!You know those lovely sitcoms in the past where someone walks into a bar and restaurant and everyone turns and sends a "cheers" or "hello"? This is that place. Michael Forbe's is the Cheers of Brookside!Let's call it for what it is - this is a neighborhood Bar & Grill. Not fine dining but considering their menu, you can get a darn impressive meal considering it being a neighborhood joint.Drinks are phenomenal. The staff will absolutely memorize your drink order in a heartbeat and have it waiting for you when you walk through the door. The biggest shout out to Jake, Jay, Mallory, Kristi, Taylor, Holly, Jeremy, Kye, Lucas and all the other amazing rock stars that have taken this non-assuming corner restaurant in the neighborhood to our true "home away from home". Stop in, have a drink, grab some nosh, get some hugs from great friends... totally worth it. Say hi to me while you're there, I'll buy ya a drink. I made reservations for a friday night for my party of 3 expecting it to be busy but really wasn't. We got seated immediately. The atmosphere was dark, quiet and romantic. The restaurant was decorated nicely. We chatted for a bit and a server indicated that someone would be with us. During that time we decided on our drinks, appetizers, and entrees. Our server was a very um...an entertaining woman. She spoke loudly, mumbled and would finish her sentences as she walked away. My boyfriend and I decided to partake in the 4 course meal. Calamari, each had our own house salad, him - roasted red pepper pasta w/ chicken and I - steak demi glace, shared the sour cream apple pie and also got the bread pudding. All the food was good but I wouldn't say memorable except the pie. The cinnamon with apple duel was very sweet and tasty and the crust had a nice texture. Do not ever order the fried chicken. It has no flavor except for salt. You get three pieces--a discernible leg and thigh, along with an unrecognizable breast. The breast looked more like a giant, stuffed jalapeño. I didn't even bother to cut into it because the other pieces were too pink, rubbery to cut through, and just plain awful. I asked the nice waiter was the chicken prepackaged and battered, but no, he proudly stated it is done here.Fortunately, they did take three dollars off of the meal. Came here with my husband one Saturday for breakfast/brunch. Not sure if it was just that day but it was incredibly warm inside of the restaurant. Our waitress was subpar. We both ordered $5 mimosas which took a while to get. I got the eggs benedict and my husband got a turkey sandwich, the food was great but we were barely finished when our waitress brought us the check. I think we were there for all of 25 minutes.
