Sarah's joy for math is infectious. She can draw even the most reclusive student out of their shell and build their confidence in math until they see themselves as mathematicians. Sarah is uniquely gifted as an educator to see conceptual connections across grades. This, combined with her creative methods of representing these concepts using different methods, allows her to truly individualize tutoring sessions to each student. More...

Excellent program for my daughter! She struggles a lot with whole class instruction so this program was a great fit for her. Perfectly broken down so she can follow along independently with little to no help from me. The zoom classes are especially engaging and interactive. This program is super effective for my daughter and she had such a great time using it. More...

This amazing human who is known to most as Ms. Fuentes has taken me under her wing from my first year teaching to now! She has gone beyond the call of duty during this quarantine to create videos and a FB group to help students, teachers, and parents with math from elementary through middle school! She’s created Math Mini-Lessons for anyone that needs help! She has taught me and my son to understand numbers in a new way that allowed me to be a better educator and teacher mom. She’s the best math teacher in NYC! More...

Sarah has really helped me and my daughter understand how to get the conceptual parts of fourth grade math. Being a educator myself and not being great at teaching math but being able to reach out to her and ask questions and have her address it on a platform where everybody can understand has been really helpful.

Sarah at Math Mini-Lessons went above and beyond my expectations when working with my elementary school daughter. She is excelling in math and benefits from deep explorations of advanced concepts. Sarah did an incredible job of pushing her thinking while also making their time together engaging and fun. I couldn’t recommend her more for any age level, and can imagine she is exceptional with kids who have gaps they need help filling. More...

Q&As

Working with kids is very different than working with adults. It requires patience, understanding and grace. I don't believe there is such thing as a bad kid or a kid who can't learn. Even when the child is challenging or the topic is tough, kids really want to do their best, they want to feel successful. It is easier to change a child's mindset than an adult. And when they trust you, they try even harder. I love watching kids get excited during lessons. They can't help but smile when they start to feel progress. I love that!

I have been an educator since 2001. When I started I couldn't believe how many kids believed they would never be good at math. I would meet their parents and they'd say the same things, "I'm not a math person so I can't help him" or "Well I didn't learn it that Common Core way so I can't help her". I'd also see teachers teach tricks instead of the real meaning behind the content and kids were. Students in my class were taught to think, not just little robots who plug and chug numbers. I started Math Mini-Lessons because I believe every child can do math. I wanted to create critical thinkers that explored math and saw it as a challenge, yes, but one they would work through.

I am not a traditional tutor who just reviews the homework and says if they're right or wrong. And I am not a 10 minute Khan Academy video who does math and while the kid is lost on step 1. I am a veteran educator with 20 years of experience and two masters degrees in education and mathematics. I am an expert in the field of teaching mathematics. I have taught a huge range of students from 2nd grade to 8th as well as coached high school Algebra I and Geometry teachers. Because of this, I know what your child should have learned before this year, what they are learning this year and what they need to know for next year. I understand how the mind of child develops and how to breakdown complex content to kids so they understand it. I also connect with kids very well and build a positive relationship so they take risks in their learning.

Absolutely. Most of my clients meet on zoom, math on their time. I use engagement platforms so students can show their thinking and their work. This allows me to ask thinking questions to help them really process what they are doing and provide on the spot feedback.

Classes are done remotely so there is no additional travel or risk of exposure to Covid-19.
