I would highly recommend Makena CrossFit to anyone (visiting or local) who is looking for a supportive community full of people who are all passionate about getting stronger and healthier. Stumbling across Makena Crossfit has been one of the best things to ever happen to me. Everyone here made me feel at home from the very first minute I walked into the building. The community here is filled with nothing but love, support, and encouragement. The coaches are so incredibly patient, knowledgable, and giving with their time and energy. As someone who had never done Crossfit before two months ago, I was a bit intimidated initially. This feeling dissolved almost immediately after realizing I had the kindest people coaching me. Wife and I got a couples pass for a week and joined Paul and his dedicated team for great workouts. This was one of the highlights of our vacation. We cannot say enough great things about Makena CrossFit! We were on vacation in Maui and were so glad we dropped into this box. The coaches are excellent (able to assess form quickly and ensure you’re doing the movements properly, and are very welcoming). The facility is fun, we loved the turquoise-colored equipment/walls. The class was a mix of folks of different abilities which made for a great, fun workout! The fact that there was an açaà bowl truck out front was the cherry on top. Dropped in at Makena Crossfit while on vacation - great facility, programming and coaching! All of the members were very welcoming (feel the Aloha spirit! ) and the coach (Paul) did a great job of explaining and supervising athletes of many different levels and capabilities - there is clearly a big focus on health, mobility and safety. Paul was also nice enough to come in early on a Saturday to work out with both my wife and I. Paul is the owner of this Gym and he did a fantastic job coaching every day I was there. He has a lot of technical knowledge and strives to program the workouts to be very challenging but is also watching form and making certain no body gets injured. Coach Paul and ALL of the members do such a great job to create a community that embraces all athletes and welcomes them all in as if they are family. In addition to this Coach Paul designs WODS that are challenging, but also very methodical. With Coach Paul's knowledge about Olympic Lifting, Crossfit, conditioning, body mechanics, nutrition, and overall health, it is impossible to leave this gym without having learned something new, been challenged through the workouts, and been given some advice to improve on your own performance. In June I visited Maui for a wedding. Once I checked in to the hotel I, immediately, looked for a box to work out at during my stay.
The hotel helped me to identify two boxes. I called them both. Only one answered the phone. It was coach Paul. He invited me to come by. I did. Unfortunately, I came too late to join the Saturday partner WOD. So I did it by myself. That might have been a mistake. Coming from Chicago I was not used to the Maui heat and humidity. Regardless, I finished the WOD with shouts of encouragement from coach Paul.
For time partner WOD:
2500 row
200 kb snatch
150 push ups
I modified the WOD into 10 rounds of:
250 row
20 snatch
15 push ups
Time: 48:50 (I finished near death. I think there's a chalk outline of my face implanted into the floor).
Thank you Coach Paul for the encouragement! I picked the right box!! I highly recommend Crossfit Makena!!!
